Spain’s “Los misterios de Laura” One Step Closer to an American Makeover

Spain’s popular drama series Los misterios de Laura is getting an American makeover…

NBC has ordered a cast-contingent pilot for the Warner Bros. Television-produced drama The Mysteries of Laura.

Los misterios de Laura

The network had given a production commitment to The Mysteries of Laura, a drama project from writer Jeff Rake, last August.

From Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment, the project follows the life and relationships of a female homicide detective who can handle murderous criminals — but not her evil twins.

Rake will executive produce with Berlanti and Kaplan

The original series, created by Carlos Vila and Javier Holgado, currently in its third season on TVE1 Spain. The series stars María Pujalte, Fernando Guillén Cuervo, Oriol Tarrasón, César Camino, Laura Pamplona and Eva Santolaria.

Longoria Partnering with the CW for a Legal Drama Project

Eva Longoria is set to bring some legal aid to the CW…

The 38-year-old Mexican American actress/producer and former Desperate Housewives star is teaming up with the network to create a legal drama project that will feature the CW’s signature soapy elements.

Written by Nikita co-executive producer Albert Kim, the untitled drama centers on a woman imprisoned for a double murder she didn’t commit who earns her law degree while behind bars, then wins her freedom and joins the high-powered law firm that she believes is at the center of the conspiracy that framed her.

Longoria’s UnbeliEVAble Entertainment will produce the project with Warner Bros. Television.

This marks UnbeliEVAble’s third sale this season. The company also has Trust, an hourlong soap based on the popular Colombian telenovela Pura Sangre, and a comedy inspired by sex therapist Laura Berman, both at NBC.

Longoria is currently serving as an executive producer on Lifetime’s Devious Maids, which was recently renewed for a second season.

Beals to Star in ABC’s “Venice” Pilot…

Jennifer Beals is preparing to star in a Romeo & Juliet-like project…

The 49-year-old part-Puerto Rican actress has been cast as the lead in ABC’s drama pilot Venice.

Jennifer Beals

The drama pilot, written by Byron Balasco, is a sudsy-type project about the haves and the have-nots in California’s most seductive city, Venice. It centers on two rival families and a forbidden and dangerous romance that emerges between them as the families battle for control of the beach city.

Beals will portray Lisa Carver, the elegant bohemian matriarch of the Carver family, one of the two feuding clans.

McG will be directing the pilot from Warner Bros. Television and his Wonderland Sound and Vision studio, which he’ll executive produce as well.

Beals, who rose to acclaim in 1993’s Flashdance and starred in Showtime’s The L Word, most recently appeared on television in The Mob Doctor, Castle and Lie to Me.

Cuarón to Direct First American Television Project for NBC…

Alfonso Cuarón is set to make his first foray into American television…

The 50-year-old Mexican filmmaker has partnered with J.J. Abrams for a high-concept drama, which has landed at NBC with a pilot production commitment.

Alfonso Cuaron

Cuarón, a three-time Oscar nominee, will direct the pilot, which he’ll co-write with Home of the Brave’s Mark Friedman. The project centers on a girl who possesses great powers, which will come to fruition in seven years, and the man who gets released from prison to protect her from those trying to hunt her down.

Warner Bros. Television and Abrams’ studio-based Bad Robot are producing the untitled project, with Abrams, Cuarón, Friedman and Bryan Burk executive producing.

Cuarón received Academy Award nominations for writing Y tu mamá también and Children of Men, both of which he directed as well. He also received a nod for editing Children of Men. He also helmed Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Beatriz Cast in “The Smart One” Comedy Pilot

Stephanie Beatriz could be getting her big break in television—with a little help from Ellen DeGeneres

The Latina actress, who has spent several seasons with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, has been added as a cast regular on ABC‘s comedy pilot The Smart One, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Stephanie Beatriz

From Warner Bros. Television, the comedy pilot—starring Portia de Rossi and Malin Akerman revolves around Jude, a brilliant and successful woman (de Rossi) who begrudgingly goes to work for Candy, her less-brainy but more popular sister — a former beauty queen, weather girl and now big-city mayor (Akerman).

Beatriz, who guest starred on TNT’s The Closer, will play Natalee, Candy’s whip smart yet ditsy hairdresser who helped get the dim bulb elected mayor. She’s described as a cross between Octavia Spencer from The Help and Jennifer Coolidge from Legally Blonde.

Beatriz joins a cast that also includes David Arquette and Jean Smart.

Donald Todd will pen the project and executive produce alongside Lauren Corrao and de Rossi’s wife, DeGeneres.
