Canelo Alvarez is looking to return to the ring in May…

The 32-year-old Mexican professional boxer, the undisputed super middleweight champion, says he’ll be ready to return to the ring in May and hopes to get a rematch against light heavyweight titlist Dmitry Bivol in September.

Alvarez (58-2-2, 39) made the announcement during an event in Mexico City to present his new drink brand VMC.

Alvarez finished 2022 with a 1-1 record, including a victory in the trilogy fight against Gennadiy Golovkin in September and a loss to Bivol in May.

“My plan right now is to return in May. I’m going to start training in January and see how I feel after that,” Alvarez said, referring to his recovery from left wrist surgery last month that put his May return in jeopardy.

About a possible opponent for May, he said Bivol is not an option, even though he does want the rematch later in the year.

“The idea is to return in May with a tuneup fight to see how I feel and then get the rematch against Bivol in September,” Alvarez said. “That’s the only thing I want for my career right now.”

Alvarez, ESPN’s No. 5 pound-for-pound fighter, does have his eyes on the super middleweight bout between Caleb Plant and David Benavidez, a mandatory fight recently ordered by the WBC. ESPN ranks Canelo No. 1, Benavidez No. 2 and Plant No. 3 in that division.

“Let’s see how that fight goes,” Alvarez said. “It’s a very competitive fight and to me, I see Benavidez winning, but my focus is on the Bivol rematch.”

Brandon Larracuente is expanding his medical service…

The 27-year-old Puerto Rican actor, who portrays Dr. Danny Perez on ABC’s The Good Doctor, has been promoted to series regular in the popular medical drama from executive producer and showrunner David Shore, Sony Pictures Television and ABC Signature.

Larracuente, who has recurred in the role this season, is a first-year surgical resident at St. Bonaventure Hospital. Strikingly handsome with a natural, easy charm, he leans on his big heart and positive attitude to navigate the challenges of his first year. But Perez’s dazzling smile hides a painful past, including a years-long struggle with opioid addiction. The Good Doctor stars Freddie Highmore as Dr. Shaun Murphy, a surgeon with autism and savant syndrome who continues to use his extraordinary medical gifts at St. Bonaventure Hospital’s surgical unit. Following their long-awaited wedding festivities and his promotion to surgical attending, Shaun and Lea’s relationship is immediately put to the test and they must learn to navigate life together as a married couple. The Good Doctor marks its 100th episode when it returns on Monday, November 14. In the episode, titled “Hot and Bothered,” in the midst of a heatwave, Dr. Shaun Murphy and Dr. Danica Powell are at odds when it comes to their patient’s surgery. Their heated stalemate tests Shaun’s patience and his willingness to compromise. Meanwhile, when the hospital loses power, Lea and Dr. Aaron Glassman are forced to come up with a quick solution or risk a total shutdown that could risk patients’ lives.

“Hot and Bothered” was written by David Hoselton and David Renaud and directed by Shore.

Larracuente was the lead in Freeform’s reboot of Party of Five and is known for his major recurring role on Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why. He also played Kyle Chandler’s son in Bloodline.

Miles Gutierrez-Riley is preparing for the best…

The Latino actor will star in drama I Wish You All the Best, based on Mason Deaver’s bestselling 2019 novel of the same name.

Tommy Dorfman will write, direct and produce the film for ACE Entertainment, with Corey Fogelmanis tapped as the lead.

Others set for Dorfman’s first feature, which had previously cast Alexandra Daddario, include Amy Landecker, Judson Mills, Lexi Underwood, Lisa Yamada and Brian Michael Smith.

I Wish You All the Best will have Fogelmanis play the creative, bright and introverted Ben, a non-binary teen who has spent their life pretending to be the perfect “son” to their ultra-religious Southern parents. When Ben is kicked out of the house and moves in with their estranged sister, they embark upon a journey of self-discovery that teaches them about love, friendship and family.

Gutierrez-Riley starred on Prime Video’s drama series The Wilds and can currently be seen in Sanaa Lathan’s TIFF-premiering musical drama On the Come Up, which was released in limited theaters and on Paramount+ in September.

The actor will next appear in the comedy The Moon & Back with Isabel May, Missi Pyle and Nat Faxon and the comedy Sweethearts with Kiernan Shipka.

Lana Parrilla has new representation…

The 45-year-old half-Puerto Rican actress has signed with the Agency for the Performing Arts (APA).

Parrilla recently boarded Netflix’s Jennifer Lopez-starring AI drama Atlas, which will be directed by Brad Peyton.

Parrilla played Regina Mills, aka The Evil Queen, for 156 episodes on ABC’s hit series Once Upon a Time. Her work on the series earned her the NHMC Impact Award; an ALMA Award for Outstanding TV Actress; a Teen Choice Award for Choice TV Actress: Fantasy / Sci-Fi; and, as voted by fans, TV Guide’s Best Villain twice.

She recently starred on Marc Cherry’s Paramount+ series Why Women Kill, a role for which she received a Gracie Award for Best Supporting Actress in Comedy. She also starred alongside Bobby Soto, Shia LaBeouf and George Lopez in David Ayer’s indie thriller The Tax Collector.

Prior to that, Parrilla was a series regular on ABC’s sitcom Spin City, Graham Yost’s Boomtown, 24, Swingtown, and on Jerry Bruckheimer’s medical drama Miami Medical. 

In addition to her on-screen work, Parrilla stepped behind the camera and went on to direct one of the final episodes of Once Upon a Time. She also executive produced the documentary Split at the Root, which premiered this year at SXSW.

It’s a Buteau-ful moment for Linda Mendoza.

The Mexican American film and television director is set to helm the first two episodes of Netflix’s Michelle Buteau comedy series Survival of the Thickest.

The series stars Buteau as Mavis Beaumont, Black, plus-size and newly single, but not by her choice. Mavis unexpectedly finds herself having to rebuild her life as a struggling stylist. She’s determined to not only survive but thrive with the support of her chosen family, a body positive attitude, and a cute v-neck with some lip gloss.

Survival of the Thickest, which is based on Buteau’s book, was created by Buteau and Danielle Sanchez-Witzel. The latter will serve as showrunner. It comes from A24.

Mendoza has previously directed episodes of Never Have I Ever, 30 Rock and Girls5Eva.
