Kali Uchis’ “Telepatia” Reaches No. 1 on Billboard’s Rhythmic Airplay Chart

The 27-year-old Colombian American singer has scored her first No. 1 on Billboard’s Rhythmic Airplay chart as “Telepatia” moves up from the runner-up spot to lead the list dated August 14.

The single’s rise makes it the most-played song on monitored rhythmic U.S. radio stations, according to MRC Data.

“Telepatia” rises to No. 1 as it essentially held steady in plays in the week ending August 8, as measured by MRC Data. The previous champ, Roddy Ricch’s “Late at Night,” vacated the top spot after it declined 2% in plays.

Uchis also wraps a slow-but-steady journey on the list: “Telepatia” reaches the summit in its 17th week on the chart, second only to the 18-week wait for Yung Bleu’s “You’re Mines Still,” featuring Drake, among 2021 No. 1s.

Uchis, who hails from Alexandria, Va., achieves her first Rhythmic Airplay No. 1 on her second chart appearance. Her only previous appearance on the chart came through a featured role on Tyler, The Creator’s “See You Again” in 2017, which cracked the chart in the anchor position — No. 40 — and lasted two weeks.

In line with its Rhythmic coronation, “Telepatia” has secured new benchmarks for Uchis’ career in multiple areas since its November 2020 release.

After the tune gained traction on TikTok in early 2021, a rush of streams powered it to No. 10 on the Streaming Songs chart in March. That activity sparked the track’s Billboard Hot 100 entrance that month and its official promotion as a single. Radio airplay, then, kicked up and helped “Telepatia” achieve a No. 25 best on the Hot 100 in July.

In addition to conquering rhythmic radio, “Telepatia” ruled the Latin Airplay chart for one week in July and earned a No. 11 high on Pop Airplay. Simultaneous success at the three formats pushes the song into the top 10 on the all-genre Radio Songs chart, where it steps 11-10 through a 3% gain in audience to 40.7 million in listenership in the week ending August 6, according to MRC Data.

While “Telepatia” represents Kali Uchis’ solo breakthrough, the singer-songwriter made her first Billboard chart splashes in featured roles on songs across multiple genres, among them, the Gorillaz’s “She’s My Collar,” a No. 36 hit on Hot Rock Songs, Juanes’ “El Ratico,” a No. 10 success on Latin Pop Airplay and the Adult R&B Airplay chart-topper “Get You” in tandem with Daniel Caesar. The lattermost title led for one week and earned Uchis her first Grammy nomination, for best R&B performance.

A month after “Telepatía” reigned on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart for four weeks (May 22-June 12-dated lists), the 26-year-old half-Colombian American singer’s ubiquitous single rises 5-1 on the Latin Airplay chart dated July 3. It’s her first No. 1 on the chart.

The single is her second chart entry on the Latin Airplay chart and her first as a lead act. She previously charted via her featured role on Juanes‘ No. 23-peaking “El Ratico” in 2017.

The steady march of “Telepatía” on radio airplay sends the TikTok hit to No. 1 on the all-Latin genre radio ranking. The track climbs to the top in its 11th week on the list, and with its fourth consecutive weekly gain in audience impressions. It earned 9.6 million in audience in the week ending May 16 — up 30% from the previous week — according to MRC Data.

The song’s Latin Airplay coronation comes after it earlier reached No. 1 on the Latin Streaming Songs chart and Latin Digital Song Sales. The song ruled the Hot Latin Songs chart (which blends airplay, streams and song sales) for four weeks (May 22-June 12 charts). On the latest Hot Latin Songs chart, the track holds at No. 2.

“Telepatía” also jumps 2-1 on Latin Pop Airplay and sends Rauw Alejandro’s pop-disco “Todo De Ti” to the runner-up slot after its two-week reign.

“Telepatía” is Uchis’ first charting single on Latin Pop Airplay without an accompanying act. “El Ratico” peaked at No. 10 in September 2017 and “La Luz (Fin),” with Jhay Cortez, reached No. 16 in January.

Both “Telepatía” and “La Luz” are part of Uchis’ album Sin Miedo (Del Amor y Otros Demonios), which has spent nine weeks at No. 1 on Latin Pop Albums.

Beyond its Latin Airplay and Latin Pop Airplay No. 1s, “Telepatía” continues to climb on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 chart, as the track rises 30-25. It’s her second entry on the chart, following the No. 93 peak of “Get You,” by Daniel Caesar featuring Uchis.

Elsewhere, “Telepatía” rebounds 2-1 on Latin Digital Song Sales after its 11-week lead with 1,400 downloads sold in the week ending June 24.

Juanes performs Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” on “The Metallica Blacklist” Covers Album

Metallica has announced that the band is celebrating the 30th anniversary of The Black Album with a reissue of the wildly successful 1991 album, as well as a companion set titled The Metallica Blacklist, which will be packed with covers by major recording artists, including the 48-year-old Colombian Latin superstar.

But he isn’t the only Latino artist appearing on the heavy metal group’s covers album.

