DannyLux Among Shazam’s Five “Artists to Watch” in 2022

It could be a banner year for DannyLux

At the beginning of each year, Shazam uses its data to predict five artists to watch, and this year the song-identifying app used a combination of its “uniquely predictive data and algorithms,” as well as some selections from its parent company Apple Music’s global editorial team, to pick five “artists to watch” in 2022, including the Mexican-American singer.

DannyLuxDannyLux, whose real name is Daniel Balderrama, is well-known by fans of trio-turned-duo Eslabon Armado. The rising singer is featured on “Jugaste y Sufrí,” which holds the honor of being this year’s most Shazamed Regional Mexican track.

Although it was released at the end of 2020, TikTok embraced the song, helping to rocket songwriter DannyLux to new levels of acclaim.

He’s part of a wave of young artists reinventing corridos for a new generation and only stands to reach more listeners in the coming year.

Here are the five selections, and Shazam’s accompanying explanations:

Ayra Starr
Ayra Starr’s rise this year was largely mounted on her breakout track “Bloody Samaritan,” which had its first Shazam in Lagos. It was released as the lead single of the Nigerian singer-songwriter’s debut album 19 & Dangerous, but took on a life of its own as listeners were drawn in by an alluring violin melody that drops into contagious Afropop magic. An undeniable jam, “Bloody Samaritan” was the most Shazamed song by a local female artist in Nigeria this year—an impressive accomplishment considering it came out only in July.

DannyLux
Fans of trio-turned-duo Eslabon Armado probably need no introduction to DannyLux. The rising Mexican American singer is featured on “Jugaste y Sufrí,” which holds the honor of being this year’s most Shazamed regional mexicano track. Though it was released at the end of 2020, TikTok embraced it, helping to rocket songwriter DannyLux to new levels of acclaim. He’s part of a wave of young artists reinventing corridos for a new generation and only stands to reach more listeners in the coming year.

Lyn Lapid
Singer-songwriter Lyn Lapid is no stranger to viral success—her song “Producer Man” helped jump-start her career in 2020. With “In My Mind,” a mellow but soulful anthem for the quiet kids, she struck gold again. It became her most Shazamed song, charting in six countries, including Brazil, Indonesia, and the US. Though this one strikes a slightly different chord from her breakout, it only further highlights the many tools Lapid has in her arsenal, ready to be deployed as she takes on the new year.

Sad Night Dynamite
Mixing up a hypnotic blend of electronica, hip-hop, and Britpop, duo Sad Night Dynamite has a style that’s hard to define but captures the ear no less. Their eponymous debut mixtape, from February, ping-ponged between genres, but it was their latest single “Demon” that seemed to especially resonate. “Demon,” which features South African musician Moonchild Sanelly, is industrial and ominous, earning a spot on the FIFA 22 soundtrack. It also brought the pair their biggest Shazam success, with their all-time daily Shazams peaking soon after its release.

STAYC
In April, K-pop girl group STAYC released an effervescent ball of bubblegum pop titled “ASAP.” And every day since then, the single has remained on the South Korean Shazam chart. Pulled from the group’s second single album STAYDOM, “ASAP” has powered their rise as they continue to hone their Technicolor melodies and natural pop proficiency.

Jeronimo Folgueira Named New Deezer CEO

Jeronimo Folgueira is ready to lead…

Global audio streaming service Deezer has hired the Spanish executive to be its new CEO, the company has annouced.

Jeronimo Folgueira

Hans-Holger Albrecht, who has led Deezer since 2015, will step down and join Deezer’s board of directors. Albrecht will remain CEO through the end of June, with Folgueira taking over the position on July 1.

“I couldn’t be more excited to join Deezer,” Folgueira said in a statement. “They hold a unique place in our hearts and Deezer’s team has built a service that is the perfect companion to people’s daily lives. Deezer is a key player and contributor to the fast growth of music streaming around the world. We have a highly competitive platform with unique features that listeners love. That means we’re in a great place to accelerate our growth and capture many new opportunities, which will benefit both artists and music fans. I look forward to getting to know the team and writing the next chapter in the company’s history together.”

From 2015 to 2019, Folgueira was the CEO of Spark Networks, the online dating conglomerate that owns Christian Mingle, Jdate, and Zoosk among others. During his tenure, Folgueira quadrupled the Berlin-based company’s annual revenue to 250 million euros ($304 million) in 2019, before stepping down.

Albrecht says Deezer has grown its revenue by more than 300% in the last five years, and the platform now averages over 600 monthly streams per active user. “With the support of all shareholders and partners, a passionate team of 600 people have built the fourth largest global audio streaming service in the world,” Albrecht said in a statement. “We have a clear strategy in place to deliver long-term, sustainable growth and value for shareholders, artists and users.”

