Cristian Garin Ousts Top Seed Alexander Zverev to Reach BMW Open Semifinals

Cristian Garin is celebrating a major upset…

The 27-year-old Chilean professional tennis player defeated top seed Alexander Zverev on Friday in the BMW Open quarterfinals.

Cristian Garin,In the process, Garin picked up his fourth career Top 10 victory.

Two of those have now come against Zverev in Munich.

He previously ousted the German tennis star five years ago in three sets at the same 250-level event.

Playing in cold, windy and damp conditions, Garin saved both break points he faced in the opening set—one at 2-1 after breaking Zverev and one when serving for it at 5-4.

In a pivotal 18-point game midway through the second set, the world No. 5 dropped serve for the second time. Garin engaged the bulk of the finishing rally to Zverev’s backhand side, eventually getting enough weight behind an inside-out forehand to force an error.

Zverev, who opted to layer up with a long-sleeved undershirt and compression leggings, couldn’t warm up enough to combat his opponent’s ball-striking. Garin served out the contest on his second match point when Zverev shanked a forehand return.

“Maybe this weather’s good for my game,” laughed Garin during his on-court interview.

“I just tried to play my game, to be focused because it’s not easy to play in these conditions. I’m so happy with the way I’m playing this week. I’ve been fighting for every point.”

Garin will return to the Top 100 next Monday with his effort this week.

In 2019, Garin backed up his upset win over Zverev by riding the momentum to the title. Third seed Taylor Fritz stands between him and another championship match opportunity.

Fritz equaled his 2023 showing by rallying past sixth seed Jack Draper, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (1).

Tomas Martin Etcheverry Defeats Cameron Norrie to Reach Barcelona Open Semifinals

Tomas Martin Etcheverry is one step closer to a Spanish title…

The 24-year-old Argentine professional tennis player defeated Cameron Norrie to advance to the Barcelona Open semifinals.

Etcheverry, ranked No. 30 in the workd, stormed through two tiebreakers to win 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-1).

Norrie and Etcheverry went head-to-head for only the second time in their careers during Friday’s match.

Their only previous encounter came last February in Buenos Aires, where Norrie prevailed 5-7, 6-0, 6-3–also in the quarterfinals.

But Etcheverry has made significant improvements in his game over the past 14 months. Along with being up to No. 30 in the world, he made a run to the French Open quarterfinals last spring.

Proir to knocking out Norrie, Etcheverry ousted Nick Hardt and Brandon Nakashima.

Norwegian third seed Casper Ruud, who claimed a straightforward 6-4 6-3 win over Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi, awaits Etcheverry.

Peso Pluma Releases Music Video for DJ Snake-Assisted Track “Teka”

Peso Pluma has slithered his way to a new collaboration…

After premiering the track at Coachella last weekend, the 24-year-old Mexican singer has officially released the new collaborative single, “Teka,” with DJ Snake.

Peso Pluma

Released via Interscope Records, the song blends the styles of both internationally-renowned artists to create a beat you’re bound to hear on a dance floor soon. Or, as Peso Pluma puts it, it’s “gonna rock the discotheque, theque, theque, theque, theque.”

If the massive crowd at the Sahara Tent for DJ Snake’s Coachella set was any indicator, the song is sure to be an upcoming summer staple.

An instant crowd-pleaser, the song has already amassed almost 300,000 plays on Spotify. Now, Peso Pluma and DJ Snake have released the official music video.

The video offers a whole new perspective on the tried-and-true musical “car test.” In the video, directed by Benjamin Mege, DJ Snake and Peso Pluma are listening to the track on the car stereo when they notice tiny people dancing within the vehicle’s speakers. A mini-dancefloor comes alive within its dashboard and everyone gets down, including grandma.

Sleek lighting and cinematography add depth to the video’s lighthearted narrative, with artistic angles complimenting the track. When DJ Snake and Peso Pluma are stopped and asked to take off their sunglasses, they, too, join the dance party within the car’s speaker.

Los Lobos to Be Subject of Feature-Length Documentary Film

The origin story of Los Lobos is getting the Hollywood treatment…

The Mexican-American four-time Grammy-winning rock band, which has helped bring Chicano music to the masses over the last 50 years, will be the subject of the feature-length documentary with the working title Los Lobos Native Sons, currently in production and slated for a 2025 release.

Los Lobos

The film features testimonials from George Lopez, Linda Ronstadt, Tom Waits, Dolores Huerta, Bonnie Raitt, Flaco Jimenez and Cheech Marin, among others.

