Showtime has renewed The L Word: Generation Q, starring the 31-year-old Afro-Dominican American actress, for a 10-episode third season.

In addition to Zayas, the series also stars Jennifer Beals, Leisha Haily, Katherine Moennig, Arienne Mandi, Leo Sheng, Jacqueline Toboni, Sepideh Moafi and Jordan Hull.

There are a lot of loose ends to tie up in Season 3. In Season 2, Bette (Beals) dealt with Tina (guest star Laurel Holloman) and Carrie’s (guest star Rosie O’Donnell) engagement, and daughter Angie’s (Hull) search for her birth father; Shane (Moennig) ramped up her business and her feelings for Tess (Jamie Clayton); and hot new author Alice (Hailey) wrestled with her own complicated feelings for her book editor. Meanwhile, a newly single Dani (Mandi) leaned on Gigi (Moafi) during her father’s trial; Finley (Toboni) and Sophie (Zayas) tried hard to make it work despite Finley’s spiraling addiction; and friends Micah (Sheng) and Maribel (Jillian Mercado) fell hard for each other. Showtime has renewed The L Word: Generation Q, starring the Latina actress, for a second season.

The renewal comes ahead of the season finale of the reboot of the classic drama on January 26. The show, which launched on the ViacomCBS-owned premium network on December 8, has been handed another 10-episode run.

Showtime Networks President of Entertainment Jana Winograde revealed that the launch of The L Word: Generation Q drove the network’s biggest weekend of subscribers sign ups in 2019.

Season one has followed the intermingled lives of Bette Porter (Jennifer Beals), Shane McCutcheon (Katherine Moennig) and Alice Pieszecki (Leisha Hailey), along with new characters Dani Nùñez (Mandi), Micah Lee (Leo Sheng), Finley (Jacqueline Toboni), Sophie Suarez (Rosanny Zayas) and Gigi (Sepideh Moafi), as they experience love, heartbreak, sex, setbacks and success in L.A.

Based on The L Word, which aired on Showtime between 2004 and 2009, the reboot moved from West Hollywood to Silver Lake.

The show follows Bette weaving her way through a contentious mayoral run while co-parenting her and Tina’s teenage daughter; Shane returning to L.A. and embarking on her new career as owner of a lesbian bar while trying to save her marriage; and Alice stepping into the spotlight as host of her own queer-focused talk show.

Meanwhile, PR pro Dani is running communications for Bette’s campaign while balancing her relationship with fiancée Sophie, a producer for Alice’s show. Production assistant Finley and professor Micah are finding their footing in the L.A. dating scene, while Gigi navigates family dynamics with her ex, Nat, played by guest star Stephanie Allynne, who is Alice’s current girlfriend. The 32-year-old Dominican model will make her scripted television debut on the forthcoming The L Word: Generation Q, which is set to premiere December 8 at 10:00 pm ET/PT on Showtime.

Mercado will play the character of Maribel Suarez, an immigration attorney and the little sister of Sophie (Rosanny Zayas). The two are very close, and Maribel is always there to give Sophie advice and support.

Mercado is best known as a model with muscular dystrophy and has been praised for her representation of the differently-abled in fashion. She has appeared on E! News and has modeled in campaigns for OlayBumble 100Calvin Klein fragrances, NordstromTargetand Tommy Hilfiger.

On the editorial side, she was featured on the cover of Teen Vogue‘s first digital cover and was in September issues of GlamourCosmopolitanJejune and many others. 

She’s also an active disabilities advocate who has spoken at various summits.

The eight-episode sequel to the groundbreaking 2000s series will debut at 10:00 pm on Sunday, December 8. 

Production is underway in Los Angeles.

Ortega to Executive Produce Fox’s Dance Drama “The Edge”

The 66-year-old choreographer and director-producer, best known for his work on the High School Musical franchise, has joined forces with Flashdance star Jennifer Beals and James Larosa, creator of VH1’s cheerleading drama series Hit the Floor, for Fox’s dance drama The Edge.

Written and executive produced by Larosa, The Edge is set in the Los Angeles dance world, where it’s survival of the fittest. And no one is more fit than this ensemble of ambitious, sometimes ruthless women and men who have trained their whole lives to be the best and won’t let anything—or anyone—get in their way.

