Cannavale to Appear in “Variety Studio: Actors on Actors” Series

Variety and PBS SoCal have announced the line-up for the fourth installment of their awards season series “Variety Studio: Actors on Actors,” with the 45-year-old half-Cuban American actor making the final cut.

Available to stream on Variety.com, the new “Actors on Actors” season will feature one-on-one discussions between this year’s Emmy contenders.

Along with Cannavale, who stars in HBO’s Vinyl, this year’s conversations, which will be printed in the June 7 issue of Variety, will also include Aziz Ansari (“Master of None”), Rachel Bloom (“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”), Emilia Clarke (“Game of Thrones”), Jamie Lee Curtis (“Scream Queens”), Kirsten Dunst (“Fargo”), Jay Duplass (“Transparent”), Billy Eichner (“Difficult People”), Sam Heughan (“Outlander”), Tom Hiddleston (“The Night Manager”), Felicity Huffman (“American Crime”), Lady Gaga (“American Horror Story”), Jennifer Lopez (“Shades of Blue”), Rob Lowe (“Grinder”), Rami Malek (“Mr. Robot”), Thomas Middleditch (“Silicon Valley”), Aaron Paul (“The Path”), Sarah Paulson (“American Crime Story”), Krysten Ritter (“Jessica Jones”), Tracee Ellis Ross (“Black-ish”), Patrick Stewart (“Blunt Talk”), John Travolta (“American Crime Story”), Courtney B. Vance (“American Crime Story”) and Kerry Washington (“Confirmation”).

“Variety is thrilled to cover the best actors on television in this season’s ‘Actors on Actors’ for PBS stations,” said Variety‘s executive TV editor Debra Birnbaum in a statement. “This season’s lineup includes actors from some of the top new television programs and showcases the wide diversity of roles for actors on broadcast, cable and streaming platforms.”

PBS SoCal will premiere the segment in two episodes, one on June 12 and the other on June 19.

Ruivivar to Star in the CW Drama Pilot “Frequency”

Anthony Ruivivar’s career has reached a new frequency

The 45-year-old part-Spanish actor has been cast in Frequency, the CW’s drama pilot based on Toby Emmerich’s sci-fi thriller.

The television project, written by Supernatural showrunner Jeremy Carver, also stars Riley Smith, Peyton List and Mekhi Phifer.

Frequency centers on Raimy (List), a police detective in 2016 who discovers that she’s able to speak via a ham radio with her estranged father, Frank Sullivan (Smith), a detective who died in 1996.

Ruivivar will play Stan Hope, an NYPD plainclothes detective who is Frank’s handler with the department, who calls the shots on Frank’s day-to-day undercover operation.

Ruivivar’s credits include Banshee and American Horror Story.

New Line Cinema Acquires Rights to Gomez-Rejon’s Will Smith-Starrer “Collateral Beauty”

Life’s a beauty for Alfonso Gomez-Rejon

New Line Cinema has acquired worldwide rights on the Latino filmmaker’s upcoming project Collateral Beauty.

In the Gomez-Rejon’s film, Will Smith stars as a New York advertising executive who experiences a personal tragedy and the subsequent unconventional plan from his colleagues to break him out of his depression.

Overbrook Entertainment is coming aboard to co-produce the project alongside Anonymous Content, PalmStar Media and Likely Story.

Written by Allan Loeb, the project will be directed by Gomez-Rejon (Me And Earl And The Dying Girl). 

PalmStar and Likely Story paid $2.25 million for the script.

Principal photography is expected to begin in October.

Gomez-Rejon’s previously directed the film The Town That Dreaded Sundown, as well as episodes for Red Band Society, The Carrie Diaries, American Horror Story and Glee.

Michele Appears in First Official Look at Fox’s “Scream Queens”

Lea Michele is bracing for a Screamfest…

The 28-year-old part-Spanish actress and former Glee star gets her geek on in the first official teaser for Fox’s highly anticipated show Scream Queens.

In the clip for the comedy/horror anthology from Glee and American Horror Story mastermind Ryan Murphy, Michele appears to be having a bad hair day while wearing a neck brace in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment.

The series revolved around a college rocked by a series of murders. “Worst case scenario. There is a serial killer on the loose,” says Jamie Lee Curtis’ character Cathy Munsch, the dean of students at the college.

In addition to the quick look at Michele’s character and Curtis, the clip also offers at look at stars Ariana Grande and Emma Roberts.

The cast also includes Keke Palmer, Skyler Samuels, Billie Lourd and Oliver Hudson.

Scream Queens is produced by 20th Century Fox Television in association Ryan Murphy Television.

The 15-episode first season premieres in the fall.

Trailer Released for Gomez-Rejon’s Horror Meta-Remake “The Town That Dreaded Sundown”

MGM has released the first trailer for the Latino film and television director’s horror meta-remake The Town That Dreaded Sundown, which hails from producers Jason Blum and Ryan Murphy.

Following the events of the low-budget 1976 slasher from Charles B. Pierce, The Town That Dreaded Sundown picks up decades after the Phantom Killer terrorized rural Texarkana when the murders start again and a teenager (Californication’s Addison Timlin) finds herself in the killer’s sights.

It’s Gomez-Rejon’s first time directing a feature.