The French streaming service, largely popular in Europe, has 16 million monthly active users and is available in 180 countries around the world. Owned by Len Blavatnik’s Access Industries (which also owns Warner Music Group), Deezer was one of the earliest services to embrace high-fidelity streaming, launching its high-fidelity tier in September 2014, long before the current rush to promote better sound quality began.

Deezer cut the price of its hi-fi tier from $20 a month to $15 after Amazon Music HD launched at the lower price in September 2019, but with the recent price decreases to $10 a month for hi-fi streaming by Amazon and Apple Music, Folgueira will have to determine whether to match the rate offered by a pair of trillion-dollar companies and aim for scale or attempt to maintain Deezer’s margins at a less competitive price point.

With Spotify preparing its own hi-definition service that will arrive in the coming months, an era of increased competition among music streaming services awaits Folgueira in his new role.

Cardi B Rewrites Record for Most Weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Triller U.S. Chart

Cardi B is trill standing tall…

The 28-year-old half-Dominican rap superstar has rewritten the record for the most weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Triller U.S. chart, as “Up” spends its fifth week at No. 1 via the April 10-dated tally.

Cardi B

The Top Triller U.S. and Top Triller Global charts highlight the biggest songs on Triller based on a formula blending the amount of views of videos containing a respective songs, the level of engagement with those videos and the raw total of videos uploaded featuring each song, according to Triller.

Data for the charts is represented on a Friday-Thursday tracking week, with the latest period running March 25-April 1.

With its fifth week atop the tally, “Up” breaks out of a tie with Megan Thee Stallion’s “Cry Baby,” featuring DaBaby, and Dixie D’Amelio’s “Be Happy” for the most weeks at No. 1 in the history of Top Triller U.S., which began in July 2020.

“Up” first crowned the ranking dated February 27 and has since spent every week on the chart either at No. 1 or No. 2.

Concurrently, the song spends its second straight week at No. 2 on Top Triller Global after leading for two weeks last month.

According to Triller, the top video on the platform to use “Up” in the March 25-April 1 tracking period was a March 7 upload from user don22ovan.

“Up” is No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 alongside its return to No. 1 on Top Triller U.S. The song earned 22.4 million U.S. streams on digital service providers like Spotify, Apple Music and more; accumulated 34.5 million audience impressions on radio; and 8,000 digital downloads.

Ozuna Teams Up with Ovi for Hard-Hitting Trap/Reggaeton Single “Envidioso”

Ozuna has a message for the haters…

The 29-year-old Puerto Rican Latin trap and reggaeton singer has joined voices with up-and-coming Cuban corridos tumbados artist Ovi for the hard-hitting trap/reggaeton track titled “Envidioso.”

Ozuna x Ovi

The song, which marks their first-ever collaboration, finds the pair singing about working hard to get to where they are now. But climbing the ladder comes with envidiosos.

“The jealous one wants to see me do bad … they’re upset because I was able to progress,” they rap.

About the collaboration, Ozuna told Apple Music, “Ovi is a good guy, he’s a humble guy. He told me he wanted to do something with me and I thought if this can help his career go up, why not?”

Anuel AA & Ozuna Team Up for First Joint Album “Los Dioses”

They’ve collaborated several times… And now Anuel AA and Ozuna have taken it a step further.

The 28-year-old Puerto Rican artist and 28-year-old Dominican-Puerto Rican singer-songwriter, both Latin trap and reggaetón heavy-hitters, have joined voices for their first full-length project together.

Anuel AA & Ozuna

Anuel AA and Ozuna have consistently produced chart-toppers both in Latin America and across the globe, including hits like “Adicto,” “Cambio,” and “Patek.” And their established chemistry is on full display as the pair lay down 12 more tracks together for their highly anticipated joint album Los Dioses.

Standouts from the album include the fourth track “Antes,” which shows the duo surfing on an uptempo reggaeton beat captivating enough to make anyone wish nightclubs were open again.

RD” is another standout, a slightly-seductive trap-inspired tune penned as an ode to the Dominican Republic.

Nena Buena,” “Contra el Mundo,” and the album’s final track “Municiones,” are also all highpoints of the project.

“There’s no other artist that I feel flows and hits perfectly with me,” Anuel AA told Apple Music in an interview for the album about making music with Ozuna. “My favorite songs are with him, and he thinks the same of mine.” He continued, “The name Los Dioses came about because I’m not human,” Anuel says. “It is thanks to God that we are in this elite league.”

Here’s the album’s tracklist

Tracklist:
1. Los Dioses
2. 100
3. Antes
4. Dime Tù
5. RD

Rosalia, MAC Cosmetics, MAC Viva Glam 26

“You guys have been waiting for this,” Eilish captioned her post on social media, which includes a sneak peek of the music video for the song.

