Los Lobos to Release “Kiko (30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)” on Record Store Day

Los Lobos will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of their classic album with a special Record Store Day release.

Among the more than 170 exclusive titles for the annual Black Friday event this fall, the Mexican American rock band, comprised of David Hidalgo, Louie Pérez, Cesar Rosas, Conrad Lozano and Steve Berlin, will release a deluxe edition of Kiko on Record Store Day.

Los LobosKiko (30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition), the long original album, has been spread across two LPs for better fidelity, with a third disc of never-before-released demos.

Released in 1992, Kiko was the sixth studio album from Los Lobos.

With the exception of La Bamba‘s 2 million units sold, Kiko sold more units (vinyl, CDs, cassettes) than any other album in their 46-year career of original songs. Roughly 450,000 units were sold worldwide.

A year after the album’s release, Los Lobos performed a version of the song “Kiko and the Lavender Moon,” as “Elmo and the Lavender Moon,” on the PBS series Sesame Street.

This year’s Record Store Day will take place on Friday, November 24, 2023.

The full list of titles can be found on the RSD website here.

Kali Uchis’ “Sin Miedo (Del Amor y Otros Demonios)” Returns to No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Pop Albums Chart

Kali Uchis is back on top…

More than a year after scoring her first No. 1 on a Billboard albums chart with her first Spanish-language set Sin Miedo (Del Amor y Otros Demonios), the 27-year-old Colombian American singer’s album returns to No. 1 on the Latin Pop Albums chart.

Kali UchisThe album concurrently debuts in the top 10 on the Vinyl Albums chart.

Sin Miedo was issued on clear vinyl for Record Store Day’s June 18 drop via EMI/Interscope/IGA, which prompts the album’s 6-1 jump on Latin Pop Albums with 9,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending June 23, up 201%.

Of that unit total, album sales comprise 6,000 (up 6,857%), with nearly all of that figure in vinyl sales. Concurrently, the album debuts at No. 9 on the Vinyl Albums chart.

It’s Uchis’ second top 10 on Vinyl Albums. She captured her first entry — and first top 10 — with the English-language effort Isolation (No. 10 high, 2018).

Notably, Sin Miedo becomes the sixth Spanish-language album to secure a spot in the top 10 on the 25-deep tally Vinyl Albums tally since its inception in 2011.

Here’s the leaderboard:

Title, Artist, Peak Position, Peak Date
Ones, Selena, No. 1, July 8, 2020
Anniversary Trilogy, Bad Bunny, No. 1, Jan. 15, 2022
Buena Vista Social Club, Buena Vista Social Club, No. 10, Oct. 16, 2021 (debut)
El Último Tour del Mundo, Bad Bunny, No. 4, April 2022 (debut)
Motomami, Rosalía, No. 7, May 28, 2022 (debut)
Sin Miedo (Del Amor y Otros Demonios), Kali Uchis, No. 9, July 2, 2022

In addition, one more Spanish-language album has reached the Vinyl Albums chart (but didn’t hit the top 10) — Bad Bunny’s X 100PRE (No. 19 peak on March 20, 2021).

On Latin Pop Albums, Sin Miedo returns to No. 1 for the first time since the October 16, 2021-dated chart. In total, the set has spent 10 nonconsecutive weeks atop the list.

Out of its 9,000-unit sum, 6,000 stem from album sales (effectively all in vinyl sales). Streaming makes up most of the remaining sum, with 3,000 from that sector, equal to 4.1 million on-demand official streams for the album’s songs.

The album also rejoins the top 10 on Top Latin Albums, flying 30-4. It returns to the top 10 for the first time since the chart dated October 16, 2021, when it ranked at No. 7. Sin Miedo peaked at No. 3 for four nonconsecutive weeks that year — its highest ranking in its 84-week charting history (and counting). As in Latin Pop Albums, the set takes home the Greatest Gainer honors there.

