USA Network to Premiere Rosario Dawson’s “Briarpatch” Series in February

USA Network has set the mid-winter premiere date for Sam Esmail’s new anthology drama Briarpatchled by 40-year-old Puerto Rican and Cuban American actress on Thursday, February 6.

Briarpatchfollows Allegra Dill (Dawson), a no-nonsense professional who returns to her quirky hometown to solve her sister’s murder. 

The inaugural season celebrates the genres represented by Ross Thomas’ book — a stylish blend of crime and pulp fiction — while updating his sense of fun, danger and place for a new generation. 

Jay R. FergusonEdi GathegiBrian Geraghty and Kim Dickens also star.

The 10-episode Briarpatchwas written for television by Greenwald, who executive produces alongside Esmail through his production company Esmail Corp and Anonymous Content’s Chad Hamilton

Dawson also is a producer on the series from UCP and Paramount Television.

The 39-year-old Puerto Rican and Cuban American actress is set as the lead of USA Network’s hourlong pilot Briarpatch, fromUniversal Cable Productions, Paramount Television, Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail’s Esmail Corp and Anonymous Content.

Written by Andy Greenwald and based on the Ross Thomas novel, Briarpatch centers on Allegra “Pick” Dill (Dawson), a tenacious and highly-skilled investigator working in Washington, DC for a young, ambitious senator. When her ten-years-younger sister, a homicide detective, is killed by a car bomb, Allegra returns to her corrupt Texas hometown. What begins as a search for the murderer becomes a fraught and dangerous excavation of the past Allegra has long sought to bury.

Dawson will also serve as producer on the project, described as celebrating the book’s blend of crime, thriller, mystery, and pulp fiction while updating Thomas’ sense of fun, danger and place for a new generation.

Dawson was recently seen in the film Krystal. On television, she has played Claire Temple on Netflix’s Marvel series Daredevil, Luke Cage Iron Fist, Jessica Jones and The Defenders and also has been recurring on the CW’s Jane the Virgin.

Bobby Cannavale to Star in Amazon’s Drama Series “Homecoming”

Bobby Cannavale is coming home…

The 47-year-old half-Cuban American actor will co-star opposite Julia Roberts and Stephan James in Homecoming, the half-hour drama from Universal Cable ProductionsMr. Robot creator Sam Esmail and Anonymous Content.

The project has a two-season straight-to-series order at Amazon.

Homecoming, based on Gimlet Media’s breakout fictional podcast, is written by the podcast’s creators Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg and directed by Esmail.

It’s described a psychological thriller that centers on Heidi (Roberts), a caseworker at a secret government facility, and a soldier (James) eager to rejoin civilian life.

Cannavale plays Colin Belfast, the ambitious off-site supervisor of the Homecoming Initiative.

Presented in a collage of telephone calls, therapy sessions and overheard conversations, the Homecoming podcast had a cast led by Catherine Keener that also included Oscar Isaac, David Schwimmer, Amy Sedaris and David Cross. Keener voiced the caseworker, Isaac the soldier and Schwimmer the supervisor.

Filming is slated to begin in Los Angeles in April 2018. Amazon Studios will have global rights to Homecoming, which will premiere globally exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.

Cannavale, who starred on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, appears on USA Network’s drama series Mr. RobotHe will next be seen in I, Tonya and Jumanji as well as Going Places, The Wasp and Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman.

Alfonso Cuarón Reportedly Working on Horror Television Series

Alfonso Cuarón is ready to bring the drama to television…

The 55-year-old Mexican filmmaker is reportedly working with Anonymous Content on a drama series, which is being pitched to pay cable and streaming outlets, garnering interest from multiple networks, according to Deadline.com.

Cuarón would work with actor Casey Affleck on the project.

Details about the project are being kept under wraps, but it is rumored to be a horror genre series that tracks the origins of a cult.

Cuarón is writing, directing and executive producing; Affleck is starring and executive producing. Anonymous Content, which signed Cuarón earlier this year, is producing.

Cuarón, who won the Best Director Oscar for directing Gravity, has a diverse feature resume that also includes Children of Men, Y Tu Mama Tambien and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

His next movie, Roma, is slated for release next year.