“Lo Vas a Olvidar” will be part of HBO hit Euphorias “Part Two: Jules’” soundtrack. The episode’s teaser on social media features a preview of the track.

Fans have been waiting for this dream collaboration ever since the Rosalia tweeted back in March 2019, “can’t wait to finish our song” along with a photo of the pair.

Then in April, Rosalía said in an interview with Apple Music‘s Zane Lowe that she had been working on finishing the song in her “little” studio: “I have been trying to finish the Billie Eilish collab. I think it’s getting quite close.”

“La Vas a Olvidar” is set to drop at 12:00 pm ET along with a music video.

Bad Bunny to Star Opposite Brad Pitt in the Action Film “Bullet Train”

Bad Bunny is speeding into Hollywood like a bullet

The 26-year-old Puerto Rican Latin trap and reggaeton singer will star opposite Brad Pitt in action film Bullet Train.

Bad Bunny

The Latin Grammy winner and platinum-selling recording artist joins a cast that includes Joey King, Aaron Taylor Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Zazie Beetz, Michael Shannon, Logan Lerman, Masi Oka and Andrew Koji.

David Leitch will direct and also supervise the script, which will be written by Zak Olkewicz.

The film is based on the Japanese novel Maria Beetle by bestselling author Kotaro Isaka.

Plot details are vague, and it is unknown who Sanada will be playing.

Bad Bunny’s most recent album, El Ultimo Tour del Mundo debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, becoming the first all-Spanish album to reach this position. This year, he was proclaimed the No. 1 artist globally on Spotify and the No. 1 Latin artist of 2020 by Billboard for second consecutive year.

Most recently, he released his single Dakiti with Jhay Cortez, which made history as the first Latin song to simultaneously reach #1 on the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. as well as on Spotify’s Top 200 and Apple Music’s Top 100: Global.

He’s set to make his acting debut in the Kevin Hart produced drama American Solestarring Pete Davidson, O’Shea Jackson Jr, Camila Mendes and Offset.

Ashanti to Face Off Against Keyshia Cole in Next Verzuz Battle

Ashanti is preparing for a big musical battle…

The 39-year-old part-Dominican American Grammy-winning singer and actress will face off against Keyshia Cole in the next Verzuz battle on December 12.

Ashanti

“Yeah, it’s official! The paperwork is IN,” the official Verzuz Instagram teased the “legendary Ladies Night,” with a split image of the singers’ faces.

The matchup is no surprise for fans, who’ve been buzzing about the potential pairing since May, when Cole commented under a side-by-side comparison of the duo’s hits. “My fans sent me this @timbaland @therealswizz @ashanti @verzuztv,” she wrote at the time. “is this accurate?”

The matchup marks the fourth female-charged battle, following Erykah Badu and Jill ScottMonica and Brandy, and Gladys Knight and Patti LaBelle.

Ashanti’s biggest hits include the chart-topping singles “Foolish” and “Always on Time,” with Ja Rule.

Don’t miss Cole and Ashanti’s Verzuz battle on Saturday, December 12 at 8:00 pm ET/5:00 pm PT on Verzuz’s Instagram page and on Apple Music.

AppleTV+ Releases First Trailer for “Mariah Carey’s Magical Christmas Special”

Mariah Carey is bringing the Magic this holiday season…

AppleTV+ has release the trailer and key art for the half-Venezuelan American Grammy-winning singer’s Mariah Carey’s Magical Christmas Special, which will start streaming on December 4.

Mariah Carey

The show will feature Carey, the unofficial Queen of Christmas, with Tiffany Haddish, Billy Eichner, Ariana Grande, Jennifer Hudson, Snoop Dogg, Jermaine Dupri, Misty Copeland and Mykal-Michelle Harris, as well as Carey’s 9-year-old twins, son Moroccan and daughter Monroe.

The special finds the world faced with a holiday cheer crisis, which the North Pole knows only one person can solve: Santa’s great friend, Mariah Carey. Combining musical performances, dancing and animation, the show finds Carey saving the day.

The soundtrack single and new music video for “Oh Santa!,” co-written by and featuring Carey performing with Grande and Hudson, will be distributed by Sony Music and released on Apple Music and other streaming platforms December 4.

The companion soundtrack to the special will include Snoop Dogg and Jermaine Dupri as additional musical guests, in addition to a new version of “Sleigh Ride.” The soundtrack will be available exclusively on Apple Music on December 4, and all other platforms December 11.

The Apple TV+ subscription service is available on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, iPod touch, Mac, select Samsung, LG, Sony, and VIZIO smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV and Roku devices, PlayStation and Xbox consoles, and at tv.apple.com.

Carey is the bestselling female artist of all time, with more than 200 million albums sold to date and 19 Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 singles (18 self-penned), more than any solo artist in history. She recently published her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, which debuted at No. 1 on the New York Times Best Seller list.