Over on the all-genre Billboard 200, Sin Miedo re-enters at No. 122, its highest ranking in over a year.

Mariah Carey Releases First-Ever Vinyl of Her #1s Collection for Record Store Day

It’s a Firsts first for Mariah Carey this Record Store Day

The 52-year-old half-Venezuelan American Grammy-winning singer came out with a special vinyl release during this year’s Record Store Day for its 2022 event on Wednesday (Feb. 16).

Mariah CareyCarey – who remains the best-selling female artist of all time, released her 1998 greatest-hits collection #1s  on vinyl for the very first time.

Among the other releases for Record Store Day’s first iteration since 2019 are a 7-inch of Taylor Swift’s Folklore bonus track “The Lakes” with its orchestral version as the B-side while also being included on charity benefit album Portraits of Her, which celebrates female artists and music industry professionals while raising money for nonprofit We Are Moving the Needle.

Prince’s 1995 LP The Gold Experience also received a special pressing.

“For the past few years, our RSD Drops dates altered the focus of what we did—instead of being one part of what the Day was, the List became the entire focus,” said Record Store Day co-founder Carrie Colliton in a statement. “A way to get much-needed revenue and stock — and great music — into stores and then to customers’ collections. We specifically didn’t call those days Record Store Day, because they weren’t. They were very different, very necessarily so.”

She continued: “Now, we think stores have learned and adapted and are ready to bring back elements of a ‘traditional’ Record Store Day: bands and beer and fun and people and whatever parts of the party they like, in ways that make them, and their customers, comfortable. We also feel strongly that it’s important to focus on those stores themselves, and celebrate what they do year-round, in their communities.”

Record Store Day 2021 to Include Vinyl Release of Celia Cruz & Willie Colón’s “Celia Y Willie”

Celia Cruz’s lasting presence will be felt over the summer…

Record Store Day 2021 is planning two-day “drops” on June 12 and July 17 of exclusive titles, including music by the late Cuban singer.

Celia Cruz x Willie Colon, Celia y Willie

Craft Recordings has announced 12 exclusive vinyl releases for RSD, including a 40th-anniversary reissue of Celia Cruz and Willie Colón’s Celia Y Willie.

RSD typically occurs on a Saturday in the spring at various independent record stores, drawing customers with the promise of unique and limited-edition albums released exclusively to indie stores for the holiday.

But the festivities can’t quite bounce back to the way things were with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. With small businesses slowly opening back up, the RSD website has created an organized list of 450 titles — 50 more than usual — for music lovers to use as a shopping guide at select indie music retailers. Stores will allow for in-store shopping with either normal/reduced foot traffic or by appointment, curbside pickup, local delivery and/or online shopping depending on the location, which can be checked here.

RSD’s first releases include Lady Gaga‘s Chromatica on exclusive yellow vinyl; Amy Winehouse‘s Remixes as its own LP collection for the first time; Prince‘s The Truth as a first-time LP release and first-time independent release on purple vinyl; Tom Petty‘s Angel Dream reimagined on LP for the 25th anniversary of the She’s The One soundtrack; and Ariana Grande‘s k bye for now (swt live) on double-CD and as a triple-LP. This marks the first time the live-album component of Grande’s 2019 Sweetener Tour is being released in physical form after the pop star released the LP digitally on December 23, 2019.

Spreading RSD over two days in two different months in

the summer gives vinyl pressing plants and distribution companies ample time to produce the titles and provides indie stores more flexibility to prepare budgets and place orders so customers can shop for the records they’re looking for on both days as opposed to one massive release day.

RSD organizers were forced to postpone its 2020 edition due to COVID. Last year’s three-part drop (staged on August 29, September 26 and October 24) helped generate 1.95 million in CD and vinyl album sales at indie stores in the U.S. — with 1.41 million of that in vinyl album sales, according to MRC Data.

