HBO Max will premiere the CNN Films documentary On The Trail: Inside the 2020 Primaries, which captures the network’s team of female journalists and embeds, including the 28-year-old Latina video producer, as they covered the nomination contest.
The project will premiere on Thursday, August 6.
In addition to Diaz, those spotlighted include Dana Bash, Kaitlan Collins, Jessica Dean, Annie Grayer, Kyung Lah, MJ Lee, Abby Phillip, Arlette Saenz and Jasmine Wright.
HBO Max describes the project as a cinema verite feature in which viewers will see “the journalists pack up and leave their families to fan out across the country, to report on the president and his would-be rivals, as the candidates launch (and end) campaigns, and contend for voters.”
Sarah Aubrey, head of original content for HBO Max, said in a statement, “This is our first CNN Films documentary on the platform and a powerful representation of our commitment to create thought-provoking and deeply meaningful content together.”
The project is directed by Katie Hinman and Toby Oppenheimer.
Diaz previously covered the 2018 midterm elections.
Saenz is a CNN political correspondent based in Washington, D.C. She is covering Former Vice President Joe Biden and the 2020 presidential campaign.
The 35-year-old Colombian singer has notched his 23rd chart-topper on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart as “Rojo” rises 3-1 on the July 18 survey.
Balvin extends his second-most No. 1 record on the chart, trailing only Enrique Iglesias who continues at the helm with 30 No. 1s.
“Rojo” is the third single from Balvin’s latest album Colores, his fifth studio album, which peaked at No. 2 on the Top Latin Albums chart dated April 4.
Coloresconcurrently debuted at No. 15 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart.
“Rojo pushes to the top of the chart with 12.2 million audience impressions (up 33%) earned in the week ending July 12, according to Nielsen Music, MRC Data.
The 2020 Polaris Music Prize short list has been announced, with the 29-year-old Colombian-Canadian singer/songwriter’s latest studio effort among the artists nominated for the award celebrating the best Canadian album.
Reyez’s debut album Before Love Came to Kill Us, which was released this past March, is among the 10 finalists.
This is the second year in a row Reyez has made the short list.
Last year, her EP Being Human in Public lost out to Haviah Mighty’s debut album 13th Floor for the Polaris Music Prize.
But Reyez isn’t the only Latina in the running this year…
Lido Pimienta’s Miss Colombia has earned a spot on the short list.
In addition to Reyez and Pimienta’s albums, others making the short list include DJ/Producer Kaytranada (Bubba), Caribou (Suddenly), rapper Backxwash (God Has Nothing to do With This Leave Him Out of It), Toronto rapper Junia-T (Studio Monk), bands nêhiyawak (nipiy), Pantayo (Pantayo), Witch Prophet (DNA Activation) and three-time Polaris short-listers U.S. Girls (Heavy Light).
The Polaris Music Prize awards $50,000 to the artist who creates the Canadian Album of the Year, which is judged on artistic merit, without consideration of genre or sales.
The nine other nominated acts on the short list get $3,000. Eligible albums were released between May 1, 2019 and May 31, 2020.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual show will not be held in person, but the winner will be announced during a “cinematic tribute” on October 19.
Selena’s still the Ones… And, she’s still making history.
The late legendary Mexican American singer’s Ones compilation album is the first Latin title to hit No. 1 on Billboard’s nine-year old Vinyl Albums chart.
The new 2-LP vinyl picture disc of Ones, released July 3 via Universal Music Latin Entertainment, was such a hot seller during its first week, it helps the album re-enter at No. 1 on the all-genre Vinyl Albums sales chart.
The vinyl edition of Ones sold 6,000 copies in the week ending July 9.
Ones previously spent just one week on the list, at No. 4 on the November 5, 2016-dated list, after its original vinyl release.
With Ones‘ re-entry at No. 1, it marks the first time a Latin album has been No. 1 on that tally, which launched in January 2011 as vinyl album sales began making their comeback. (Vinyl albums sales have grown yearly from 2006 through 2019.)
“Selena continues without a doubt to be one of the most influential artists in the music industry today and these accomplishments are a testament that her music transcends generations and will live on forever,” says Armando Rodriguez, SVP Commercial Partners, Universal Music Latino, Machete Music& Capitol Latin.
