Lin-Manuel Miranda’s father is ready for his close-up…
HBO Documentary Films has made a mid-seven figure deal for the worldwidetelevision and streaming rights to Siempre, Luis, the John James-directed documentary about Luis Miranda, the father of the 40-year-old Puerto Ricancomposer, lyricist, singer, actor and the creator and star of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musicals In the Heightsand Hamilton.
The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festivalin Park City.
When Luis A. Miranda Jr.left Puerto Rico for New York City in the 1970s, he had big dreams. He landed an influential position in New York City Mayor Ed Koch’s administration as the director of Hispanic affairs, building a career representing Latino communities, and helping to elect some of the most powerful politicians in the country.
Over the course of an intense year, James’ documentary follows Luis’ devotion to family and country propelling him forward despite recent health issues. He finds that there’s always more to do, especially when his beloved Puerto Rico is in need.
Following the devastation of Hurricane Maria, he helps plan relief efforts and, to raise money and awareness, manages the logistics behind bringing his son’s award-winning production of Hamiltonto the island. With humor and a lot of heart, Siempre, Luistells the story of a unique and proud American.
“My first film started as the story of a tireless migrant who built an extraordinary legacy,” says filmmaker John James. “Yet, as I followed Luis Miranda over a lengthy period of time, I couldn’t have imagined that he would see his native Puerto Rico face catastrophic crisis just as our mainland is thrown into bitter political upheaval. We’re excited to find a passionate partner in HBO to share this inspiring story.”

The Raíz No Rama Tourbegins at BarCodein Elizabeth, New Jersey, and will play clubs and theaters all along the East Coast before heading west.
It’ll be Ivy Queen’s first-ever bus tour, with the artist documenting her travels via a podcast.
The tour announcement coincides with the release of her new single, “Un Baile Más.” The track, on her own NKS music, highlights a slightly softer side of reggaetón’s grandest dame, as does the video, which shows couples of different ages and gender dancing together.
“The underlying question in this song was, ‘If you were dancing your last dance, who would you dance it with?” Ivy Queen tells Billboard.
While reggaetón and urban music are currently dominating charts, women are largely in scant supply.
Ivy Queen, who launched her career over 20 years ago at a time when virtually no women were performing reggaetón, has managed to remain relevant. Doing a tour that goes down to the basics, playing venues of between 500 and 1,000 people, is part of the journey, she says.

The countdown is on for Jennifer Lopez & Shakira’s highly anticipated Super Bowl performance…
For the first time ever, two Latinas will be taking over the halftime show performance that promises to be powerful, electric, and most of all meaningful for the Latinx community.
“I think it’s very important for us to convey a message unity,” Shakira said during the Super Bowl Halftime Show press conference in Miami on Thursday, January 30, sponspred by the NFL and Pepsi. “To show what a relevant force the Latin community is in this country, how much we have to offer, our idiosyncrasies, our culture that is so unique and so diverse.”
Lopez and Shakira are stoked about their performances but admit they’re feeling the pressure of this big moment in their careers.
“I never imagined singing at the Super Bowl one day,” says Jennifer Lopez, whose family has always been a fan of the New York Jets. But for Shakira, the story is different. Since she grew in Colombia, American football wasn’t really part of her life.
This year’s Super Bowl halftime show promises to have more songs, dancers and time than ever, according to the duo.
So, what will the halftime show offer? A lot of energy and incredible moments.
“When I saw her show, I was like, ‘Wow,’ and she felt the same way,” adds Lopez, who didn’t confirm if her children will be involved in the show, but did say the duo plans to pay homage to the late Kobe Bryantand his family.
“It’s nerve-racking. This moment is an example of how anything is possible no matter the size of your dreams,” Shakira said. “The Latin culture is unique and diverse and we are truly honored. “
For both women, it’s important they highlight their cultures on stage come Sunday evening to inspire the upcoming generation.
“Shakira being from Baranquilla, me being from the Bronx, the two of us could have never imagined we’d be playing the Super Bowl one day,” JLo said during the conference. “And I think it’s such a wonderful opportunity to pay homage to that and also to remind us all of what an important force we are,” Shakira added. “I wasn’t born or raised in the U.S. , but here I am—a Latina participating in this very, very American event, but also a global event. One hundred million people will be watching. I feel truly honored to be representing so many people out there.”
You can catch their Super Bowl halftime performance on Sunday, February 2.
