Disney Branded Entertainment Renews “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” Series, Featuring Charlie Bushnell, for Second Season

Disney Branded Entertainment’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, featuring the 19-year-old half-Latino actor, has been officially renewed for Season 2 at Disney+.

Charlie BushnellThe second installment will follow Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell), Annabeth Chase (Leah Sava Jeffries) and Grover Underwood (Aryan Simhadri) as they embark on a new adventure based on The Sea of Monsters, the second book of Rick Riordan’s best-selling Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, published by Disney Hyperion.

“I can’t wait to bring the next season of Percy Jackson to Disney+!,” Reordan said. “Raise anchors. Hoist the mainsail. All hands on deck, demigods. We’re heading for the Sea of Monsters!”

The renewal comes a week after the Season 1 finale dropped on Disney+, wrapping up Percy’s quest to find the Master Bolt.

Percy Jackson, produced by Disney TV Studios’ 20th Television, marks the biggest launch for a Disney Branded Entertainment series on Disney+ yet. According to Disney estimates, Season 1 has generated more than 110 million hours streamed to date. The premiere episode amassed 26.2M views in its first three weeks on Disney+ and Hulu, which also carried it.

“Rich in magic, wonder, adventure and heart, Percy Jackson and the Olympians captivated the imaginations of viewers of all ages everywhere,” said Ayo Davis, president, Disney Branded Television. “We’re thrilled to embark on an exciting new quest and a season two with Rick Riordan, our fantastic partners at 20th Television, and the exceptional ensemble of cast and creative talent that bring this story to life.”

Percy Jackson and the Olympians is the only ongoing DBT series on Disney+ that is produced exclusively for the streamer. Three other shows, comedies The Santa Clause and Goosebumps and drama The Crossover, are awaiting a renewal decision.

The success of Percy Jackson and the Olympians also has boosted the “Percy Jackson” books as the eponymous novel returned to the #1 spot on the New York Times Bestseller list for Middle Grade series following the series’ debut.

Created by Rick Riordan and Jonathan E. Steinberg, Season 1 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians is executive produced by Steinberg and Dan Shotz alongside Rick Riordan, Rebecca Riordan, The Gotham Group’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Bert Salke, The Gotham Group’s Jeremy Bell and D.J. Goldberg, James Bobin, Jim Rowe, Monica Owusu-Breen, Anders Engström, Jet Wilkinson and Craig Silverstein.

Disney+ has released a new teaser for its upcoming original series Percy Jackson and the Olympians, featuring the 19-year-old half-Latino actor, based on best-selling book series by Rick Riordan.

Charlie BushnellThe series will debut with a two-episode premiere on December 20, 2023 on Disney+, followed by new episodes weekly.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians tells the fantastical story of a 12-year-old modern demigod, Percy Jackson, who’s just coming to terms with his newfound divine powers when the sky god, Zeus, accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt. With help from his friends Grover and Annabeth, Percy must embark on an adventure of a lifetime to find it and restore order to Olympus.

The series stars Walker Scobell (“Percy Jackson”), Leah Sava Jeffries (“Annabeth Chase”), Aryan Simhadri (“Grover Underwood”) and features notable guest stars Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Hermes”), Megan Mullally (“Alecto” aka “Mrs. Dodds”), Toby Stephens (“Poseidon”), Virginia Kull (“Sally Jackson”), Jason Mantzoukas (“Dionysus” aka “Mr. D”), Jay Duplass (“Hades”), Glynn Turman (“Chiron” aka “Mr. Brunner”), the late Lance Reddick (“Zeus”), Adam Copeland (“Ares”), Bushnell (“Luke Castellan”), Dior Goodjohn (“Clarisse La Rue”), Jessica Parker Kennedy (“Medusa”), Olivea Morton (“Nancy Bobofit”), Suzanne Cryer (“Echidna”), Timm Sharp (“Gabe Ugliano”) and Timothy Omundson (“Hephaestus”).

Riordan worked closely with the creative team and showrunners Jon Steinberg and Dan Shotz on the series, which, per Disney+, stays true to his vision for popular literary characters.

The first two episodes are written by Riordan and Steinberg and directed by James Bobin.

The 18-year-old half-Latino actor, who made his acting debut on Disney+’s Diary of a Future President, has landed a recurring role on Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

Charlie BushnellBushnell, who will portray Like Castellan, is part of a list of new cast additions that includes Dior Goodjohn and Olivea Morton in the series produced by 20th Television.

They join previously announced leads Walker Scobell — who plays the title role of Percy — Aryan Simhadri and Leah Sava Jeffries.

The series is currently in production in Vancouver.

Goodjohn’s La Rue, a child of Ares and god of war, is a strong-willed and competitive fighter who doesn’t let much stand in the way of her winning. Intensely loyal to her close friends, she’s intimidating to newcomers and a bully to Percy.

Bushnell’s Luke Castellan is the counselor of the Hermes cabin and the undisputed coolest kid on the block. Luke looks like he’d be more at home with a surfboard than in Greek armor. That doesn’t stop him from being the best swordsman around!

Also recurring in the series are Virginia Kull, Glynn Turman, Jason Mantzoukas, Timm Sharp and Megan Mullally.

Riordan and Jon Steinberg will serve as writers of the pilot, and James Bobin will direct. Steinberg will oversee the series with his producing partner Dan Shotz.

Michael Peña to Star Opposite Owen Wilson in Paramount’s “Secret Headquarters”

Michael Peña has a secret project…

The 45-year-old Mexican American actor will star opposite Owen Wilson in Paramount’s Secret Headquarters.

Directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, the film will also star Walker Scobell, Momona Tamada, Keith L. Williams, Abby James Witherspoon and Kezii Curtis.

Jerry Bruckheimer will produce.

Joost & Schulman and Josh Koenigsberg are writing the current draft.

The story is based on an original screenplay by Christopher Yost, who was the sole previous writer on the project. Chad Oman is also producing for Bruckheimer Films. Orlee-Rose Strauss is exec producing.

The film is a high-concept family action movie about a kid who discovers the secret headquarters of the world’s most powerful superhero hidden beneath his home and must defend it with his group of friends when villains attack. Details behind who Peña would be playing are unknown.

The film is set to bow on August 12, 2022.

Peña was most recently seen in Warner Bros.’ live-action hybrid Tom & Jerry and can be seen next in the Roland Emmerich film Moonfall for Lionsgate.