On the television side, Cuarón previously co-created and executive produced the NBC drama series Believe

Axat’s “Kill the Next One” to Get Film Adaptation

Federico Axat’s work is headed to the big screen…

Anonymous Content and Campanario Entertainment have joined forces to acquire the rights to the 41-year-old Argentine author’s novel Kill the Next One.

Craig Rosenberg will write the screenplay based on Axat’s book.

First published to acclaim in Spanish as La Ultima Salida, the novel is now rolling out around the world in 30 languages, mostly under the title The Last Way Out. It was recently published in the U.S. by the Hachette imprint Mulholland Books.

Kill the Next One

The thriller’s protagonist, Ted McKay, is about to put a bullet in his brain when his doorbell rings and a stranger makes him an offer worth a temporary stay of self-execution: a last heroic act that would protect his family from the pain of his suicide. McKay soon finds himself at the center of a grisly game of manipulation and death.

The novel is the third from the Buenos Aires-born Axat.

Cordova will play Chris Martinez, a fiercely ambitious cellular phone salesman methodically putting together an illicit drug empire with Mrs. Candy.

Cordova has recurred on Ray Donovan and The Good Wife.

Netflix Gives Gomez’s “13 Reasons Why” a Straight-to-Series Order

Netflix has given Anonymous Content and Paramount Television’s 13 Reasons Why, executive produced by the 23-year-old half-Mexican American actress/singer, a straight-to-series order.

The show, based on the New York Times bestselling Young Adult (YA) book by Jay Asher, was created by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Brian Yorkey, who also wrote the pilot.

13 Reasons Why is the second Netflix straight to order series for Anonymous Content. The first is the Plan B collaboration The OA, which goes into production next quarter.

Gomez recently wrapped four films: In Dubious Battle, directed by James FrancoThe Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving, alongside Paul RuddThe Big Short, starring Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling and Christian Bale; and Seth Rogen’s Neighbors 2.

Most recently, she reprised her role as Mavis in Sony PicturesHotel Transylvania 2, which opened to record-breaking box office.

She is not starring in 13 Reasons Why.

As a recording artist, Gomez has sold more than 22 million singles worldwide, and her new album Revival debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. She will embark on a global tour next year.

New Line Cinema Acquires Rights to Gomez-Rejon’s Will Smith-Starrer “Collateral Beauty”

Life’s a beauty for Alfonso Gomez-Rejon

New Line Cinema has acquired worldwide rights on the Latino filmmaker’s upcoming project Collateral Beauty.

In the Gomez-Rejon’s film, Will Smith stars as a New York advertising executive who experiences a personal tragedy and the subsequent unconventional plan from his colleagues to break him out of his depression.

Overbrook Entertainment is coming aboard to co-produce the project alongside Anonymous Content, PalmStar Media and Likely Story.

Written by Allan Loeb, the project will be directed by Gomez-Rejon (Me And Earl And The Dying Girl). 

PalmStar and Likely Story paid $2.25 million for the script.

Principal photography is expected to begin in October.

Gomez-Rejon’s previously directed the film The Town That Dreaded Sundown, as well as episodes for Red Band Society, The Carrie Diaries, American Horror Story and Glee.

Brühl Signs with Anonymous Content

It looks like you’ll be seeing more of Daniel Brühl in Hollywood films…

The 35-year-old half-Spanish actor has signed with talent management agency Anonymous Content.

Brühl is currently earning rave reviews for his starring role in Ron Howard’s Formula One period piece Rush, in which he plays Austrian driver Niki Lauda, the fierce rival of Chris Hemsworth’s brash British racer, James Hunt.

In October, Bruhl will portray another living person, the former Wikileaks spokesperson Daniel Domscheit-Berg, in DreamWorks‘ The Fifth Estate.

Bruhl’s other English-language credits include Inglorious Basterds, The Bourne Ultimatum and 2 Days in Paris.

He recently wrapped the thriller A Most Wanted Man, starring opposite Phillip Seymour Hoffman.