Selena’s posthumous compilation album was originally released on October 1, 2002, a little more than seven years after her death in 1995. It debuted at No. 4 on the Top Latin Albums chart dated October 19, 2002, and peaked at No. 2 on the March 4, 2017, chart.
The album is now back in the top five on the Top Latin Albums chart dated July 18 thanks to its 8,000 equivalent album units (up 198 percent) earned in the week ending July 9, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data. Of that sum, nearly 6,000 are in album sales.
“Selena’s legacy is an inspiration for many fans and the artistic community, including Latin and non-Latin,” says Victor Gonzalez, president, Universal Music Latin Entertainment at Universal Music Group. “There is a deep connection between Selena’s old and new followers that puts her in a relevant position every time we revisit her music.”
Thanks to new vinyl edition of Ones, the set concurrently re-enters the all-genre Billboard 200chart at No. 116 after almost four years.
Onesincludes Selena’s No. 1 Hot Latin Songs hits “Buenos Amigos,” with Alvaro Torres (1992); “Donde Quiera Que Estés,” with the Barrio Boyzz (1994); “Amor Prohibido” (1994); “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” (1994); “No Me Queda Más” (1994); “Fotos y Recuerdos” (1994) and “Tú, Solo Tú,” Selena’s longest charting No. 1 title (1995). The set also includes a remixed version of “Si Una Vez“, by her brother, A.B. Quintanilla, retitled “Con Tanto Amor (Medley),” among other hits.
The 15-year-old Puerto Rican actor, who stars in Jon Chu’s upcoming Warner Bros. feature musical In The Heights, has signed with United Talent Agency (UTA).
Diaz previously appeared on Netflix’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and NBC’s New Amsterdam.
Diaz made his name on Broadway with his performance as Bruce in Matilda the Musicalin 2016 and also performed Off-Broadway in Pedro Pan, Zurich and You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.
He plays Sonny de la Vega in In the Heights, which is based on the musical by Quiara Alegria Hudes and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The film is scheduled for release in June 2021.
Diaz can also be seen in upcoming comedy film Vampires vs. the Bronx, written and directed by Oz Rodriguez and produced by Lorne Michaels.
The 44-year-old Mexican American actor and former Psych star will now go by James Roday Rodriguez.
In an interview with TVLine, he talked about his decision to switch his stage name to his birth surname.
His given middle name is David, which he’s replaced with Roday, given that he’s worked 20-plus years under that moniker.
Rodriguez says the idea began with conversations he had with his father about their family heritage and what his parents and grandparents went through growing up in Texas.
“It’s a deeply personal decision that I am doing for me,” said Rodriguez. “And I just hope it’s something that can be amplified. I hope we are all having these conversations in our lives. I hope we are all reflecting. I hope we’re all learning sh*t that we thought we knew but didn’t know.”
Rodriguez has already changed his name on social media.
After two decades as a working actor, the premiere of Psych 2: Lassie Come Home on Wednesday night will also mark the onscreen debut of James Roday Rodriguez.
Rodriguez also stars in ABC’s A Million Little Things.
The 41-year-old half Puerto Rican actor and former Queer Eye for the Straight Guy talent will host the Daytime Emmy Awards livestream ceremony honoring Digital Dramas this Sunday, while The Real’s Loni Love will host the ceremony for Children’s, Lifestyle & Animation programming next Sunday.
The host announcements were made by The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. NATAS also said the 41st Sports Emmy Awards will livestream on Tuesday, August 11, at 8:00 pm ET, and the 41st News & Documentary awards will stream in mid-to-late September, followed by the 71st Technology & Engineering Emmys in mid-to-late October.
Two dedicated specials will also debut this fall, one recognizing Lifetime Achievement honorees in Daytime, Sports, News & Documentary and Technology & Engineering programming, and the other recognizing Spanish-Language nominees across the genres.
The new formats were designed to fit the demands of the coronavirus pandemic.
“These unprecedented circumstances demanded new and exciting ways to recognize the great talents creating Daytime television,” said Adam Sharp, president & CEO of NATAS in a statement.