Formed more than 50 years ago in East Los Angeles, the group is unique and versatile, able to play roots rock, Musica Mexicana, soul, folk and a galaxy of other styles.

The film is co-directed by veteran filmmaker, producer and editor Doug Blush and photographer/filmmaker Piero F. Giunti, and produced by Robert Corsini and Flavio Morales.

Blush says,  “Los Lobos, as much as any modern band, has expanded and re-defined what’s possible in American music, and in their phenomenal half-century and counting, they’ve created a global fan base that proves that the wolf is very, very alive.”

The group was founded by David Hidalgo (vocals, guitar), Louie Pérez (drums, vocals, guitar), Cesar Rosas (vocals, guitar) and Conrad Lozano (bass, vocals, guitarrón). They played revved-up versions of Mexican folk music in restaurants and at parties.

The band evolved in the 1980s as it tapped into LA’s burgeoning punk and college rock scenes, sharing bills with the Circle Jerks, Public Image Ltd., and the Blasters, whose saxophonist, Steve Berlin, would eventually leave that group to join Los Lobos in 1984.

A major turning point came in 1987 with the release of the Ritchie Valens biopic La Bamba. The quintet’s cover of Valens’ signature song topped the charts in the U.S. and the U.K. Rather than capitalize on that massive commercial success, Los Lobos instead chose to record “La Pistola y El Corazón,” a tribute to Tejano and Mariachi music that won the 1989 Grammy for Best Mexican-American Performance. The group has moved from strength to strength in the years since, receiving everything from a Hispanic Heritage Award to transforming their song “Kiko” into a surreal skit about Elmo on Sesame Street.

Juan Gabriel’s “Amor Eterno” Added to Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry

One of the late Juan Gabriel’s most iconic songs is being preserved…

The Library of Congress has added the late Mexican singer/songwriter’s “Amor Eterno” to its National Recording Registry, which designates recordings worthy of preservation “based on their cultural, historical or aesthetic importance in the nation’s recorded sound heritage.”

Juan GabrielGabriel’s heartrending ballad, which he wrote the in memory of his deceased mother, has long been a staple in the singer’s native Mexico and across Latin America.

Gabriel died in 2016 at the age of 66, but his son, Ivan Gabriel Aguilera, said his father would have been thrilled to see one of his most famous songs be enshrined in the registry. Aguilera talked with the Library about the song’s induction into the registry in Spanish.

“I believe that future generations – that’s what he always wanted – that they see his music and make it relatable to their lives as well. He would always say that ‘as long as the public, people, keep singing my music, Juan Gabriel will never die,’ and it’s nice to see that happening here,” Aguilera said. “It’s something wonderful for us. It’s such a great honor. It’s a great honor for my dad. I think that for his legacy it is something great. As you say, he’s going to be immortalized there in the Library of Congress.”

But Juan Gabriel isn’t the only Latinx artist to have a song added to this year’s registry.

The late Héctor Lavoe’s 1978 single “El Cantante” was also among the 25 songs selected.

El Cantante” is the signature song of the late Puerto Rican salsa singer and first single of the album Comedia. The song was written by Rubén Blades and produced by Willie Colón.

Among the 25 selected this year are ABBA’s “Dancing Queen,” Blondie’s “Parallel Lines,” The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Ready to Die,” Green Day’s “Dookie” and The Chicks’ “Wide Open Spaces.”

Members of the public can submit nominations for the registry on the Library’s website. Almost 2,900 were submitted this year.

Rachel Zegler to Star in New Broadway Production of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo + Juliet” This Fall

Rachel Zegler has landed a star-crossed starring role…

The 22-year-old half-Colombian American Golden Globe-winning actress will star opposite Kit Connor in the new Broadway production of William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet this fall.

Rachel Zegler, Kit ConnorDirected by Tony Award winner Sam Gold, the production will feature music by Grammy winner Jack Antonoff and movement by Tony winner Sonya Tayeh.

The Gold fall production will mark the Broadway debuts of Connor, Zegler and Antonoff, who in February won his third consecutive Grammy Award for Producer of the Year.

More information including theatre, dates, design team and additional casting will be announced at a later date.

“With the presidential election coming up in November, I felt like making a show this fall that celebrates youth and hope, and unleashes the anger young people feel about the world they are inheriting,” said Gold.

Tickets will go on sale to the public in May.

Official synopsis: “The youth are fucked. Left to their own devices in their parents’ world of violent ends, an impulsive pair of star-crossed lovers hurtle towards their inescapable fate. The intoxicating high of passion quickly descends into a brutal chaos that can only end one way.”

Zegler earned a Golden Globe for her performance in West Side Story.
