Telenovela Producer Estrada Honored by Los Angeles City Council

She’s one of the leading telenovela producers in Latin America… And, now Carla Estrada is being recognized in the City of Angels for her industry impact.

The Mexican telenovela producer was honored on Friday by the city of Los Angeles for her audiovisual work and her support of the Hispanic community in the United States.

Carla Estrada

“The city council’s tribute to Carla Estrada is at the same time for the entire Hispanic community, because for people who speak both English and Spanish in Los Angeles, she has taken our culture to the next level with her telenovelas,” said Jose Huizar, councilman for Los Angeles’ 14th District.

After receiving the honor, Estrada said she was accepting the recognition “in the name of all Latinos who, with effort and dedication, have been able to survive here in the United States.”

“Through my work, what I’ve sent them on television is a little of their native land, a bit of its colors, its flavors, and I join them in the faraway love they have for so many relatives, for so many people they cannot have near them,” she said.

Estrada, who once appeared on People En Español‘s list of The 100 Most Influential Hispanics in the world, has worked as an executive producer on more than 20 telenovelas, as well as other entertainment programs for Televisa in her more than 30-year career.

Notable among her productions are 1987’s Quinceañera starring Adela Noriega and Ernesto Laguardia, 1993’s Los Parientes Pobres with Lucero and Laguardia, 2003’s Amor Real and 2009’s Sortilegio.

Amor Real shocked the world by having higher ratings than all of the other television shows in America; placing Univision ahead of American networks like NBC and ABC.

“When I started working on the production of shows in Mexico 35 years ago, only men were in charge of production and direction,” Estrada recalled.

“But the biggest obstacle I had were the women, because many of them refused to take orders from another woman, and they made me cry and want to throw in the towel…but I didn’t leave, which is why I’m the first woman telenovela producer in Mexico,” said Estrada, who saw the Mexican government place a statue of her in one of Mexico City’s most important parks back in 2005.

ABC Family Orders the Mexican Telenovela Remake of “Chasing Life”

Lifetime’s Devious Maids isn’t the only new U.S. television program based on a Mexican series…

ABC Family has given a  series order to the drama Chasing Life, which  was originally called Terminales, for an early 2014 launch.

Terminales

Chasing Life, which received a 13-episode order, according to Deadline.com, joins new ABC Family drama series The Fosters and Twisted, meaning all three of the network’s pilots from the most recent cycle are going to series.

Chasing Life is an adaptation of the successful Televisa Spanish-language series Terminales. The pilot was produced by Lionsgate in association with Televisa.

Chasing Life stars Italia Ricci as April, an ambitious young newspaper reporter who tries to balance her career aspirations with her family — her widowed mom Sara (Mary Page Keller), rebellious little sister Brenna (Haley Ramm), and her grandmother. Just as things start to look up at work, home and on the romance front with co-worker Dominic (Richard Brancatisano), April gets the devastating news from an estranged uncle that she has cancer.

The Mexican version, which premiered in September 2008, stars Ana Claudia Talancón, Alfonso Herrera, Andrés Almeida, Isela Vega, Opi Domínguez and Danny Perea.

Navarrete Cast as the Lead Opposite William Levy in “La tempestad”

Ximena Navarrete could be receiving hate mail in the near future…

The 24-year-old Mexican actress, model and former Miss Universe has been named as the leading lady in William Levy’s next telenovela, La tempestad.

Ximena Navarrete

“… She is working a lot, studying and I expect that the year she spent at CEA (Televisa’s Centro de Educación Artística) will serve her well,” declared Salvador Mejía of Televisa Espectáculos.

Mejía admitted that it wasn’t easy to select Navarrete as Levy’s co-star.

“Very difficult because, for example, the truth is that Silvia (Navarro) did really well, she’s a great, great actress, but this is about types, chemistry and that’s how this decision came to be,” said  Mejía.

Navarrete studied acting prior to entering the Miss Universe contest in 2010, which helped her win the crown as the most beautiful woman in the world, according to Mejía.

“I believe that had a lot to do with her winning the prize of Miss Universe, since it gave her a presence, a leading lady weight, and that’s what we’re looking for,” said Mejía.

