Film Constellation has finalized several deals on the 42-year-old Spanish director’s upcoming thriller Fatum.
The film has been acquired for France (Canal+), Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy (Plaion) and Latin America (California Filmes).
The Spanish-language feature brings together a compulsive gambler and an elite sniper, whose destinies become intertwined on a fateful day when the local betting shop gets robbed.
When a single gunshot is fired, the next 24 hours will set them on a race against time that will define their lives forever.
The cast features Luis Tosar, Álex García, Elena Anaya and Arón Piper.
The production will be released in Spain in 2023 by Universal Studios.
The 37-year-old half-Brazilian American director is set to helm the remake of The Staircase, one of the first true-crime documentaries to break out into mainstream culture when it was released in 2004.
Campos’ remake will be a drama limited series for HBO Max with Colin Firth playing Michael Peterson, the man convicted of murdering his wife, Kathleen Peterson.
There previously were rumors that Harrison Ford had been attached to the project.
The Staircase is written and executive-produced by Campos and Cohn, and Campos will direct six of the eight episodes of the show, which is produced by Annapurna Television and HBO Max.
The Staircase started out as a documentary from director Jean-Xavier de Lestrade. It told the story of Michael Peterson, a crime novelist accused of killing his wife Kathleen after she is found dead at the bottom of a staircase in their home, and the 16-year judicial battle that followed. De Lestrade was granted unusual access to the case immediately following Kathleen’s death in 2001 in Durham, NC. Her husband, Michael, a local public figure and successful novelist, quickly became the prime suspect and was convicted.
The original series aired on France’s Canal+ and BBC 4 in the UK as well as on Sundance Channel in the United States.
Lestrade returned to the case a few years later for a three-part follow-up to the case, which aired on Netflix.
“This has been a project I have been working on in one way or another since 2008,” says Campos. “It’s been a long and winding road, but well worth the wait to be able to find partners like HBO Max, Annapurna, co-showrunner Maggie Cohn and the incredible Colin Firth to dramatize such a complex true-life story.”
Campos previously directed the Rebecca Hall-fronted feature Christine.
Apple TV+ announced the cast, which includes the 41-year-old Puerto Rican and Cuban American actress and activist, and set the premiere date for its genre-bending auditory adaptation of Canal Plus’ Calls.
In addition to Dawson, the stars featured in the first season of the nine-part drama, include Nick Jonas, Pedro Pascal, Lily Collins, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Aubrey Plaza are among the stars featuring in the first season of the nine-part drama.
Launching on Friday, March 19, the show uses audio and minimal abstract visuals to tell nine short-form stories. Each episode follows a dark mystery that unfolds through a series of seemingly average, unconnected phone calls that quickly become surreal as the characters face growingly unsettling experiences.
Based on a French series created by Timothée Hochet, it is directed by Fede Álvarez, who directed 2013’s Evil Dead feature and 2016’s horror film Don’t Breathe.
Nicholas Braun, Clancy Brown, Mark Duplass, Karen Gillan, Judy Greer, Paul Walter Hauser, Danny Huston, Riley Keough, Joey King, Stephen Lang, Jaeden Martell, Paola Nuñez, Edi Patterson, Danny Pudi, Ben Schwartz and Jennifer Tilly also appear in the first season.
Calls was the streamer’s first international series order back in June 2018 and it also marks its first global co-production – a tie up with French pay-TV broadcaster Canal+. Apple will launch the series, which is produced with Studiocanal and Bad Hombre, in 100 countries, while Canal+ will premiere a French-language version in a number of markets.
Apple will launch the series in a number of Spanish-speaking Latin America markets as Llamadaswith Spanish-language custom graphics.
France’s Canal+ has acquired HBO Europe’s first Spanish original drama, Patria, starring the 29-year-old Spanish actress.
With a narrative that spans more than three decades, Patria tells a story of the Spanish Basque country threatened by the terrorism of the leftist separatist group ETA, as seen through the eyes of two families divided by the violent conflict.
On the day ETA announces a ceasefire, Bittori (Elena Irureta) visits the cemetery where her husband Txato, who was murdered by the terrorists, is buried. She tells him she’s decided to return home to the village where they lived together to try and get closure.
Bittori’s presence in the village causes chaos — enraging Miren (Ane Gabarain), her neighbor, once a close friend, and the mother of Joxe Mari, an imprisoned terrorist and the probable killer of Txato. The rift between the two women and their deeply held convictions make trying to forget impossible. The question is, will they be able to forgive in a community shattered by political fanaticism?
In addition to Abaitua, who portrays Nerea, Irureta and Gabarain, the series also stars Iñigo Arambarri, Mikel Laskurain, Loreto Mauleón and Jon Olivares.
Patria was created and written by Aitor Gabilondo, based on the bestselling novel by Fernando Aramburu.
The series will premiere in HBO Europe’s 21 territories on September 27, while it will be released on the same day in the U.S. on HBO and HBO Max.
