Jennifer Lopez to Present at This Year’s Golden Globes

The 50-year-old Puerto Rican superstar, a nominee in the Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture category, has been added to the star-studded presenter lineup.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced that J.Lo, Elton John, Zoe Kravitz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Will Ferrell, Gwyneth Paltrow, Brad Pitt, Paul Rudd, Jennifer Aniston, Cate Blanchett, Reese Witherspoon, Jason Momoaand more will also present at this weekend’s ceremony.

They join previously announced presenters Nick Jonas, Ansel Elgort, Dakota Fanning, Charlize Theron, Octavia Spencer, Sofia Vergara, Kerry Washington, Ted Danson,Kate McKinnon, Tiffany Haddish, Daniel Craig, Glenn Close, Chris Evans, Margot Robbie, Scarlett Johansson, Salma Hayek, Amy Poehler, Rami Malek, Tim Allenand Pierce Brosnan.

The 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards, hosted by Ricky Gervais, will air live from the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on Sunday, January 5 at 5:00 pm PT/8:00 pm ET on NBC.

Gina Rodriguez to Host the Costume Designers Guild’s 20th Annual CDGAs

Gina Rodriguez has plenty of reason to dress to the nines…

The 33-year-od Puerto Rican actress and Jane the Virgin star will host the Costume Designers Guild’s 20th annual CDGAs next month.

Rodriguez will emcee the trophy show on February 20 at the Beverly Hilton. The nominees were announced last week.

“I am thrilled the Costume Designers Guild asked me to host the platinum anniversary of the CDGA ceremony,” Rodriguez said. “Working with my Jane the Virgin costume designer, the marvelous Rachel Sage Kunin, has been one of the most fulfilling collaborative relationships of my career. I cannot wait to celebrate with Rachel, and her peers, on this milestone evening.”

The Shape of Water filmmaker Guillermo del Toro will receive the CDG’s Distinguished Collaborator Award, which honors individuals who demonstrate unwavering support of costume design and creative partnerships with costume designers.

The guild said it will present its Career Achievement Award to Joanna Johnston, a two-time Oscar nominee for Allied and Lincoln.

Jeweler and metalworker Maggie Schpak will receive the guild’s Distinguished Service Award, which goes to a person whose specialties and talents contribute to the craft and art of costume design.

“Joanna Johnston, Guillermo del Toro and Maggie Schpak have each made their unique mark in our industry and on the world of storytelling,” CDG President Salvador Perez said. “As we commemorate 20 years of applauding the best in costume design, we couldn’t be more excited about honoring their work and thanking them for their contributions.”

“Coco” Co-Director Adrian Molina Named as a Finalist for This Year’s Humanitas Prize

Adrian Molina is in the running for a special prize…

The 32-year-old Mexican American screenwriter and storyboard artist has been named a finalist for this year’s Humanitas Prize.

Nine films from a combined 21 screenwriters will compete in three categories, a first this year. The award was created to honor film and TV writers whose work inspires compassion, hope and understanding in the human family.

The finalists are vying in the categories of drama, comedy, and family films, with three nominated films competing for each prize.

Molina, who served a co-director, screenplay writer, and lyricist on the Disney/Pixar hit animated film Coco, is nominated alongside his Coco colleagiues Lee Unkrich, Jason Katz and Matthew Aldrich.

Molina and company are nominated in the Feature – Family category, facing off against the people behind Ferdinand and The Breadwinner.

The Humanitas Prize winners will be announced February 16 during a gala at the Beverly Hilton.

Guillermo del Toro Named Best Director at This Year’s Golden Globes

It’s a long overdue first for Guillermo del Toro…

The 53-year-old Mexican filmmaker picked up his first Golden Globe trophy at Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards.

del Toro, who’d never been nominated before this year, took home the trophy for Best Director, for his inspired work on The Shape of Water.

Known for his work on monster movies like Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth and Blade, del Toro is considered a master of the genre.

In The Shape of Water, he continues in that same world, telling the story of a lonely janitor who forms a unique relationship with an amphibious creature that is being held captive. It was originally conceived with 1960s monster movies in mind, but transformed into something quite different as the deep relationship between its characters evolved.

“Since childhood, I’ve been faithful to monsters,” said del Toro in his acceptance speech, calling them “patron saints of imperfection.” del Toro noted that he has spent 25 years handcrafting “very strange little tales” that ultimately “have saved my life.”  He closed by noting, “My monsters thank you.”

Meanwhile, Disney/Pixar’s hit Coco was named Best Animated Feature. The film’s director Lee Unkrich gave a shout-out “to the incredible people of Mexico” without whom he said the film would not exist.

The win follows best animated film honors from the National Board of Review and the New York Film Critics Circle.

Coco takes place during the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos. Directed by Unkrich and Adrian Molina, Coco follows a young boy, Miguel, who wishes to be a star-studded crooner of standards, just like his grandfather, the legendary singer Ernesto de la Cruz. However, music is of the devil in Miguel’s family, and de la Cruz is largely to blame for the curse. In order to make generational events correct, Miguel finds himself on the other side of life with relatives he’s only heard stories about.

