Demi Lovato to Star in Stephanie Laing’s Feature Drama “Tow”

Demi Lovato is towing the line…

The 31-year-old half-Mexican American Grammy-nominated singer and actress will star opposite Rose Byrne and Dominic Sessa in Stephanie Laing’s feature Tow.

Demi LovatoThe project will see Lovato take on her first dramatic role in a feature.

Tow will see Golden Globe and Emmy nominee Byrne portray the true story of Amanda Ogle, an unhoused Seattle woman who fought her way out of tow-company hell to reclaim her life and the car that held it all together after receiving a tow bill for $21,634. Ogle also serves as an executive producer on the film.

Laing previously described Ogle as “a true champion” and her story as one of “tenacity and perseverance”.

The original screenplay comes from Jonathan Keasey, Brant Boivi, and Annie Weisman.

Lovato has sold more than 24 million records in the U.S. alone.

She’s best known on screen for roles in comedy series and films including Camp Rock, Princess Protection Program, Glee and the Netflix film Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga.

Colman Domingo to Star as Joe Jackson in the Michael Jackson Biopic “Michael”

Colman Domingo has landed a father of a role…

The 54-year-old Belizean-Guatemalan American actor, who recently earned his first-ever Oscars nomination, has landed the role of Jackson family patriarch Joe Jackson in Lionsgate and Universal Pictures International’s Michael Jackson biopic Michael.

Colman DomingoJoe Jackson was known for his hard-driving management and often controversial parenting of the Jackson 5. Domingo joins Michael Jackson’s real-life nephew Jaafar Jackson, who is playing his King of Pop uncle in the Antoine Fuqua-directed film from Oscar-winning producer Graham King and his GK Films. Three-time Oscar nominee John Logan wrote the screenplay.

“Few actors present themselves with Colman’s screen presence and force of will,” said King. “We’re so fortunate to have an actor with his undeniable talent portraying Joe Jackson on screen. We couldn’t be more excited to have him join us on this journey.”

Fuqua added, “Colman has such incredible range – he puts in the work to deeply inhabit his characters and understand their true essence and motivation. I’m grateful to be working with an actor with his passion and ability to portray the many sides of Joe Jackson: a husband, a father and a manager.”

Domingo said, “I’m excited to be a part of a film that explores both the complicated soul of the legendary Michael Jackson as well as his impact on music and culture as a global icon. Not only am I fortunate to have a rich, complex and flawed character to portray in Joe Jackson, but I also have a front row seat for Jaafar’s incredible transformation. After seeing him in rehearsal, my mind was blown. There is something divine about the way that Jaafar is channeling his late uncle. His talent and embodiment of Michael’s essence is simply on another level.”

Domingo’s turn in Rustin also earned him BAFTA, SAG Award and Golden Globes nominations. He’s also an Emmy winner for his guest role on HBO’s Euphoria and his recent work includes in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Zola, the newly conceived musical film version The Color Purple, as well as his just-completed starring role on Fear the Walking Dead.

Upcoming for the actor is Ethan Coen’s movie Drive-Away Dolls opposite Margaret Qualley, Geraldine Viswanathan, Beanie Feldstein, Pedro Pascal, Bill Camp and Matt Damon, which arrives on February 23.

Later this year, he will be seen starring in the feature film Sing, Sing and in The Madness, a new Netflix limited series.

Michael will be produced by King and the co-executors of the Michael Jackson estate, John Branca and John McClain. It is getting an overseas release from Universal Pictures International (sans Japan, which Lionsgate is handling). The film bows day-and-date around the world on April 18, 2025.

America Ferrera Earns First Career Oscar Nomination for “Barbie” Performance

America Ferrera is celebrating a special first…

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed the nominees for the 96th Academy Awards, with the 39-year-old Honduran American actress earning her first-ever nod.

Ferrara is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Gloria, a Mattel employee who befriends Barbie in Barbie.

Ferrera’s nomination came as a surprise to some. Despite an acclaimed performance in the film, She wasn’t nominated for a Golden Globe or a SAG Award in the category. She did, however, receive a Critics Choice Award nomination and received the See Her Award at the Critics Choice Awards.

In Barbie, Ferrera delivers a monologue about the challenging expectations of being a woman, which was widely shared on social media — the hashtags #barbiemonologue and #barbiespeech each garnering more than 10 million views on TikTok, with many recreating the powerful speech.