J Balvin appears on “Wherever I May Roam,” while Mexican Institue of Sound featuring La Perla and Gera MX perform “Sad But True.”

Meanwhile, Ha*Ash and Jose Madero both perform separate versions of Metallica’s “The Unforgiven.”

In all, a whopping 53 musicians from various genres are set to be included on the covers album, taking on their favorite songs from The Black Album.

Others include Miley Cyrus, with her interpretation of “Nothing Else Matters” featuring Elton John, Yo-Yo Ma, WATT and others.

The Metallica Blacklist will be available in all formats, including a limited edition seven-LP vinyl pressing, while the reissue will also be available in all formats as well as a limited edition box set. Both releases will arrive via Blackened Recordings on September 10.

Pre-orders for the covers album will receive “instant gratification” tracks in the form of Cyrus’ “Nothing Else Matters” cover, and Juanes’ “Enter Sandman.”

Fans who pre-order the reissue will receive three different recordings of “Enter Sandman.”

The band also announced that 100% of the proceeds from The Metallica Blacklist will benefit 52 charities. They will be split between the band’s own All Within My Hands Foundation, and the charities selected by the artists who appear on the covers album.

Juanes Returns to Rocker Roots with New Album “Origen”

Beginning with a fast-paced rock ‘n’ roll version of Joe Arroyo’s “Rebelión,” Origen pays homage to the songs that shaped Juanes’ life and career.

 

The set, produced by Juanes with Sebastian Krys and featuring no loops or samples, is a refreshing sonic journey that includes iconic tracks like Carlos Gardel’s “Volver” –reimagined as a bachata/tango—and unexpected gems like “Todo Hombre Es Una Historia,” originally recorded by Medellín rock band Kraken.

There are also English-language covers: Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing In The Dark,” which morphed into a soft rock ballad, and “Could You Be Loved,” now a syncopated vamp set over a medley of guitars.

Juanes has said that after experimenting with urban beats in his past two albums, Origen is his return to his true self.

Telemundo has announced the second wave of performers to take center stage at the 2021 Latin American Music Awards next month, with the 27-year-old Brazilian singer/songwriter making the list.

Anitta joins a roster of new additions to the lineup that includes Carrie Underwood, Juanes, Manuel Turizo, Pitbull, Ricky Martin, Wisin, Yandel, Ziggy Marley, Alaina Castillo, Cami, Carlos Rivera, Juhn, Mariah Angeliq, Natanael Cano, Sofía Reyes and Yendry.

Underwood will join David Bisbal for their first-ever television performance of “Tears of Gold,” Ricky and Carlos Vives, as well as Ziggy and Maluma, will present their upcoming collaborations, Juanes will serenade fans with a new song from his soon-to-be-released album, and Karol G will take the stage with Mariah Angeliq for an exclusive TV premiere, to name a few.

They join the first wave of performers, which included Ana Bárbara, Banda MS de Sergio Lizárraga, Camilo, Carlos Vives, Bisbal, Eslabon Armado, Gerardo Ortiz, Joss Favela, Karol G, Los Dos Carnales, Maluma, Myke Towers, Nicky Jam, Piso 21 and a special tribute to the late Regional Mexican singer-songwriter Joan “El Poeta del Pueblo” Sebastian.

Following safety protocols to protect the health and safety of all involved, the 2021 awards show will honor some of the most influential Latin artists of today, as voted by fans in 25 categories including pop, urban, tropical, regional Mexican, and the newly added favorite virtual concert.

The 2021 Latin AMAs, hosted by actress Jacqueline Bracamontes, will air at 7:00 pm ET on Thursday, April 15, from the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida, via Telemundo and will broadcast simultaneously on Universo and throughout the Americas on Telemundo Internacional.

Marc Anthony’s “Un Amor Eterno” Rises to No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay Chart

The 52-year-old Puerto Rican singer’s “Un Amor Eterno” shoots to the top of Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart with a 9-1 burst on the list dated March 20.

The new achievement breaks him out of a tie with Prince Royce (Juanes and Yandel) to become the tropical act with the third most No. 1s, standing behind Romeo Santos (17) and Carlos Vives (15).

“Un Amor Eterno” rallied to the top with a 58% increase in audience impressions, to 10 million, earned in the week ending March 14.

The song scored its biggest gains in the tracking week on New York’s WSKQ (up 854,000 in audience) and WPAT (up 626,000), as well as San Juan, Puerto Rico’s WZNT (up 610,000) and Los Angeles’ KLVE, the latter of which put the song in prominent rotation for the first time (up 387,000).

 

Juanes to Perform on PBS’ New Year’s Eve special “United in Song: Celebrating the Resilience of America”

The 48-year-old Colombian singer/songwriter and musician will take part in PBS’ New Year’s Eve broadcast event United in Song: Celebrating the Resilience of America.

Juanes, who has won a combines 26 Grammys and Latin Grammys during his career, will take part in several performance and interview segments filmed at George Washington’s Mount Vernon, including a special Spanish-language rendition of Bruce Springsteen’s Dancing In The Dark.

