Lopez Partnering with nuvoTV to Develop Latino-Themed Content

It’s a nuvo day for Jennifer Lopez…

The 43-year-old Puerto Rican multi-hyphenate is partnering with nuvoTV to develop new programming behind the scenes and on camera with the English-language cable channel targeting Latinos.

Jennifer Lopez

The former American Idol judge will also be involved in marketing strategies at nuvoTV, where she’s a part owner.

The channel was launched in 2004, and last year changed its name from Si TV to nuvoTV.

“I teamed up with them because I felt that there’s a real, great opportunity to do something that has not yet been done,” Lopez told The Hollywood Reporter. “Thinking about myself growing up as a Puerto Rican girl in the Bronx, speaking English as my first language, and knowing that there was really nothing on TV for me! I remember very clearly, like on Sesame Street, Luis and Maria, the Spanish couple, or going to movies and loving West Side Story and that being a huge influence on my life to become an artist because there were Puerto Ricans in it.”

As part of the deal, Lopez—one of the world’s most powerful women—aims to introduce high-level, HBO-style films to the channel as well as scripted and unscripted series. In the works: a backstage docu-series on her upcoming European concert tour with co-headliner Enrique Iglesias, slated to air in early 2013. A reality show about Lopez’s backup dancers (including her beau, Casper Smart) is being considered.

Lopez’s goal: to create content similar to that found on BET, where the quality of the programming goes well-beyond the core audience.

“It’s not an easy sell to go sell a Latino story to a network about a whole Latino family … even in the movies,” she said. “And at the end of the day, that’s content that we’re going to be looking for. There is a place now to go for that. … We’re dedicated to improving the content that’s there, making it even better and, at the same time, creating new content that’s gonna be entertaining.”

Lopez’s work with nuvoTV isn’t expected to affect her deals with other channels; earlier this year, she sold an English-language version of her Univision competition series Q’Viva!, The Chosen to Fox, where it aired earlier this year.

Last month ABC Family ordered a pilot for a potential new series Lopez is executive producing currently called The Fosters, a one-hour drama revolving around a multi-ethnic family mix of foster and biological kids being raised by two moms.

“I still have a lot of other shows that I’m developing with other networks, ABC, Fox … that’s not gonna stop,” she noted. “I’m gonna continue to be producing. I just might put them all on nuvo now.”

Anthony to Serve as “The X Factor” Celebrity Mentor

There’s no denying Marc Anthony has the X factor… And, now he’ll be helping discover other singers with that same je ne sais quoi…

The 43-year-old Puerto Rican singer has reportedly signed on to serve as a celebrity mentor during The X Factors upcoming season, according to E! News.

Marc Anthony

Anthony, who will form part of judge Simon Cowell‘s team, will dish out advice and guidance to the “group” contestants on the Fox reality singing competition.

“Marc and Simon have known each other for a long time, and Marc’s a huge worldwide-selling artist, so when The X Factor decided to film in Miami, it was perfect,” a source tells E! News. “Marc really likes the idea of spotting new and young talent and he has strong opinions, so being a guest mentor with Simon and his category is perfect.”

Fox, however, has yet to confirm Anthony’s casting. He previously sought out Latin talent on the show he created with ex-wife Jennifer Lopez, Q’VIVA! The Chosen, which was broadcast on Fox.

The news of Anthony’s involvement comes just days after reports that Justin Bieber will also be serving as a celebrity mentor on the show.

The second season of The X Factor premieres next Wednesday, September 12 at 8:00 pm ET.

Rousseff: The Top Latina on Forbes’ Most Powerful Women List

Following her dramatic rise to the top of the heap last year, Dilma Rousseff is holding steady as la Latina mas poderosa en el mundo

The 64-year-old Brazilian president—the first woman to hold that office—has been named to Forbes magazine’s list of the most powerful women in the world.

Dilma Rousseff

Rousseff, the leader of one of the world’s largest economies, ranks at No. 3 on the list behind Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The three women occupy the exact same position they held on last year’s list.

In selecting her as one of the most powerful women, Forbes highlighted Rousseff’s ambitious work at the mid-point of her first term as president, launching two aggressive programs meant to reverse the still-strong but shrinking national GDP.

Brasil Sem Miséria is a Great Society-type program aimed at ridding dire poverty in Brazil and increasing access to education, medical care and sanitation services to those in need by 2014. A second initiative centers on business growth and innovation, including protectionist tariffs on imports, subsidies for exports and incentivizing micro and small businesses.

“What I want my legacy to be is this country to be increasing middle class, to be highly competitive and highly educated,” Rousseff told Forbes.

A June poll put Rousseff’s approval rating at 77%, and she is predicted to win a second four-year term in 2014.

Further down the list, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner has moved up a spot from last year’s list to occupy the No. 16 position.

Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner

The 59-year-old Argentine president was re-elected to a second term in a landslide election last year. She caused quite a stir this summer when she approved ads for Argentina’s Olympic team that disputed British sovereignty over the Falkland Islands. Tensions between the Olympic host nation and Argentina have been boiling over since Fernandez renewed her country’s claim to the islands on June 13th, the 30th anniversary of the Falklands War.

Under her administration the economy sharply grew—the GDP is up 37% since 2007 at $725—pension and child welfare benefits increased and the poverty rate has fallen steadily.

Meanwhile, Jennifer Lopezthe “world’s most powerful celebrity”—ranks as the most powerful Latina superstar on this year’s list.

Jennifer Lopez

The 43-year-old Puerto Rican multi-hyphenate, who recently decided to walk away from her cushy American Idol gig, ranks at No. 38 in her debut listing on this Forbes list.

Lopez earned approximately $52 million last year with projects in a number of diverse fields that go beyond singing and acting, including successful fragrance and clothing lines and several lucrative endorsement deals.

She’s even produced and starred in her own Latin talent competition show Q’Viva! and she’s developing an hour-long drama for ABC Family. And, this summer she kicked off her first international music tour, which she plans to release as a 3D concert film.

“I’m a little bit tired now, I’m not going to lie,” Lopez admitted to Forbes.

“J.Lo and her team have blocked out more than a month of their schedules, beginning May 4, to start intense rehearsals, each day, at a sound stage in the Los Angeles area,” the source told CeleBuzz.

Jennifer Lopez & Marc Anthony

“It’s a very unique, modern way, and sexy way, to package these traditional talents,” Anthony told Billboard. “I’m really, really looking forward to the live show.”

Q’Viva! The Chosen, currently airing on Univision and Fox, features the pair as traveling across the globe to find the best undiscovered Latin talent. Both Anthony and Lopez are executive producers of the show, along with American Idol creator Simon Fuller and choreographer Jamie King.

Q'Viva: The Chosen

Besides Lopez and Anthony, 52 performers from around the world will perform as part of the Q’Viva! concert to be held at Mandalay Bay Events Center on May 26. It’ll serve as the culmination of the TV show’s search to find acts for what Anthony calls “the world’s most amazing Latin spectacular ever.”

Anthony said one of the things that most impressed him was how the artists bonded despite differences in ethnicity and where they came from.

“I thought that bringing all of these artists together in one house would have been a little more dynamic by way of conflict,” the salsa singer said. “That’s one thing that absolutely blew me away, the way they became one nation. And that’s how they would put it – ‘We’re one nation, all of us.'”

Anthony believes the show, in its inaugural season, will be back.

“Absolutely. We’re in the middle of setting it up now,” he said. “This is a passion project. … I’m looking forward to doing it again. It’s bigger than all of us. It’s a movement.”