But Ferrera isn’t the only Latinx artist nominated…

Colman Domingo has received his first Oscar nod.

The 54-year-old Belizean-Guatemalan American actor earned the nomination in the Best Actor in a Leading Role category for playing the title character in Rustin, Netflix’s biopic about the gay Black civil rights leader Bayard Rustin, an adviser to Martin Luther King Jr. and the architect of the 1963 March on Washington.

Domingo is only the second openly gay man to earn an Oscar nomination for playing a gay character, following the 1999 nomination of Ian McKellen for his leading role in Gods and Monsters.

J.A. Bayona has earned his first Oscar nod.

The 48-year-old Spanish filmmaker earned a nod for Best International Feature Film for Spain’s Society of the Snow.

Other Hispanic nominees include Pablo Berger, Ibon Cormenzana, Ignasi Estapé and Sandra Tapia Díaz in the Best Animated Feature Film category for Robot Dreams; Rodrigo Prieto for Best Cinematography for Killers of the Flower Moon; and Ana López-Puigcerver, David Martí and Montse Ribé for Best Makeup and Hairstyling for Society of the Snow.

Oppenheimer received the most nominations for the 2024 Oscars,with 13 nods.

Jimmy Kimmel will host the 2024 Oscars, which will be held March 10 at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood.

For the third consecutive year, the 31-year-old Mexican American actress/singer has been nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award.

Selena GomezGomez is nominated once again for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series for her role in Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, but the Golden Globe nominee was passed over for a nod for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in aComedy Series.

Colman Domingo has earned two SAG Award nods.

The 54-year-old Belizean-Guatemalan American actor is nominated in the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for his performance in Netflix’s Rustin.

Domingo is also nominated alongside his The Color Purple cast mates in the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. He previously earned a nod in the same category back in 2020 for his being part of the cast of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

John Ortiz has earned his first-ever SAG Awards nomination.

The 55-year-old Puerto Rican actor and his American Fiction cast mates are up for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

Previously nominated as part of the cast of HBO’s Game of Thrones, the 48-year-old Chilean actor is nominated in the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series and Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series for her performance in HBO’sThe Last of Us.

Comedy and drama performances are combined in the SAG film awards, but are handled separately in their television awards.

On the film side, the largest ensemble among the nominees is The Color Purple, with 12 actors including such music stars as Halle Bailey, Fantasia Barrino, Jon Batiste, Ciara and H.E.R.

The 30th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, produced by SAG-AFTRA and Silent House Productions, will stream live on Netflix on Saturday, February24, at 8:00 pm ET/5:00 pm PT from the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles. This will mark the show’s live debut on Netflix. Last year’s ceremony was broadcast on Netflix’s YouTube page.

The awards are voted on by SAG-AFTRA’s membership of 119,515 eligible voters, the largest voting body on the awards circuit. Final voting opens on Wednesday, January 17, and closes at noon PT on Friday, February 23.

Barbra Streisand will receive the 2024 SAG Lifetime Achievement Award. She is the 59th recipient of the tribute; she follows Sally Field, who received it during the 2023 telecast.

The full lineup of presenters for Sunday’s Golden Globes is set, with the 39-year-old Honduran American award-winning actress among the artists set to hand out trophies at the Beverly Hilton.

Selena Gomez Hints at Retiring from Music

Selena Gomez may be retiring from music in the near future…

The 31-year-old Mexican American singer/actress shared on the on the latest episode of SmartLess, the podcast hosted by Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes, that she’d like to focus on only one aspect of her career.

Selena Gomez“I started having a lot of fun with music and then touring was really fun. But I was doing my TV show at the same time [Wizards of Waverly Place] and I just found it really fun so I just kept going but the older I get, the more I’m kind of like, I would like to find something to just settle on,” she explained.

The Only Murders in the Building actress added that she’d like to focus on her acting career, sharing, “I do feel like I have one more album in me but I would probably choose acting.”

Gomez recalled that she got into singing after snagging the lead role on her Disney Channel series Wizards of Waverly Place.

“Disney is, it’s safe to say, a machine and, in a way, forcefully require that I know how to sing so I could sing the theme song [of a show]. They know how to package someone and make it a whole triple threat thing,” she said.

