Christina Aguilera to Perform Whitney Houston Tribute at the American Music Awards

Christina Aguilera will be the queen of the night for a special tribute at this year’s American Music Awards

The 36-year-old half-Ecuadorian American Grammy-winning singer will perform a 25th anniversary tribute to Whitney Houston and her iconic work as an actress and singer in the romantic thriller The Bodyguard (released November 25, 1992) at the 2017 AMAs on November 19.

Christina Aguilera

Aguilera’s tribute will include songs from the movie’s Diamond-certified (and primarily Houston-performed) soundtrack.

“Whitney herself stated in 2001 that Christina Aguilera sang the best version of her song ‘Run to You,’” Houston’s estate offered in a press release. “It is with great appreciation and honor that she is returning to participate on the American Music Awards for a special tribute honoring the 25th anniversary of The Bodyguard. Whitney said that Christina is without a doubt one of the best voices she enjoyed in this generation of music.”

Aguilera expressed her deep gratitude for Houston and the opportunity to honor her, also via statement: “I am honored and humbled to be asked to participate in such a special tribute of a timeless soundtrack that has been a huge inspiration not only in my own personal life and career, but to countless aspiring singers — touching music lovers worldwide and influencing the history of music itself.

“To be honoring the one and only, Whitney Houston, is a blessing and I am grateful to celebrate the spirit of her songs and legend that lives on,” she continued. I feel eternally fortunate to have personally met her on and off the stage. My deep appreciation for her kindness to me while coming up in the business — her graciousness, generosity, humanity and beauty — lived up to everything I could have hoped for in meeting my idol and will forever be cherished in my memory of her.”

Houston won 22 AMAs throughout her illustrious music career. She died unexpectedly in February 2012.

The AMAs will air live beginning at 8:00 pm ET on ABC.

Cardi B Makes History as “Bodak Yellow” Reaches No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100

It’s an extra special (and historic) feat for Cardi B

The 24-year-old part-Dominican American rapper, whose real name is Belcalis Almanzar, becomes the first female rapper in nearly 19 years to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart without the assistance of any other credited artists, as her debut hit “Bodak Yellow (Money Moves)” rises from No. 2 to No. 1 on the latest chart (dated Oct. 7). And she’s the first Dominican artist to reach the top of Billboard’s main singles chart.

Cardi B

“Bodak Yellow” makes Cardi B just the second female rapper to top the Hot 100 without any other billed artists, following Lauryn Hill‘s first solo Hot 100 entry (apart from the Fugees), “Doo Wop (That Thing),” for two weeks beginning with its November 14, 1998, debut at No. 1.

Cardi B is only the fifth female rapper ever to lead the Hot 100 at all. After Hill, Lil’ Kim ruled for five weeks in 2001 with Christina Aguilera, Mya and P!nk on “Lady Marmalade“; Shawnna reigned as featured on Ludacris‘ “Stand Up,” which topped the December 6, 2003, chart; and Iggy Azalea‘s introductory Hot 100 hit, “Fancy,” featuring Charli XCX, led for seven weeks in 2014.

Cardi B is also the first female soloist to top the Hot 100 with a debut track unaccompanied by another artist since Meghan Trainor, whose “All About That Bass” led for eight weeks beginning September 20, 2014.

“Bodak Yellow” rises at No. 2 on the Streaming Songs chart with 46.4 million U.S. streams, up 14 percent, in the week ending September 21, according to Nielsen Music. It bounds 12-3 on Digital Song Sales chart, up 85 percent to 56,000 downloads sold in the week ending September 21, marking the Hot 100’s top gain in download sales (aided by a 69-cent discount price in the iTunes Store).

The track also lifts 16-13 on Radio Songs, with 62 million all-format audience impressions, up 8 percent, in the week ending September 24.

“Bodak Yellow” spends a fifth week at No. 1 on the Rap Airplay chart and a second week atop R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay; crowns the Rhythmic Songs airplay chart, with a 3-1 rise; and debuts on Pop Songs on at No. 37.

Cardi B’s breakthrough hit also spends a sixth week at No. 1 on the Hot Rap Songs chart and a fourth frame atop Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.

Aguilera Releases New Single “Telepathy” from “The Get Down” Soundtrack

Christina Aguilera is transmitting her latest single to the world…

The 35-year-old half-Ecuadorian American singer has released her latest single “Telepathy,” which features Nile Rogers.

Christina Aguilera

The track, which was written by Sia Furler and produced by Nelson George, is among the songs serving as soundtracks of Baz Luhrmann‘s new Netflix series The Get Down starring Jaden Smith.