Alejandro Escovedo Earns First Entry on a Billboard Latin Chart with “La Cruzada”

Alejandro Escovedo is celebrating a special first…

The 69-year-old Mexican American rock musician has notched his first entry on any Billboard Latin chart as La Cruzada, with Don Antonio, arrives at No. 8 on the Latin Pop Albums chart (dated November 7) with 1,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending October 29, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data.

La Cruzada is the Spanish version of Escovedo’s 2018 album The Crossing, with Don Antonio, which bowed at No. 6 on the Heatseekers Albums chart and at No. 28 on the Rock Albums Sales charts in September 2018.

Alejandro is a member of the storied Escovedo music family, which includes his brothers Pete and Coke, and niece Sheila E.

“It’s been a while since I was on the charts,” Escovedo tells Billboard from his home in Austin, Texas. “To have this record on the chart is very rewarding, such a beautiful thing for me. It seems my whole lifetime has led to this record. This is kind of the epitome of what I always wanted to do and express. I love the concept of an album, I love the storytelling of an album, this one gave me an opportunity to fully express in a way that I don’t think I had in previous records.”

Escovedo’s The Crossing, with Italian band Don Antonio -fronted by multi-instrumentalist Antonio Garmantieri, was co-written with Garmantieri and recorded in Emilia-Romagna, Italy. Its Spanish version, La Cruzada, was released via Yep Roc/Redeye and pressed on red, white and green striped double vinyl exclusively for Record Store Day.

Two years after the release of its original English version, La Cruzada secures a spot on the Latin charts. “I thought the message had to be heard,” Escovedo adds. “My father was born in Saucillo, Mexico and crossed the border in 1907 when he was 12. I come from a musical family, my brother Pete and Coke Escovedo played for Santana, and Sheila E is my niece. The story of The Crossing and La Cruzada is really about my family, my father.”

He continues, “When (Donald) Trump came down the escalator and announced that some Mexicans were rapists and drug dealers I really took a stand, of course, as a lot of us probably did. I thought this is something that needs to be addressed. I’ve always tried to tell my Dad’s story, but I’ve never had a large Latin audience because I come from rock-and-roll, punk rock, and I sing in English.”

About La Cruzada’s 1,000 limited copies, Escovedo adds: “The record was just going to be a Record Store Day release in vinyl with the special packaging. Then the label was supposed to put it out as a general release for everyone on CD and vinyl, but because of Covid our tour was cancelled, and the release of the record was delayed. Not sure where that hangs right now with but hopefully with this Billboard attention they see there’s potential for a larger audience.”

“We used the same backing tracks we recorded for The Crossing,” Escovedo adds. “We translated the lyrics and Alex Ruiz, lead singer of band Del Castillo, recorded the vocals in Spanish at Rick del Castillo’s studio. I did some of the background vocals with him. I wanted Alex’s voice, though, I thought he could articulate the words in a way I probably wouldn’t because my Spanish isn’t that great.”

About the production of The Crossings Escovedo remembers: “My wife and I flew to Italy and spent a month making this record out there with Don Antonio. The distance somehow gave me the way of seeing the story and America in a different eye. Traveling is something I recommend, to see the world through other people’s eyes, to have a different view point.”

The album tells the tale of two boys — Diego from Mexico and Salva from Italy — who meet while working in a restaurant in Galveston, Texas to chase their American rock-and-roll dreams. La Cruzada gets the same treatment en español and earns Escovedo and Don Antonio their first top 10 on any Latin chart.

“It’s crazy!” Escovedo muses. “When my manager Randy gave me the news, it just went over my head and I didn’t understand it. I thought, ‘Oh, we’re going to do an interview with Billboard on the record,’ which I thought was wonderful, any attention is great. Then at the end of the conversation I said, ‘Tell me that again, what happened with the record?’ and he says: ‘You are No. 8 — in the top 10 — on the Latin Pop Albums chart.’ I flipped out; that’s something that’s never happened for me and this is a real blessing for us, it brought a lot of joy to another wise strange and dark and uncertain day.”