Written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the film will have its first public screening this month at Austin’s Fantastic Fest before MGM’s Orion Pictures releases it in October.

Gomez-Rejon, who was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Directing For a Miniseries for American Horror Story: Coven, has directed several episodes of Glee and American Horror Story. He also directed an episode of The Carrie Diaries and the pilot for Red Band Society.

Salazar to Star Opposite Shailene Woodley and Theo James in the “Divergent” Sequel “Insurgent”

It looks like Rosa Salazar has ties to insurgent groups…

The Canadian-born Latina actress, best known for her role on NBC’s drama series Parenthood, has joined the science fictionaction film Insurgent, based on the novel of the same name by Veronica Roth.

Salazar will portray Lynn in the sequel to the Divergent and the second installment in the Divergent film series.

Summit’s follow-up to the blockbuster hitsees the return of Shailene Woodley and Theo James as citizens in a world where people are divided into factions based on certain values.

Robert Schwentke is directing the sequel — currently shooting in Atlanta — from a script by Brian Duffield and Akiva Goldsman.

The sequel, set for release March 20, 2015, sees most of the cast returning, including Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Kate Winslet, Jai Courtney and Zoe Kravitz. Among new additions are Octavia Spencer, who will play Johanna, Suki Waterhouse, Naomi Watts, Daniel Dae Kim and Jonny Weston.

The story follows Tris (Woodley) and Four (James), now fugitives on the run, who must find out what Tris’ family sacrificed their lives to protect, and why the Erudite leaders will do anything to stop them.

Lynn is one of the Dauntless-born initiates, and, in Veronica Roth‘s books, she’s described as beautiful and sporting a shaved head. She’s good friends with Uriah and Marlene (Waterhouse) in the books.

The first film based on Roth’s popular YA series, Divergent, opened in March, going on to earn $267 million worldwide.

In addition to Parenthood, Salazar also appeared on the first season of American Horror Story.

Her film credits include voicing a character in Epic and appearing in the 2014 film Jamesy Boy. She’ll next be seen in the upcoming films Search Party, Night Owls, Submerged and May the Best Man Win.

Serratos Upped to Series Regular on AMC’s “The Walking Dead”

Expect to see more of Christian Serratos on AMC’s The Walking Dead

The network has upped the 23-year-old part-Mexican actress to series regular for The Walking Dead’s fifth season.

Serratos joined the cast of the blockbuster zombie apocalypse in September, portraying Rosita Espinosa beginning in the series’ tenth episode of Season 4.

Her character is one of the military crew trying to escort a scientist to Washington, DC with hopes of finding a cure for the zombie infection.

Serratos is best known for portarying Bella’s (Kristen Stewart) best friend Angela in Summit Entertainment’s The Twilight Saga series. Her other credits include appearances on The Secret Life of the American Teenager and American Horror Story.

The fifth season of The Walking Dead Season 5 is set to debut in October.

Salazar to Star in the Indie Dramedy “Night Owls”

The Canadian-born Latina actress has been cast in Night Owls.

Salazar, who best known for her role as Zoe on the NBC series Parenthood, will star opposite Adam Pally in the indie dramedy from director Charles Hood.

Pally will portray a workaholic who has a drunken one-night stand with a beautiful train wreck (Salazar) — who he discovers to his horror is his boss’ jilted ex-mistress.

Salazar’s other credits include American Horror Story, Ben and Kate and Law & Order: LA.

Salazar Cast in NBC’s Comedy “The Pro”

There’s no denying Rosa Salazar is a pro, especially after landing her next television project.

The Latina actress, who rose to acclaim on NBC’s family drama Parenthood, has been cast in the network’s Rob Lowe-Rob Riggle comedy The Pro, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The comedy, which is set in and around a tennis and golf club pro shop, stars Lowe as Ben Bertrahm, a former doubles champion who is reunited with his ex-partner Bobby Welch (Riggle) after a public feud that left them both floundering in life.

Salazar will play Jamie, the naive girl with a big heart who works at the pro shop as a receptionist. The character with an edge has romantic feelings for the club’s snack bar himbo, Chad, and has had her heart broken a few times.

Her recent credits include HBO‘s Hello Ladies, Ben and Kate and American Horror Story. She also co-starred in Fox‘s family assassin drama Boomerang last pilot season.

King of the Hill‘s Peter Huyck and Alex Gregory will pen the script for The Pro.

Key & Peele‘s Colton Dunn co-stars as Lewis, the club’s head engineer and bookie.

Salazar Signs Talent Holding Deal with ABC/ABC Studios

Rosa Salazar could be appearing on the Alphabet Network in the near future…

The Canadian-born Latina actress has signed a talent holding deal with ABC and ABC Studios targeted for television’s next pilot season.

Last season, the American Horror Story alum had a talent deal at Fox, where she co-starred in the drama pilot Boomerang and guest starred on the network’s freshman comedy Ben & Kate.

The previous season, Salazar co-starred in another Fox pilot, comedy Little Brother.

Additionally, she had an important recurring role as Zoe on NBC’s Parenthood and VH1′s Stevie TV. She regularly appears in College Humor originals and guest stars on HBO’s upcoming comedy series Hello Ladies.

On the feature side, Salazar just wrapped a supporting role in Universal’s Search Party and a starring turn in the indie May The Best Man Win.
