Martin Featured in Time Magazine’s “Letters From Dad” Series

Let(ter) Ricky Martin entertain you with his words of wisdom…

With Father’s Day this upcoming Sunday (June 21), Time magazine has revealed its annual Letters From Dad series, with the 43-year-old Puerto Rican singer-songwriter participating in the project.

Ricky Martin

The magazine typically asks several influential dads to write open letters to their children — and this year, Martin was among them.

In his heartfelt letter, former member of the all-boy band Menudo starts off by telling his twins Matteo and Valentino, now six, that being a father was something he always dreamed of. He also credits them with positively changing his life.

“Above all, my beautiful sons, your love gave me the strength to live an honest life,” writes Martin, who came out as a gay man in 2010, after years of scrutiny about his sexuality. “A life of courage and transparency, which fills me with great pride and peace. What an amazing gift you have given me, and I’m forever thankful to you.

Before signing off, Martin adds, “If there is anything I want you to live with, aside from knowing that you are unconditionally loved and adored by me and our family and friends, it is that you can be YOURSELF. Don’t ever let anyone or anything make you feel like you can’t be your true self.”

But Martin isn’t the only Latino dad participating this year.

In an equally sweet letter, Colombian superstar Juanes goes through the emotions he felt when each of his children came into this world and what they have taught him.

“I would feel a mixture of joy and nerves come over me that I could not describe with words alone,” writes Juanes to Luna, Paloma and Dante, his three children with TV personality Karen Martinez. “And then, in the blink of an eye, as when a candle is lit in the darkness, you would appear, illuminating the whole place.”

Later in the piece, he writes, “At first, I imagined that my mission as a father would be to teach you everything I knew about life: the physical, the intellectual, the spiritual. But as the days passed, I realized that I would be learning from you. Yes, you read that right—I would also be your student. The purity of your souls, your innocence, reminded me that I, too, one day came to this world like you, innocent and with a pure soul. I felt myself reconnecting with my father and mother, completing this mysterious and magical circle of existence.

Juanes’ letter is also available in Spanish. As the Colombian rock star’s short bio points out, he is about to head on his Loco de Amor tour, for which he is currently rehearsing.

Martin is getting ready for Univision’s La Banda, a new reality singing competition series airing in September in search of the next big Latin boy band. Martin will serve as a judge, along with Alejandro Sanz and Laura Pausini, and he is also credited as a producer.

Other musical figures invited by Time to pen letters for their kids this year include Pete Wentz and Russell Simmons.

The episode features Alba and her Mexican American father, Mark Alba, looking through photos and documents related to her ancestors.

In the episode, Alba learns that her great-grandfather was instrumental in creating a school in Claremont, California for Mexican migrant children, after not wanting his own children to fall behind in education.

Alba herself discusses family stories, including the prejudice her family faced — siblings from her grandmother’s light-skinned family were allowed to go to “white” schools, while her darker-skinned family members were forced to attend “Mexican” schools.

Uslé Creates the Official Poster for This Year’s French Open

There’s no doubt Juan Uslé will remember this year’s French Open forever…

The 60-year-old Spanish artist created the official poster for this year’s Grand Slam tournament at Roland Garros— the 35th poster of its kind.

Juan Usle

Uslé, the sixth Spanish artist to produce the poster for the tournament, offers a work evocative of “the battle the players engage in” on the court.

The artist explains that his “inspiration for the painting began with the net, the ball and the action”, adding that he “did not want to depict any particular character, not even his countryman, Rafael Nadal.” The poster represents, then, an allegory of Roland Garros in three round shapes: yellow for the ball, ochre for the beaten clay and one representing the net. However, this last one represents not only the net, but also “the drama of the game and the fight, the connections and the dialogues” which take place on a tennis court, explains Uslé.

French Open 2014 Poster

The tradition of selecting artistic posters for Roland Garros goes back to 1980. Daniel Lelong, director of the gallery of the same name, suggested that the French Tennis Federation should entrust the design of the poster to a contemporary artist of international repute. From David Nash to Hervé Di Rosa, the posters have always been a hot talking point.

Uslé has had regular exhibitions over the past decade in California, New York, London, Berlin and his native Spain.