Trujillo and His Metallica Bandmates Named Record Store Day Ambassadors

Robert Trujillo is going on the record

The 51-year-old bassist and his fellow Metallica band mates will serve as the official 2016 ambassadors for this year’s Record Store Day, which is set for April 16, the same day a multitude of vinyl exclusives are set to descend on independent record stores across America.

Metallica

The metal legends broke the news in an eight-minute video featuring all four members recounting their lifelong vinyl love.

But that’s not all. Metallica will have a special record store day release. The same day, the band will release a new live album called Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité, Metallica!  featuring nine tracks recorded at a 2003 gig at Paris’ Bataclan, the same venue victimized by the November 2015 Paris attacks. All proceeds from the LP will go towards the Fondation de France‘s Give For France charity.

Metallica has a long history of involvement with Record Store Day. In 2008, the band hung out with fans at Rasputin Records in Mountain View, Calif., to help promote the event’s inaugural year. And last year, the reissue of Metallica’s 1982 demo cassette, No Life Til Leather, was crowned Record Store Day’s top seller.

“Independent record stores are part of Metallica’s DNA,” drummer Lars Ulrich said in an official statement. “They have been pivotal in shaping each one of us into the music fanatics we’ve all become. We could not be any prouder to be Record Store Day Ambassadors for 2016 and are looking forward to screaming from every rooftop the next few months about everything independent record store and beyond.”

Last year’s ambassador was Foo Fighter‘s Dave Grohl, preceded by Chuck D. in 2014 and Jack White in 2013.

Earlier this month, Metallica detailed plans to reissue its first two albums, 1983’s Kill ‘Em All and 1984’s Ride the Lightning. Both of these vault-opening box sets were scheduled to be released April 15, which now, conveniently, arrives just a day ahead of Record Store Day.

All this comes while Metallica is working on its so-far-untitled 10th studio album.

Here’s the track listing for Metallica’s forthcoming live album, Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité, Metallica! – Live at Le Bataclan. Paris, France – June 11th, 2003.

  1. “The Four Horsemen”
  2. “Leper Messiah”
  3. “No Remorse”
  4. “Fade to Black”
  5. “Frantic”
  6. “Ride the Lightning”
  7. “Blackened”
  8. “Seek and Destroy”
  9. “Damage, Inc.”

Trujillo’s Documentary “JACO” Added to This Year’s South by Southwest Film Conference and Festival Lineup

Robert Trujillo has new directions… South by Southwest….

The 50-year-old Mexican American musician and Metallica bassist’s latest film project is headed to this year’s South by Southwest Film Conference and Festival.

Robert Trujillo

JACO, co-written by Trujillo, will receive its world premiere at the Austin-based annual music, film, and interactive conference and festival.

JACO, the official documentary of Record Store Day in 2014, is the story of the extraordinary bassist Jaco Pastorius, who influenced Trujillo’s own music career. Pastorius changed the course of modern music through his work with Weather Report, Pat Metheny, Joni Mitchell and as a bandleader. Sony Legacy will be releasing the soundtrack

“We can get into a lot of the different levels in terms of composition and what he did for the instrument, but just the edge and attitude of the performance made me very excited about playing the bass,” recalls Trujillo. “That was one of the starting points. There was mystery and excitement to the instrument and this guy was taking it there.”

Trujillo previously appeared in the Metallica-centric film Metallica: Through The Never, Nimród Antal’s 3D concert-suspense film.

Meanwhile, Joaquim Castro and Eduardo Nazarian‘s look at Brazilian legend Dominguinhos; Christian Keller‘s scripted look at Mexican pop star Gloria Trevi, Gloria; and We Like It Like That, Mathew Ramirez Warren’s documentary on Latin boogaloo of the 1960s will also make appearances at the festival.

The SXSW Film Conference and Festival will be taking place March 13-21 festival in

The 22nd annual film festival includes 60 films from first-time filmmakers, 100 world premieres, 13 North American premieres and 11 U.S. premieres.