For her starring role in La tempestad, Navarrete will be undergoing a makeover, which will be revealed to the media in the next few days.

Filming on the telenovela will begin on March 4 in Veracruz, Mexico, the setting for La tempestad.

Televisa’s “Rubí” to Get an English-Language Adaptation on Fox

The telenovela-to-American-television trend continues… But this time its Fox getting in on the game.

Following Lifetime’s successful move to bring the telenovela-based Devious Maids to life and ABC Family’s attempt at recreating the magic of Televisa’s Terminales, it looks like Televisa’s Rubí may be getting an English-language adaptation via Fox.

Rubi Telenovela

The network has put in development an hour-long series based on the popular 2004 telenovela. Starring Bárbara Mori as a dual protagonist/antagonist,  Rubí centered on a beautiful but poor woman who’d do anything to make her dream a reality and become rich – even giving up the greatest love of her life.

20th Century Fox Television and Televisa are producing the English adaptation, which is being executive produced by Michael Garcia.

The original telenovela earned monster ratings when it aired in the United States on Univision from September 2004 to March 2005, with its two-hour finale being watched by nearly 8 million viewers. So, Fox has high hopes for the recreation.

ABC Looking to Adapt Mexican Telenovela “Teresa” for American TV

Hollywood’s obsession with Mexican telenovelas continues…

It appears ABC is developing an adaptation of the popular telenovela Teresa, according to the The Hollywood Reporter.

Teresa Telenovela

From Saving Grace writer/executive producer Nancy Miller, the drama centers on an ambitious law student living a double life — one as an ambitious and smart law student who pretends to be like all the other wealthy kids at UCLA and another as an illegal immigrant living on the wrong side of the tracks.

The project, which has received a script commitment, hails from Lionsgate and Televisa.

Teresa first aired in 2010 and starred Angelique Boyer, Aarón Díaz and Sebastián Rulli. The telenovela ended its run in February 2011, with Univision broadcasting it for from April through October of the same year. That series was a remake of a 1959 telenovela with Maricruz Olivier, with a third attempted in 1989 with Salma Hayek in the lead role.

It’s the latest telenovela adaptation attempt at ABC, the same network that originally tried to bring Devious Maids to the small screen before ultimately passing on the project and letting Lifetime give the Roselyn Sanchez-starrer a lifeline.

Miller, meanwhile, most recently executive produced Lifetime’s short-lived Against the Wall. Her credits include The Closer and CSI: Miami.

Teresa comes as the network has found success with the Emily Van Camp-starrer Revenge, a soapy thriller the network moved to the plumb Sundays at 9 p.m. slot for its second season.

Velasco’s “Diablo Guardián” to Be Adapted for Spanish Television

Xavier Velasco’s popular book will soon get the Spanish telenovela treatment…

Xavier Velasco

Televisa and Colombian producer RTI have acquired the rights for a television adaptation of the 47-year-old Mexican author’s award-winning novel Diablo Guardián (Guardian Devil).

Released in 2003, Velasco’s novel—the winner of the Premio Alfaguara, one of Latin America’s most prestigious literary prizes—centers on the adventures of a rebellious 15-year-old girl who flees her native Mexico and later finds herself immersed in a world of vice in New York.

Diablo Guardián

Production on the television version of the novel will begin in a few months. The series brings together two big names in Spanish-language television: Televisa, the world’s largest producer of Spanish-language content, and Bogota-based RTI, producer of the hit narco telenovela La Reina del Sur, which stars Kate del Castillo.

Televisa and RTI recently signed a co-production pact good through 2019.

ABC Family Orders Pilot For Remake of Mexican Series “Terminales”

It appears Devious Maids may not be the only new series based on a successful Mexican program…

Terminales

Created and produced by Miguel Ángel Fox , the series chronicles the life of young and successful publicist April Marquez, who is diagnosed with terminal cancer. It’s described as Sex And The City if Carrie Bradshaw was dying of cancer.

The pilot for the American remake was written by Susanna Fogel and Joni Lefkowitz. Aaron Kaplan, Fogel and Lefkowitz will serve as executive producers.