The Daytime Emmy Awards ceremony honoring Digital Dramas will livestream on Sunday, July 19, 9:00 pm ET. The ceremony for Children’s, Lifestyle & Animation programming will stream on Sunday, July 26, 8 p.m. ET. All events will be viewable on desktop, mobile, and smart TV platforms via TheEmmys.tv.

The 23-year-old Mexican and Cuban singer has mashed up three singles from her latest album, Romance, in a special medley recorded for the next installment of her virtual “Priceless Experiences at Home” concert series.
The new episode of Cabello’s series will be released on Wednesday, July 15.

The late part-Puerto Rican actress and Glee star used the last of her strength to save her 4-year-old son before she died, Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub said Monday.
“She mustered enough energy to get her son back onto the boat, but not enough to save herself,” he said.
A body discovered Monday morning at Lake Piru has been identified as the Rivera, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office said during a news conference.
Riveraand her son rented a pontoon boat at Lake Piru Wednesday. The child told rescuers he and his mother had gone into the water to swim, but she didn’t get back on the boat. He told investigators he then looked back and saw her disappear under the surface of the water, Ayub said.
Her son was found asleep on the rental pontoon boat after it was overdue for return. One life jacket was found on the boat and the boy was wearing another.
Her body was found floating in the northeast area of the lake where the water is between 35 and 60 feet deep Monday, after a six-day search. Ayub said investigators are “confident” the body found was Rivera, but the body is still being taken to Ventura County Coroner’s Office, where it will be identified through dental records.
Ayub said the sheriff’s department has been “in direct contact” with Rivera’s family.
“Her family has been at the lake everyday holding out hope and communicating with our investigators,” Ayub said.
The actress is best known for her role as Santana Lopez on Fox’s musical dramedy Glee. She appeared in nearly every episode of the beloved musical-comedy-drama, which ended in 2015.
Members of the show’s cast took to social media to mourn their costar, sharing their condolences to Rivera’s family.
“How can you convey all your love and respect for someone in one post?” Chris Colfer, who played Kurt on Glee, wrote on his Instagramin a lengthy, emotional caption of a picture of him and Rivera. “How can you summarize a decade of friendship and laughter with words alone? If you were friends with Naya Rivera, you simply can’t.”
“Rest sweet, Naya,” Jane Lynch, who played Coach Sue Sylvester on the show, tweeted. “What a force you were. Love and peace to your family.
Rivera was also on the CBS sitcom The Royal Family and in the comedy film The Master of Disguise. More recently, she starred in the Step Up television series, based on the movie franchise.
The 28-year-old Puerto Rican reggaetonand Latin trap singer is among the 2,321 people who’ve been invited to join the Recording Academy.
This year’s “freshman class,” as the academy calls it, is 48% female (compared to 49% in last year’s freshman class invites), 21% African American/African descent (compared to 26%), 8% Hispanic (compared to 7%), 3% Asian American/Pacific Islander/Asian (same as last year) and 51% people who are age 39 or younger (same as last year).
Some of those invited didn’t disclose their demographic details. On gender, 3% did not disclose. On ethnicity, 13% didn’t disclose. On age, a whopping 25% didn’t disclose.
Women account for 26% of the academy’s overall membership, not just the freshman class (same as last year). People from traditionally-underrepresented communities account for 25%, up a point from last year’s 24%. People who are age 39 or younger account for 25%, down from 29% last year.
According to the academy, 79% of this year’s freshman class is being invited as potential voting members, the other 21% as (non-voting) professional members.
Laura Segura, the executive director of MusiCares, said last year that it’ll become harder and harder for the Recording
Academy to find qualified new members to invite unless the music industry extends more opportunities to women and people of color.
“We will face challenges with future new member classes if not enough women and people of color are being hired, mentored and have access to opportunities to lead and excel,” she said.
The Academy also created a 90-minute video, “Your Academy: Welcoming the 2020 New Member Class,” in which both current members, like John Legend and Yolanda Adams, and 2020 invitees, including Ozuna, discuss membership.
The discussion, held on Zoom on June 24, was moderated by Justin Joseph, Grammy.com editor-in-chief. The roundtable debuted today on GRAMMY.com.
In order to participate in the process for the upcoming Grammy Awards, prospective new members have to accept their invitations by September 15.
The 63rd Grammy Awards are scheduled to take place on January 31, 2021, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
