Carlos Vives Launching “El Mundo Perdido de Cumbiana” Documentary in Partnership with Grammy Museum

Carlos Vives is celebrating Colombia’s indigenous roots in music in a special way…

The 59-year-old Colombian singer-songwriter is launching a special documentary, El Mundo Perdido de Cumbiana, this Friday, August 21 on the Grammy Museum’s digital museum.

Carlos Vives

In May, Vives released his 14th studio album, Cumbiana, which married Colombia’s past with the future. The album shed light on the indigenous roots of Colombian music in a 10-set production that includes collaborations with Jessie Reyez, Alejandro Sanz, Ruben Blades and others.

Vives decided to bring his extensive research and musical exploration to the masses via the documentary, which is directed by Carlos Felipe Montoya and produced by Isabel Cristina Vasquez from Mestiza Films.

Vives spotlights the history of the amphibian universe to better understand the origins of cumbia and vallenato music, the ancestral spirits that inspired his latest production, and the environmental challenges the Magdalena River ecosystem is facing.

“I discovered a lost world. That’s the truth,” Vives previously told Billboard.

“We’ve always spoken about our African heritage in music. We’ve always thought that the most uplifting elements of our music came from Africa or from European rhythms like polka. But it turns out it comes from Andean or indigenous music. This album highlights the joy of the fusion of African, European, and indigenous music.”

El Mundo Perdido de Cumbiana, which also elaborates on the creative process of Cumbiana, will be available at 1:00 pm PT on Friday, August 21 at the Grammy Museum website for 72 hours only.

Following the screening, Vives will attend an exclusive conversation with NPR Alt Latino’s Felix Contreras to further discuss the documentary.

Ozuna Releases “Caramelo” Remix, Featuring Karol G & Myke Towers

Ozuna is sweetening things up…

Two months after releasing “Caramelo,” the 28-year-old Puerto Rican reggaeton and Latin trap singer has released a remix of the track featuring Karol G and Myke Towers.

Ozuna, Karol G & Myke Towers

“Caramelo,” one of this year’s Billboard Latin summer songs, is a hip-shaking and head-bobbing reggaeton single that tells the story of two people who have undeniable chemistry.

“I tried you again, your mouth does not lose its candy flavor / we let ourselves go, you are my bandit and I am your bandit,” the catchy chorus says.

Karol G kicks off the remix flaunting her sugary high vocals. In her verse, the “Tusa” singer croons about being a girl who’s like no other and can do all the things her man likes to do. Towers adds his distinct flow to the track, singing about a ride-or-die girl who he’s crazy about.

Similar to the original music video, the remix features all three artists in different Candyland-inspired settings as models enjoy sweet treats such as ice cream, bubble gum, lollipops, chocolate and more.

On the Billboard charts, “Caramelo” captured his first top 10 debut of 2020, and his second new top 10 of the year overall, arriving at No. 7 on the Hot Latin Songs chart dated June 27. The song hit No. 1 on the Latin Airplay chart dated August 15, nabbing his 20th leader on the list, which launched in 1994.

The Hot 100 blends all-genre U.S. streaming, radio airplay and sales data.

“WAP” debuts at No. 1 on both the Streaming Songs and Digital Song Sales charts, with 93 million U.S. streams and 125,000 downloads sold in the week ending August 13, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data. It also drew 11.6 million radio airplay audience impressions in the week ending August 16.

Consumers could pre-order cassette, CD and vinyl singles (priced at $5-$15), with each purchase including a digital download; the download (the sale of which contributed to the latest tracking week) was made available and fulfilled to purchasers August 7, with physical versions due to arrive at a later date.

“WAP” debuts with the most weekly streams for a song in 2020, besting the 77.2 million for Roddy Ricch‘s “The Box” (January 25).

Meanwhile, the sales sum for “WAP” is the highest in a single week since Taylor Swift‘s “Me!,” featuring Brendon Urie, bounded in with 193,000 on the chart dated May 11, 2019.

Here’s a look at Cardi B’s four Hot 100 No. 1s:

Title, Weeks at No. 1, Date Reached No. 1

“WAP” concurrently soars in at No. 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts, which use the same multi-metric methodology as the Hot 100.

Banda MS Releases New Album “El Trabajo Es La Suerte”

Banda MS is feeling lucky

The Mexican band, whose full name is Banda MS de Sergio Lizárraga, has released their new 18-track album El Trabajo Es La Suerte.

Banda-MS

It’s the band’s first album since Con Todas Las Fuerzas, which was released two years ago.

Staying true to their ranchera-tinged ballads and their showstopper bandasound, Banda MS recruited songwriters like Eden Muñoz, Espinoza Paz, Omar Tarazon, Joss Favela and Jhonny Zazueta to pen songs for the well-rounded album.

During aninterview with Billboard in May, Banda MS’ lead singers Alan Ramírez and Oswaldo Silvas shared details about the album.

“We had 10 songs for the album and we thought, ok, these are enough,” Ramírez said. “But then we started getting other songs and had like 20 in total and so we had to start selecting which ones we really wanted on there, the best ones and the ones we like the most.”