“This album is an introduction to the many musical genres and styles that can be heard in The Get Down, which is really a story of New York in the late 70’s, an incredibly fertile time of creativity amid chaos,” says Luhrmann. “While our production is a musical that embodies many classic hits, we also use contemporary sounds and techniques connecting the dots between then and now. My great privilege is to have associated with such a diverse musical community.”

Described as a disco track, the song is released ahead of the show’s premiere on August 12.

Jaden Smith also contributes to the soundtrack album along with Miguel, Nas, Zayn Malik, Leon Bridges and Janelle Monae.

“Telepathy” is available online.

Aguilera Producing Music-Based Game Show “Tracks” for Spike TV

It’s game (show) on for Christina Aguilera

The 35-year-old half-Ecuadorian American singer and The Voice coach is set to executive produce the music-based game show Tracks for Spike TV.

Christina Aguilera

The project, produced by Mission Control Media and MX Productions in association with Lionsgate, is scheduled to premiere later this year as a half-hour special on the network.

On Tracks, a team of two attempts to name a song title just by listening to its individual tracks (e.g. guitar, bass, vocal, etc.). The series will also feature surprise celebrity musical guests performing tracks – which could be their own – or others.

“Having finely tuned my ear for music over the years, I thought it would be fun to test other folks and see if they can identify a track – with a twist – since contestants will have to focus on a single component of a song,” said Aguilera. “I’m excited to have Tracks debuting on Spike TV, and proud to have this as the first project springing from our first-look deal with Lionsgate.”

Aguilera serves as executive producer.

She has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, achieved four No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and won six Grammy awards.

She has served as am on-and-off coach on NBC’s Emmy-winning The Voice since 2011.

Aguilera Makes First-Ever Trip to Ecuador to Raise Hunger Awareness

Christina Aguilera is taking her fight against world hunger to Ecuador …

The 34-year-old half-Ecuadorian American actress recently made a first-time trip to the South American country in her quest to help fight world hunger.

Christina Aguilera in Ecuador for World Hunger Relief

A volunteer global spokesperson for Yum! BrandsWorld Hunger Relief program since 2009, Aguilera shared video of the experience, which serves as a public service announcement to raise hunger awareness on behalf of the many third-world children and families struggling to survive.

The new PSA includes footage from Aguilera’s humanitarian trip where she witnessed the effects of hunger first hand and helped beneficiaries of WFP’s nutrition programs. Aguilera met with local refugee families and served food to hungry children who often times receive just one meal a day through WFP’s school feeding program.

Aguilera says the trip also allowed her to reconnect with her roots. “This particular trip was sort of extra-special for me because it is my blood and heritage,” she told the Associated Press back in September upon returning from Ecuador. “My father was born in Ecuador and my grandfather was born in Quito, which is the city I stayed in. And we would drive out in the fields which were hours away by car and into the farmland and sort of refugee areas where people are struggling.”

Aguilera says she actually chose Ecuador from a list provided to her.

“I definitely had always wanted to go visit where my dad comes from, the culture, you know, not having sort of a consistent relationship at all in my life with him and not really knowing him as I’ve gotten older through the years as well,” she shared with AP. “There’s a history there. But, you know, it is a part of my blood and a part of my heritage and a part of my people. And I would look at the faces and I would sort of … sometimes feel like I saw a resemblance. I think it’s important and I think it’s good to know where you come from and sort of get to know your roots.”

The Burlesque star returned in Season 5, but then took a long hiatus for Seasons 6 (Shakira) and Season 7, with Gwen Stefani replacing Shakira.

Aguilera then returned for Season 8, before taking yet another break for the current installment (Season 9).

The Voice is currently averaging a 3.5 rating, 11 share in adults 18-49 and 12.6 million viewers overall in L+3 in weeks 1 and 2 of the current season, according to Nielsen and the network.

The Emmy-winning reality series also debuted with six-month time-period highs for NBC on both Monday and Tuesday.

The Voice hails from United Artists Media Group, Talpa Media USA and Warner Horizon Television. The series was created by John de Mol, who serves as executive producer along with Mark Burnett, Audrey Morrissey, Lee Metzger and Jay Bienstock.

“The coaches on The Voice continue to bring incredible energy, unrivaled musical expertise and a want-to-win attitude that makes for the perfect ingredients of a two-time Emmy-winning show,” said Paul Telegdy, President, Late Night and Alternative Programming, NBC Entertainment. “We can’t wait to see what season 10 will bring.”

The 10th season of The Voice will begin in February.
