Asdrubal Cabrera Agrees to $1.75 million, One-Year Deal with Arizona Diamondbacks

Asdrubal Cabrera is Arizona bound…

The 35-year-old Venezuelan professional baseball infielder has agreed to a $1.75 million, one-year deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to multiple media reports.

Cabrera can earn up to $1.05 million in performance bonuses, as part of the deal, which was first reported by MLB Network.

Cabrera is a two-time MLB All-Star who was with the Washington Nationals in 2020, batting .242 with eight homers and 31 RBIs in the pandemic-shortened season.

Cabrera seems like an ideal fit for the Diamondbacks at second base, which would move the versatile Ketel Marte back to centerfield.

Marte had a breakout year in 2019 while playing mostly center field but was moved back to primarily second base in 2020.

Cabrera was an All-Star with the Cleveland Indians in 2011 and 2012. He has played all four infield positions during his career and has nearly 1,700 career hits, along with 188 homers.

The Diamondbacks have made a couple of moves over the past few weeks after a quiet offseason. They signed veteran relief pitcher Joakim Soria to a $3.5 million, one-year deal.

Arizona is coming off a disappointing 25-35 record in 2020, which put them last in the NL West.

Asdrubal Cabrera Returning to the Washington Nationals

Asdrubal Cabrera is preparing for more National(s)exposure…

The 33-year-old Venezuelan professional baseball switch-hitting infielder has a greed to a one-year contract for a second stint with the Washington Nationals, and manager Dave Martinez told him to be ready for multiple roles.

Cabrera was released Saturday by theTexas Rangers as they turned to youth. He batted .235 with 12 home runs, 15 doubles and 51 RBIs in 93 games, drawing 38 walks.

“I was caught by surprise. I didn’t expect it,” Cabrera said.

Cabrera, who played all of his games at third base this season, joined his new team before the middle game of a series with the San Francisco Giants. He appeared in 49 games for Washington in 2014 after being acquired from the Cleveland Indiansat the trade deadline.

“I’m very thankful to the Nationals. They gave me an opportunity to return to the team,” Cabrera said. “It’s a new challenge for me, I know this organization. … I’m going to come off the bench. I’ll hit for the pitcher, I’ll play different positions. I’ll be playing around the whole infield.”

That means taking ground balls at first, where he might just get some use.

Martinez appreciates having Cabrera’s power bat available off the bench.

“He hits the ball all over. It was a great addition for us,” Martinez said. “I told him, ‘Just be ready, you could play everywhere, come in, double-switch and help us in many ways.'”

The Nationals optioned infielder Adrian Sanchez to Double-A Harrisburgand designated right-hander Kyle Barraclough for assignment.

Tejada Signs One-Year Contract with the St. Louis Cardinals

Ruben Tejada will be flying high in St. Louis…

The 26-year-old Panamanian professional baseball player has signed a one-year contract with the St. Louis Cardinals. The deal is worth $1.5 million, according to multiple reports.

Ruben Tejada

The announcement comes just days after Tejada was released by the New York Mets.

St. Louis needed another infielder after losing shortstop Jhonny Peralta for the first few months of the season with a torn ligament in his left thumb, which required surgery to repair.

“We do feel like there is an opportunity to add depth, because Tejada was recently released, and for us it made sense to pursue this,” Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said, according to MLB.com. “I just think it makes our club stronger overall, and ultimately it then gives (manager) Mike (Matheny) the flexibility to utilize the different infield positions until Peralta gets back.”

Tejada had returned healthy this spring training after suffering a fractured fibula in his right leg on a slide from Chase Utley of the Los Angeles Dodgers during Game 2 of the National League Division Series.

Tejada hit .261 with three homers and 28 RBIs in 360 at-bats last season.

Had he not been released by the Mets, Tejada was due to earn $3 million this season. By releasing him more than 15 days before Opening Day, the Mets were obligated to pay him slightly less than $500,000.

Tejada became expendable with the Mets because they added middle infielders Neil Walker and Asdrubal Cabrera during the offseason and also have Wilmer Flores to handle shortstop.