After she recorded the theme song for Wizards of Waverly Place, Disney asked if Gomez would like to record an album, which she “thought it would be fun.”

She added, “I wanted to be an actress, I never really intended on being a singer full-time but apparently that hobby turned into something else.”

Gomez’s acting career is skyrocketing even more lately, as her role in Hulu’s Only Murders has snagged her two Golden Globes nominations in 2023 and 2024 for best performance by an actress in a television series – musical or comedy.

The 62-year-old Mexican American stand-up comedian and actor appears on the first list of presenters for Sunday’s 81st Golden Globe Awards.

Jo Koy is hosting the Golden Globes, which will honor the year’s best in motion pictures and television. The ceremony will air beginning at 8:00 pm ET/5 p.m. PT live on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.

More presenters will be announced.

Among this year’s Golden Globe nominees in 26 categories, 2023’s box office champ Barbie from Warner Bros leads all films with nine, followed by Universal’s Oppenheimer with eight and Apple’s Killers of the Flower Moon and Searchlight’s Poor Things with seven apiece. In the TV races, HBO’s final go-round with Succession has nine noms, the most-ever for a series, scoring mentions in all categories in which it was eligible.

This year’s Globes — it’s first time back on CBS since 1982 — include two new awards categories: Cinematic and Box Office Achievement in Motion Pictures and Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television.

Longtime Globes producer Dick Clark Productions is planning, hosting and producing this year’s awards after the Globes’ assets, rights and properties were acquired by Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association back in June.

The nominations for the 81st annual Golden Globe Awards have been revealed, with the 54-year-old Belizean-Guatemalan American actor and social justice activist earning his first-ever Golden Globe nod.

Colman DomingoDomingo earned a nod for Best Performance By A Male Actor In A Motion Picture – Drama for his acclaimed performance in Netflix’s Rustin.

The film is based on the true story of Bayard Rustin, advisor to Martin Luther King Jr., who dedicated his life to the quest for racial equality, human rights and worldwide democracy. However, as an openly gay Black man, he was all but erased from the civil rights movement he helped build.

J.A. Bayona is also a first time Golden Globes nominee…

The 48-year-old Spanish film director is nominated in the Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language for directing and writing the Spanish-language survival thriller film La sociedad de la nieve (Society of Snow), an adaptation of Pablo Vierci‘s book of the same name about the Uruguayan 1972 Andes flight disaster.

Society of Snow has earned 13 Goya Awards nominations, including Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for Bayona.

Pedro Pascal has also earned a first Golden Globes nod.

The 48-year-old Chilean actor is nominated in the Best Performance By A Male Actor In A Television Series – Drama category for his acclaimed performance in HBO’s The Last of Us.

He’s currently nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award and Critics’ Choice Award for his work in The Last of Us. He has already claimed two MTV Movie & TV Awards (for Best Hero and Best Duo) for his performance in the hit TV series.

Selena Gomez has earned her second consecutive Golden Globe nomination in the Best Performance By A Female Actor In A Television Series – Musical Or Comedy category.

The 31-year-old Mexican American actress/singer earned the nod for her performance in Hulu’s Only Murders In The Building.

The 2024 Golden Globe Awards ceremony will take place January 7, 2024 at the Beverly Hilton and air live on CBS and Paramount+, after the network acquired rights following longtime home NBC not renewing its deal.

Last year, the Globes Globes returned to broadcast television after a forced hiatus due to issues around membership that eventually led to the wind-down of organizer the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The Globes are now owned by longtime Globes producer Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge.

Among the changes, in addition to growing and diversifying its voter base, the Globes added new categories this year: Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Best Stand-Up Comedian on Television.

Diego Luna & Gael García Bernal to Executive Produce “The Boys” Offshoot, “The Boys: Mexico”

Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal are bringing the boys south of the border…

The 43-year-old Mexican actor, director and producer and the 44-year-old Mexican Golden Globe-winning actor and producer will executive produce and possibly appear in acting roles in The Boys: Mexico, a new series offshoot of The Boys from Blue Beetle writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer.

Gael García Bernal & Diego LunaDetails regarding the premise of the series are being kept under wraps.

A search is currently underway for a co-showrunner to join creator, writer and executive producer Dunnet-Alcocer, who is now working on the script.

