Lin-Manuel Miranda to Take Part in Virtual Birthday Fundraiser for Harry Belafonte

Lin-Manuel Miranda is helping celebrate a living legend…

The 41-year-old Puerto Rican actor, singer, songwriter, rapper, composer, director, producer, author and playwright will honor Harry Belafonte, who will turn 94 years old on March 1, during a virtual birthday concert.

Miranda is among a cadre of friends and famous fans that will gather this Sunday for a virtual event that will feature performances, video tributes and testimonials by civil rights and racial justice leaders, politicians, artists, athletes and more. It will serve as a fundraiser for Belafonte’s Gathering for Justice organization and is sponsored in part by the Hope and Robert F. Smith family.

Belafonte founded the organization in 2005 after seeing a news story of a 5-year-old Black girl who was cuffed and arrested in her Florida classroom for “being unruly.” Since then, the organization’s mission is to build a movement to end child incarceration while working to eliminate racial inequities.

Titled The Gathering for Harry, the event will feature Common, Danny Glover, Alfre Woodard, Chuck D, Bernie and Jane Sanders, Stacey Abrams, Aloe Blacc, Tamika D. Mallory, Rev. Al Sharpton, Jackie Cruz, Aja Monet, Mysonne the General, Diane Nash, Carmen Perez-Jordan, DJ Carisma, Bryan Stevenson, Bernadette Peters, Christopher Jackson, Tony Shalhoub and more.

As of February 23, event organizers announced that Jay-Z was confirmed to appear to accept a Gatekeeper of Truth Award. Also new to the list are Tiffany Haddish, Usher, Miranda, Charlamagne Tha God, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Susan Sarandon, Pete Buttigieg and others.

The virtual party will be held Sunday, February 28, at 7:00 pm ET.

Jarmusch writes and directs the film his third with Focus Features. The studio previously released the filmmaker’s highest-grossing pic in his canon, 2005’s Broken Flowers starring Bill Murray which made $13.7M.

Dania Ramirez to Star in Sony’s “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” Sequel

The 39-year-old Dominican actress and former Devious Maidsstar has landed a role in Sony’s sequel to Jumanji: Welcome to the Junglewhich is being directed and co-written by Jake Kasdan.

Plot details are being kept under wraps.

Luna Launches Branded Entertainment Studio, Gloria

It’s all guts and Gloria for Diego Luna

The 35-year-old Mexican actor/director/producer and his business partners Pablo Cruz and Eric Bonniot have officially launched the branded entertainment studio, Gloria.

Luna and Cruz, along with Gael Garcia Bernal, are also co-founders of the Mexican production and distribution company Canana.

Based in Los Angeles and Mexico City, Gloria is working on projects in both English- and Spanish-speaking markets.

“The Latino community is hugely influential and we want to work with brands to tell stories that are relevant and real,” said Luna, who was recently cast in Star Wars: Rogue One.

Gloria’s upcoming projects include a feature-length branded documentary and it is currently in production on a six-part web series for Mexico’s largest department store chain.

Among the talent working with Gloria are Gravity co-writer Jonas Cuaron and Alonso Ruizpalacios, the award-winning director of Gueros.

As for Luna, has had a busy year so far. Along with being cast in Star Wars: Rogue One, he directed the Danny GloverMaya Rudolph road movie Mr. Pig.

Trailer Released for Cabezas’ Action-Thriller “Rage”

Paco Cabezas next project will be all the rage this summer…

The official trailer has been released for the Spanish filmmaker’s latest film Rage, starring Nicolas Cage.

“No child should have to pay for her father’s sins,” announces the clip for the action thriller.

Cage portrays Paul Maguire, a businessman with some serious skeletons whose teenage daughter is swiped by masked thugs one night. He goes after the bad guys with some serious malice.

In addition to Cage, the film also stars Rachel Nichols, Max Ryan, Michael McGrady, Peter Stormare and Danny Glover. 

James Agnew and Sean Keller penned the script.

It’s available on demand June 10 and in theaters July 11 via RLJ/Image Entertainment.

First Trailer Released for Trejo’s “Bad Asses” Film

The 69-year-old Mexican American actor known for his tough guy characters is reprising his role in Bad Ass in the sequel Bad Asses.

The first trailer sees Trejo’s character, old street hero Frank Vega, dodging bullets and blowing up a helicopter as he attempts to bring down a drug lord.

Bad Asses picks up where the first film left off… Frank opens a community center where he coaches young boxers. When his prized student is found dead, he finds himself in one life-threatening predicament after another. But this time, he’s bringing in backup, Bernie Pope (Danny Glover).

Craig Moss returns as the film’s director, while Andrew Divoff has been cast as the main villain.

Other cast members include Jacqueline Obradors, Charlie Carver and Jonathan Lipnicki.

The sequel is set for a DVD release sometime in 2014.

Cabezas’ Cast for “Tokarev” Finalized

Paco Cabezas has rounded out the cast for his American film debut…

Hannibal Classics has set Danny Glover, Peter Stomare, Aubrey Peebles, Patrice Cols and Max Fowler to join Nicolas Cage in the action thriller Tokarev, the 37-year-old Spanish filmmaker’s first American film.

In Tokarev, Cage portrays a reformed criminal whose daughter is kidnapped by the Russian mob. To find her, he must leave his respectable life behind, round up his old crew and seek his own brand of justice.

Image Entertainment has acquired North American distribution rights for the film.

“We couldn’t be happier with our cast, a combination of audience favorites and fresh young talent. Danny and Peter are recognized and loved all over the world. And in Max Fowler, Aubrey Peeples and Patrice Cols we feel we have found the stars of tomorrow.”

Cabezas’ previous credits include the Spanish-language films Aparecido and Carne de neón.