Cruz Named 2013 Best Body by Fitness Magazine

Penélope Cruz is fit to be honored…

The 39-year-old Spanish actress has been selected by Fitness magazine as the 2013 “Best Body

Penelope Cruz

The designation comes after Cruz’s pregnancy and the birth of her daughter Luna in July.

While other celebs like Jennifer Lawrence and Sandra Bullock made the list of hottest celeb bodies, the Oscar-winning actress grabbed the magazine’s no.1 spot.

E! Online reported that the stunning actress credits “following a Mediterranean diet, taking women protein bars, following myfitnesshub.com fitness guides, dancing and chasing after her kids for getting her back into shape after both pregnancies.”

In a recent interview with WSJ Magazine, Cruz says she’s “lucky and grateful” for being a mom, a wish she always had.

“It changes everything in your life,” she said. “It’s also going to change the way you approach your work and the way you understand a character like this because she is obsessed with becoming a mother but her body is not working that way and she has to live with the frustration.”

Cruz described her choice to feed Luna naturally, making her the priority.

“I’m breastfeeding and don’t want to give her formula if I can avoid it,” she said. “When I get them to bed, I’ll think about what I want to eat. I’m only thinking about them now.”

The actress also recently discussed her new slim figure with Red magazine after giving birth to Luna.

“I think I’m very lucky that I can breastfeed my children because sometimes even if a woman wants to, she can’t,” she said. “I breastfeed my son for 13 months and I plan to do at least the same with my daughter. That’s an amazing thing for babies, but it’s also really good for the mother because it regulates your body again after pregnancy.”

The 32-year-old part-Dominican American singer/actress, who recently starred on Lifetime’s Army Wives, will form part of a hip-hop album from the first lady and non-profit organization Partnership for A Healthier America aimed at inspiring healthy living among our youth.

Ashanti

Entitled Songs for a Healthier America, the 19-track rap album due in September is part of Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign, which aims to fight childhood obesity.

Along with Ashanti, the record will include tracks featuring Jordin Sparks, Run DMC, Ariana Grande and Blink-182‘s Travis Barker.

Mrs. Obama herself won’t be heard on any of the tracks but she will be making cameos in the music videos, with a total of ten clips to be created for the album, which will first be released to New York schools before being distributed to other major cities.

The first track, “Everybody“, featuring Sparks, Doug E. Fresh, Ryan Beatty, Artie Green and Dr. Mehmet Oz, was already released back in June as a free download and its music video can similarly be found online.

The positive message as well as the bouncy beat of the track, not to mention the spoken word feature from the First Lady highlighting the second year of her “Let’s Move” initiative, calling on everyone to spread the word is a fitting lead track for the well-intentioned project.

Lending some of his valuable support to the First Lady’s pet project is President Barack Obama himself, who has, in the past, made appearances and even sung publicly to help promote the program.

Vergara Named Spokeswoman for “Follow the Script” Hypothyroidism Campaign

Sofia Vergara is encouraging women to Follow the Script when it comes to their health.

The 40-year-old Colombian actress and Modern Family star has been named the spokeswoman for Follow the Script, a campaign to raise awareness of hypothyroidism.

Sofia Vergara

Vergara, who has spoken out about her own bout with thyroid cancer, was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at 28 and had to have her thyroid removed.

“I was very young, and when they tell you that word (cancer), it’s like, ‘What are you talking about?’ You always think, ‘death.’ You don’t – that’s all you think when they tell you that. So it was – it was pretty scary,” Vergara said on ABC’s Nightline.

She first learned of the problem when she took her son Manolo to his endocrinologist and the doctor noticed an inflammation in her thyroid gland.

The removal of her thyroid left Vergara with hypothyroidism, a condition that requires daily medication.

“In my career, I’m known to ad lib and go off-script-but not when it comes to my health. I make sure to ‘Follow the Script’ so I get exactly what my doctor prescribed,” the actress said.

Roughly one in eight women will suffer from a thyroid condition during the course of their lives, Vergara’s endocrinologist, Dr. Jordan L. Geller, said during the campaign launch at the Trump SoHo in New York.

An estimated 30 million people in the United States suffer from hypothyroidism.