Other artists participating in the special include Josh Groban, Patti LaBelle, Yo-Yo Ma and Audra McDonald.

Juanes to Finance Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation’s Next Prodigy Scholarship to Berklee School of Music

The Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation has revealed that the 48-year-old Colombian musician and singer-songwriter is set to finance the next four-year Prodigy Scholarship that will fully fund a student’s bachelor’s degree in music at Berklee School of Music starting in the Fall 2021.

“When the Latin Recording Academy reached out with this opportunity, I felt great joy,” said Juanes. “It took me back to when I was just getting out of high school and I was obsessed with music but I didn’t have the money to study music. Actually, studying music wasn’t even a thing and back then, I didn’t really think studying music would do anything for my future. But now I understand the importance of a music education and that’s why it’s so beautiful to be able to give back.”

The scholarship, created six years ago, holds a maximum value of $200,000 and the application period will be open from December 14 through April 10, 2021. It’s traditionally awarded to an outstanding music student between the ages of 17-24, who demonstrate a passion for Latin music but face severe financial hardships while pursuing a college education.

“This next musical prodigy should be exceptional and I don’t mean that they have to extremely virtuoso but they should have special something,” Juanes adds. “But most importantly they have to love music and be passionate about the craft. Whether you’re studying, practicing, wiring songs, you have to be dedicated 100 percent.”

In addition to the Juanes scholarship there will be 43 other scholarships; three Gifted Tuition scholarships and and 40 Tuition Assistance scholarships for music students admitted to universities of their choice.

In previous years, the Prodigy Scholarship has been co-sponsored by Latin stars including Enrique Iglesias, Juan Luis Guerra, Miguel Bosé, Carlos Vives, Emilio and Gloria Estefan, and Julio Iglesias.

Juanes to Host Star-Studded Christmas Musical Special “Celebremos: Eterna Navidad”

The 45-year-old Colombian superstar and his wife Karen Martínez are set to host a star-studded Christmas special that will stream only on Pantaya, according to Billboard.

Titled Celebremos: Eterna Navidad, the musical event — produced by streaming service Lionsgate‘s Pantaya, Universal Music GroupElefantec Global and Plataforma — will feature performances by Alejandro FernándezDanna PaolaGloria Trevi and Los Tigres del Norte, among many others.

“We all need a little extra Christmas cheer this year and what better way to bring people together than by a holiday special featuring joyful music and celebrity fun,” said Mario Almeida, Pantaya vice president of programming, development, and acquisitions. “We are excited to be working with the biggest names in Latinx entertainment and to partner with Pepe Baston’s Elefantec Global, Plataforma and Universal Music Group.”

The holiday special will also include other guests, including actors Aislinn Derbez, Ana De La Reguera, Sebastian Zurita and Ricardo O’Farrill, and renowned chefs Benito Molina and Solange Muris.

Juanes Appears in Guitar Center’s First-Ever Spanish Language Commercial

Guitar Center has launched an artist-centered campaign for the holidays that includes its first-ever Spanish-language ad, featuring the 48-year-old Colombian musician and singer-songwriter.

The “Make Music” campaign, which launched in early November and runs through December 24, is meant to “inspire everyone globally” for more people to make music.

“We’re turning to many of these artists to share their unique perspective on what music means to them in hopes that their experiences will inspire others on their musical journey,” Jeannine D’Addario, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer at the Guitar Center Company, tells Billboard.

Juanes, who became a household name in the early 2000s with hits like “A Dios Le Pido,” “Es Por Ti,” and “La Camisa Negra,” is at the helm of Guitar Center’s first Spanish-language ad spot for digital broadcast expected to run in the upcoming weeks. This also marks the first time a Latin artist is featured on a Guitar Center campaign since Chicano Batman in 2018.

“The overall goal of the campaign is to inspire people to play, to enjoy the process of making music and find personal gratification in that effort,” says D’Addario, adding that Juanes was the perfect Latin artist to join the campaign. “We wanted to highlight a combination of legendary artists, innovative producers, and rising musicians to share their personal stories as to why they make music.”

In the 30-second ad, first released in English and exclusively on Billboard, the award-winning artist talks about his musical journey and how it traces back to his father listening to Argentine and Colombian folk music. “Music for me is like a cure for my soul,” he says. “I make music to connect with people.” He’s also seen performing an acoustic version of his single “Más Futuro Que Pasado.”

Spreading holiday cheer and celebrating every genre, the campaign hopes to inspire people to turn to music and instruments during these trying times. “We’ve seen an uptick in guitar sales as they have more than doubled during the pandemic,” says D’Addario, despite The New York Times reporting in October that the music retailer chain could potentially file for bankruptcy. “We expect guitar sales to continue trending positively in 2021. We are also seeing growth in home recording, keyboards, and electric drums.”

The “Make Music” campaign features a series of 25 artist videos released on GuitarCenter.com and its YouTube channel. Music aficionados are encouraged to join the conversation using the hashtag #WhyWeMakeMusic.