Guillermo del Toro Earns PGA Awards Nomination for “The Shape of Water”

The recognition for Guillermo del Toro’s latest monster-piece continues…

The Producers Guild of America has announced its film and television nominees for the 29th annual PGA Awards, with the 53-year Mexican filmmaker earning a nod for his critically acclaimed film The Shape of Water.

For the first time, a tie in the voting means 11 films are vying for the marquee Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, rather than the usual 10.

In addition to del Toro’s The Shape of Water, the nominees include The Big Sick, Call Me by Your Name, Dunkirk, Get Out, I, Tonya, Lady Bird, Molly’s Game, The Post, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Wonder Woman.

The PGA Awards will be handed out on January 20 at the Beverly Hilton.

Simone Garcia Johnson Named Next Year’s Golden Globes Ambassador

Simone Garcia Johnson is getting a Golden opportunity…

The 16-year-old half-Latina model has been named Golden Globes Ambassador, formerly called Miss Golden Globes, for next year’s awards show, according to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Garcia Johnson is the daughter of Hollywood star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and entertainment and media mogul Dany Garcia.

“As we look forward to the 75th anniversary of the Golden Globe Awards, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association members decided to expand this role to embody the HFPA’s philanthropic efforts year round,” said HFPA President Meher Tatna. “The honoree will now be referred to as the Golden Globe Ambassador, and we could not think of a better representative than Simone to carry on this tradition, as her values closely reflect everything the HFPA stands for.

Garcia Johnson also announced her partnership with GlobalGirl Media as part of her new title.

“I’ve been lucky enough to grow up in a household with strong role models and feel so honored to represent the HFPA for its 75th Anniversary,” she said.  “As the newly minted Golden Globe Ambassador, I hope to serve as a role model to young people everywhere and empower them to speak out on issues they are passionate about.”

NBC will air the 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards live at 8:00 pm ET Sunday, January 7, from the Beverly Hilton. The show will be delayed in the West.

Boyce Avenue Receives “Streamy Awards” Nomination for Its Cover of The Chainsmokers’ “Closer”

The Latino brothers, who make up Boyce Avenue, have earned their first Streamy Awards nomination, alongside actress/singer Sarah Hyland, in the Cover Song category for their cover of The Chainsmokers & Halsey’s “Closer.”

The event honors the best in online video and the creators behind it. The annual event brings together the biggest names in YouTube and online video for a night of celebration, discovery, and meaningful recognition.

But the Boyce Avenue brothers aren’t the only Latino nominees…

The International category features three Latino nominees: 24-year-old Salvadoran gaming YouTuber Fernanfloo, 21-year-old Mexican internet personality, vlogger, and model Juanpa Zurita, and 21-year-old Colombian YouTuber Sebastián Villalobos.

Manny Mua is nominated in the Beauty category. The 26-year-old Latino YouTuber and make up artist, whose real name is Manny Gutierrez, regularly posts make-up tutorials, make-up first impressions, and beauty tips on his YouTube page.

Two Latina choreographers are nominated in the Dance category: 21-year-old Mexican American choreographer Chachi Gonzales, and Latina choreographer Tricia Miranda.

The Streamy Awards, produced by dick clark productions, will take place at 9:30 pm ET/6:30 pm PT on September 26 at the Beverly Hilton.

Lovato to Receive Vanguard Award at This Year’s GLAAD Media Awards

There’s no denying Demi Lovato is a vanguard… And, now she’ll have the award to prove it.

The 23-year-old part-Mexican American actress will be honored with the Vanguard Award at this year’s GLAAD Media Awards.

Lovato is being feted for her commitment to supporting LGBT youth.

In 2013, the “Cool for the Summer” singer was the GLAAD ambassador for Spirit Day, part of their anti-bullying campaign. Additionally, Lovato’s was applauded for filming the official music video for her single “Really Don’t Care” at the annual L.A. Pride parade in West Hollywood.

Previous honorees have included Jennifer Lopez, Janet Jackson, Kerry Washington and others.

A few of this year’s nominees include Adam Lambert and Le1f for outstanding music artist; Caitlyn Jenner’s I Am Cait for outstanding reality series; and the documentary Mala Mala for outstanding documentary.

The 27th annual GLAAD Media Awards will be held at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on April 2.

Delgado Wins First-Ever Costume Designers Guild Award

Paco Delgado is this year’s period king…

The Spanish costume designer picked up his first Costume Designers Guild Award for Excellence in Period Film, which was handed out at the Beverly Hilton.

Delgado, who previously earned a CDG nomination in the same category for his work on Les Misérables, won the award for his work on The Danish Girl, starring Eddie Redmayne as Lili Elbe, the first person to undergo gender confirmation surgery, in 1930s Germany.

“When I start doing the research into a new subject or a new model, I always try to see as much material as possible. In this case, because they were artists, we wanted to recreate this sort of artistic mold into the clothes,” says Delgado of his work. “Yes, we definitely did base a lot of ideas—we didn’t copy things completely except the dress that Gerda is painting of a portrait of Ulla as a ballerina. It was the only dress we copied completely. The rest, we tried much more to get the feeling of the painting. What sort of feelings they had in sense of color, in terms of sensuality, in terms of what materials Gerda was depicting. And trying to get that translated into what they were wearing at the time. But I mean, much of the research was made around the designers of the period.”

Delgado is nominated for an Academy Award for Best Costume Design for the same film.
