Luna to Star in Amazon’s Casanova-Themed Drama Pilot

Diego Luna is ready to romance Amazon

The 35-year-old Mexican actor will star in Amazon and Electus’ Giacomo Casanova drama pilot, which is being directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amelie).

Diego Luna

Luna, who rose to acclaim in Y tu mamá también, has been tapped for the title role, with Bojana Novakovic, Miranda Richardson, Ben Daniels and Amelia Clarkson co-starring.

The untitled project, which is currently filming in Europe, chronicles a little-known period in the life of the famous 18th century renaissance man. Known primarily as a womanizer, Casanova actually served as a spy for the Parisian government.

The show begins after he breaks free from Venice’s most impenetrable prison and moves to Paris with nothing—determined to start his life over after his wild ways left him behind bars. Following a journey full of passionate romance and incredible danger, the series will reveal the other side of the infamous Venetian, whose talents ranged from diplomacy to music to linguistics.

Novakovic plays the famous French royal mistress Madame de Pompadour, Richardson is Marquise d’Urfé, Daniels portrays Francois-Joachim de Bernis, and Clarkson plays Manon Balletti.

Stu Zicherman wrote the script.

The finished pilot will be made available on Amazon later this year.

Luna’s previous credits include the films Elysium and Casa de Mi Padre, an appearance in Katy Perry’s music video “The One That Got Away,” and the television movie Fidel.

If you didn’t get enough of Diego Luna in Katy Perry’s heartbreaking video for “The One That Got Away,” you’re in luck…

Perry has released the extended version of the clip, featuring longer opening and closing scenes that include más of the 32-year-old Mexican actor.

The original video, directed by Floria Sigismondi, had a running time of five minutes while the new director’s cut is seven-minutes long.

As with the original, the clip starts off with old Perry arriving at her oh-so-posh home. This time though, there are more clips of her wandering around the house, slowly arranging her stuff, and going into deep thought about her past.

In the living room, the elder Perry’s mind waxes nostalgic about her long gone lover, played by Luna. A quick montage of their happy relationship fills the screen while old Perry continues to flashback to her younger days with Luna.

The relationship goes sour and the two lovers separate with Luna getting into a tragic accident. An extended closing to the heart-breaking story presents Perry driving off into the beautiful and calm sunset.

The song was part of Perry’s Teenage Dream album, which was released in August 24, 2010.

Perry premiered the heart-wrenching clip online and on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Friday. The beautifully shot clip features the singer and Luna as star-crossed lovers; and perfectly runs through the joy of falling in love and the heartbreak of letting go.

Directed by Floria Sigismondi, the majority of the clip is set in the past, as a sad and aged Perry relives her fiery romance with Luna’s character.

It ends with a traumatic event and an oh-so-heartbreaking tune: Johnny Cash‘s sobering version of “You Are My Sunshine.”