Ortega, Beals and Larosa will executive produce. Sony Pictures Television is the studio.

Ortega is director and choreographer of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, starring Victoria Justice, Fox’s television remake of the cult classic set to premiere on October 20.

Beals Starring in Inspirational Sports Film “Full Out”

The 50-year-old part-Puerto Rican actress has joined the cast of Sean Cisterna‘s Full Out, an inspirational sports film based on the true story of Ariana Berlin, a California gymnast whose Olympic dreams were crushed by a devastating car accident.

Beals will portray UCLA gymnastics coach Valorie Kondos­Field, who helped Berlin return to her school’s gymnastics team and win an NCAA championship.

The Flashdance star made the casting announcement on her website.

The ensemble cast for Full Out includes Degrassi star Ana Golja, who portray Berlin, Trevor Tordjman, Sarah Fisher, Jake Epstein, Trevor Tordjman, Robbie Graham Kuntz and Lamar Johnson.

The Carmel Creek Productions film is shooting in Toronto.

The former Flashdancestar guest-stars as a dance instructor who finds herself the target of Angie’s (portrayed by Kristin Lehman) investigation into a killing that initially seems like a case of self-defense during a home invasion, but quickly morphs into something more sinister.

Angie’s kill-them-with-kindness approach only serves to make Beals’ character — whose GPS system inconveniently places her near the scene of the crime — extra jumpy, which in turn makes Angie all the more suspicious.

Motive airs Wednesdays at 10/9c on ABC.

Beals Joins the Cast of Matthew Modine’s “The Rocking Horsemen”

The 50-year-old part-Puerto Rican actress has signed on to star in Matthew Modine‘s coming-of-age film The Rocking Horsemen.

Beals joins an all-star cast that includes Sean Astin, James Frecheville, Riley Griffiths, Jared Gilman, David Alan Grier, Miles Heizer, Eric Stoltz, Isaac White and Billy Zane.

The Rocking Horsemen follows five teenage boys on their quest to form a rock band during the summer of 1962. The teens have high hopes and are driven by a shared fear of what the future holds. When the chance to perform at their high school graduation arises, the stage is set for the band — dubbed The Rocking Horsemen — to realize their dream.

The story, written by Modine, chronicles what it’s like to be young when everything seems possible and music can transform one’s life.

Production is slated to begin in the summer.

Beals is currently working with Modine on the TV movie Proof.

Beals to Star in TNT’s Supernatural Medical Drama Pilot “Proof”

It’s a case of science vs. religion for Jennifer Beals

The 50-year-old part-Puerto Rican actress has landed the lead role in TNT’s pilot Proof.

The supernatural medical drama, which is being executive produced by The Closer alum Kyra Sedgwick, will be written by Rob Bragin and directed by Alex Graves.

Proof centers on Dr. Kathryn Russo (portrayed by Beals), a skeptical, hard-science, brilliant female surgeon with a caustic edge who has been struggling with the devastating loss of her teenage son and a growing estrangement from her surviving daughter.

She’s persuaded to investigate cases of reincarnation, out-of-body experiences, hauntings — all of it looking for verifiable proof to answer one of life’s greatest questions: Is death truly the end, or is there something else beyond?

Beals, best known for portraying Alexandra “Alex” Owens in the 1983 film Flashdance, previously starred in Fox’s Chicago Code. She also co-created and is executive producing Laughs Unlimited, starring Melonie Diaz, which is currently in development at HBO.

Beals’ previous television credits include appearances on The L Word, Lie to Me, Castle and The Mob Doctor.

Beals’ “Lauren” Returning for Second Season on YouTube

The 49-year-old part-Puerto Rican actress, who is starring in ABC’s sudsy pilot Venice, will be returning this spring for a second season of YouTube’s scripted drama Lauren.

Starring Troian Bellisario in the titular role, the series centers on a female sergeant trying to find justice after being raped by three soldiers. She finds no sympathy in her commanding officer Major Jo Stone, portrayed by Beals.

Lauren, which debuted with three episodes last summer, will be back for a 12-episode and continue to explore the consequences of dealing with sexual assault in the military.

In addition to Beals and Bellisario, the series stars Raymond Cruz, Bradley Whitford and Justine Ezarik.

Lauren’s second season is set to in the spring on YouTube’s WIGS channel.