The team behind The Boys: Mexico, which will be shot in the Latin American country, is working on budgets for the new series and they have yet to begin casting, sources said.

The Mexico-set offshoot comes from the main creative auspices behind the other series in The Boys franchise, the mothership’s developer Eric Kripke and his Kripke Enterprises, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s Point Grey Pictures, Neil H. Moritz’s Original Film, Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios. Loreli Alba is expected to oversee for Point Grey.

The Boys, based on the New York Times best-selling comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, shares a fun and irreverent take on what happens when superheroes—who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians, and as revered as gods—abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. Intent on stopping the corrupt superheroes, The Boys, a group of vigilantes, continue their heroic quest to expose the truth about The Seven and Vought—the multibillion-dollar conglomerate that manages the superheroes and covers up their dirty secrets. It’s the seemingly powerless against the super-powerful.

Following the breakout success of The Boys, which is headed to Season 4, two spinoff series were released in 2023: the animated The Boys Presents: Diabolical, which premiered in March, and the college-set spinoff Gen V, which recently concluded its first season and has been renewed for Season 2.

The Boys: Mexico is the latest project hailing from rising star Dunnet-Alcocer, who penned the screenplay for the Warner Bros. Pictures/DC Studios superhero feature film, Blue Beetle. Most recently, he wrote the screenplay for Sony’s El Muerto from director Jonás Cuarón. The Queretaro, Mexico native also wrote and executive produced Miss Bala in 2019. Additionally, Dunnet-Alcocer is attached as screenwriter of the Universal Pictures’ reimagination of Scarface.

Luna and García Bernal are veteran actors whose careers exploded following their collaboration in the hit 2001 Spanish-language feature Y Tu Mamá También directed by Alfonso Cuarón. They have reunited multiple times since then including in Rudo y Cursi (2008) and Casa de Mi Padre (2012).

Most recently Luna joined the Star Wars universe in the Disney+ TV series Andor, a prequel to Star Wars: Rogue One.

García Bernal most recently starred in the Amazon bio-drama Cassandro portraying the titular gay wrestler born Saúl Armendáriz.

The longtime friends and collaborators became producing partners in 2018 under their La Corriente del Golfo banner. Recent projects they produced include the aforementioned Cassandro and the series Pan y Circo hosted by Luna, both for Amazon.

The 22-year-old half-Colombian American Golden Globe-winning starlet’s The Hunger Games” prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes emerged victorious in a busy box office weekend.

Rachel Zegler, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,The Lionsgate film, which brings audiences back to the dystopia of Panem for the first time in nearly a decade, collected $44 million from 3,776 North American theaters and $98 million globally in its first weekend of release.

While initial ticket sales didn’t recapture the spark of the original franchise, which propelled Jennifer Lawrence to global stardom and inspired three sequels, they were enough to win the weekend over three fellow newcomers, Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s threequel Trolls Band Together, Sony’s gory thriller Thanksgiving and director Taika Waititi’s sports comedy Next Goal Wins.

Although The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes opened significantly lower than its predecessors — each of the four Hunger Games installments launched to at least $100 million at the domestic box office — analysts believe the film is well positioned in its theatrical run. It cost $100 million to produce, more than the first Hunger Games but substantially less than the three sequels (with the final 2015 adventure costing $160 million).

“This is a very good opening for an action-adventure prequel,” says David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research. “On average, prequels start with approximately half of the previous film’s opening, and this weekend’s figure is close to that.”

Zegler and The Gilded Age actor Tom Blyth star in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, based on the 2020 novel by author Suzanne Collins. It’s a standalone film in the $3 billion Hunger Games franchise, which takes place six decades before Katniss Everdeen bravely volunteered as tribute.

The story centers on a young Coriolanus Snow, who later becomes the tyrannical president of the dystopian Panem, as well as District 12 tribute, Lucy Gray Baird, whom he mentors in the 10th annual Hunger Games. Reviews have been mixed, with 60% on Rotten Tomatoes and a “B+” CinemaScore. Audiences were mostly young women; 65% were female and 73% were between the ages of 18-34.

It likely benefitted from a late-breaking boost in publicity (SAG-AFTRA granted the film an interim agreement days before the strike ended on November 9), which allowed the cast — including Viola Davis, Peter Dinklage and Euphoria star Hunter Schafer — the opportunity to promote the film before it arrived in theaters.
