Daddy Yankee Wins Big at the Tu Música Urbano Awards

This year’s Tu Música Urbano Awards have been doled out, with the 43-year-old Puerto Rican rapper/singer taking home six awards.

Daddy Yankee was named Artist of the Year, while his chart-topping single “Con Calma” took home the Song of the Year and Male Song prizes.

Ozunatook home five awards, including Top Male Artist.

Natti Natashapicked up three awards, including Top Female Artist. The 33-year-old Dominican singer also took home Female Song for “La Mejor Versión de Mi” and Best Album Femalefor ILuminatti.

Other multiple winners include Bad BunnyJhay CortezJ BalvinAnuel AASech and Sebastian Yatra.

The show, which honored Nicky Jam’s success, also recognized Wisin & YandelSebastián YatraFarruko and ArcangelDe La Ghetto‘s careers with special awards. Tito El Bambino received the humanitarian award in recognition of his efforts to collect essential items for the affected people after the earthquake in the country.

The second edition of the Tu Música Urbano Awards were held at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico

This year’s second edition, produced by Sora and CompanyMr. and Mrs. Entertainment, was broadcast live on Telemundo Puerto Rico. A special highlights broadcast will then follow on Telemundo in the United States on Saturday at 7:00 pm ET.

Wisin & Yandel to Receive BMI President’s Award

Wisin & Yandel is presidential…

The Puerto Rican reggaeton duowill be honored with the BMI President’s Award at the 27th annual BMI Latin Awards, to be held on March 31 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills.

The Grammy-winning act will receive the honor in recognition of their outstanding achievements and contributions to the Latin music community.

“Wisin y Yandel is one of the most celebrated and influential Latin urban duos of all time,” said Alex FloresBMIsenior vice president, creative. “Through the lyrical prowess of their chart-topping hits, they galvanized the ‘golden age’ of reggaetón, which continues to influence today’s pop culture.”

Since the late ’90s, Wisin & Yandel have scored many hits on Billboard’sHot Latin Songschart, including “Rakata,” “Ahora Es,” “Llame Pa’ Verte” and “Algo Me Gusta de Ti.” Wisin y Yandel also brought reggaetón from an underground genre to the mainstream in collaborations with different artists, including Chris BrownT- PainJennifer LopezRicky MartinLuis Fonsiand Enrique Iglesias.

Along with their Grammy for Best Latin Urban Album for Los Extraterrestres, the duo has won two Latin Grammys

In addition to honoring Wisin & Yandel, BMI will also salute the songwriters, publishers and administrators of the past year’s most-performed Latin songs in the United States. The BMI Regional Mexican Song, Songwriter, BMI Contemporary Latin Song, Songwriter and Publisher of the Year will be named during the ceremony.

The 27th annual BMI Latin Awards will be hosted by BMI President & CEO Mike O’Neill and Alex Flores.

Silvia Lara Wins Deutsche Bank’s Frieze Los Angeles Film Award

There’s nothing lostabout Silvia Lara’s latest project… 

The up-and-coming Latina filmmaker was named the recipient of the inaugural Deutsche Bank Frieze Los Angeles Film Award at the opening of Frieze LA, beating out nine other finalists for the $10,000 prize.

The award, granted in partnership with the nonprofit academy Ghetto Film School, aims to recognize emerging Los Angeles-based filmmakers between the ages of 20 and 34 years old. It’s part of the second annual Frieze Los Angelesart exhibit, which takes place on the Paramount studio lot and brings works from over 70 galleries from around the world. 

Lara’s film, Beauty Never Lost, was created during a three-month program at the Ghetto Film School and captures the life and inhabitants of Whittier, California, through a series of vignettes. 

“I began as a writer and photographer, but even as a writer I always hoped to one day see my ideas onscreen. It took some time, but I eventually learned that there was such a thing as cinematography and that it would prove to be a harmonious union between my two passions: storytelling and creating images,” Lara said in a statement.

FKA Twigs Named Best British Solo Act at the NME Awards

The 32-year-old part-Spanish singer has earned a big prize at the NME Awards.

FKA Twigs was named Best British Solo Act at the awards show, which took place at the O2 Academy Brixton in London.

Last November, FKA Twigs released her sophomore album, Magdalene, featuring her acclaimed single “Cellophane.” The album wasco-produced with Nicolas Jaar. The album debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart.

The NME Awards celebrate the best of the year’s British music and pop culture.

Jonas Rivera Makes History at the Academy Awards

The 48-year-old Mexican American film producer picked up the second Academy Award of his career on Sunday night, making him the first U.S.-born Latino to win multiple Oscars.

Rivera won an Oscar as one of the producers of Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 4, which was named Best Animated Feature.

Rivera had previously won an Oscar for the 2015 film Disney/Pixar’s animated film Inside Out.

“As if my mind couldn’t be more blown about the last five minutes, thank you for that,” Rivera said during a backstage interview, after interviewers informed him that he had made history. “I’m a little bit out of my body right now. It means the world to me. I can’t even really put it into words.”

While Rivera doesn’t speak Spanish fluently, he said he feels connected to his Latino identity and that he tries to bring his culture into his work as he did in Toy Story 4by hiring Jay Hernandezto play Bonnie’s father in the movie. Rivera was particularly close to his Mexican grandfather, to whom he dedicated the animated feature Up

“The only Spanish I learned was when my grandparents would fight,” Rivera said. “You work hard, you put your guts into it … and it does happen.”

Sergio Pablos’ “Klaus” Earns BAFTA Film Award

Valadez, who directed and co-wrote the film, and Astrid Ronderoalso took home the grand jury award for Best Screenplay.

The film tells the story of Magdalena, a mother who embarks on a journey in search of her son who disappeared en route to the US border. Traveling through the foreboding towns and landscapes of northern Mexico, she meets Miguel, a young man recently deported from the United States who is making his way home. The two accompany one another: Magdalena looking for her son, and Miguel eager to see his mother again in a territory where victims and aggressors ramble together.

Angel Manuel Soto’s Charm City Kingspicked up the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Ensemble Cast.

Michael Arcoswas previously awarded the Short Films Directing prize for helming Valerio’s Day Out.

Matthew Lopez to Receive the Human Rights Campaign’s HRC Equality Award

Matthew Lopez is being honored for his inspiring work…

The Puerto Rican Broadway playwright and screenwriter will be feted by the Human Rights Campaign, receiving this year’s HRC Equality Award.

HRC, the nation’s largest LGBTQcivil rights organization, will present Lopez with his award at the 19th Annual HRC Greater New York Gala on Saturday, February 1.

“Matthew Lopez’s sweeping, groundbreaking play The Inheritance tells the important story of LGBTQ life in the 21st century, while paying homage to our rich, diverse history,” said HRC president Alphonso David. “For telling this story so powerfully, and for his contributions to the LGBTQ community, it is a true honor for HRC to present Matthew Lopez with the Equality Award.”

The Inheritance, currently playing at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, reimagines E.M. Forster’s Howards Endas the story of a group of gay men in 21st Century Manhattan. 

The 2020 HRC Greater New York Gala is set for Saturday, February 1, at the Marriott Marquisin Manhattan.
