In addition to Riva and Penn, the cast includes Joel Kim BoosterKiran DeolPoppy LiuMoses Stormand Samba Schutte.

Diana Maria Riva to Star in NBC’s Comedy Pilot “Sunnyside”

Diana Maria Riva is looking at the sunnyside of life…

The 49-year-old Dominican American actress has been cast opposite Kal Penn in NBC’s comedy pilot Sunnyside (formerly Untitled Kal Penn/Matt Murray).

Riva joins a cast that includes Kiran Deol, Moses Storm, Samba Schutte, Poppy Liu, Joel Kim Booster and Tudor Petrut.

Co-written by Penn and Matt MurraySunnyside is named after the neighborhood in the historically diverse Queens borough of New York where the show is set. It centers on former New York City Councilman Garrett Shah (Penn), who finds his calling when faced with seven recent immigrants — five of them played by immigrant actors — in need of his help and in search of the American Dream.

The single-camera comedy is being executive produced by Penn, writer-producer Murray, The Good Place creator/executive producer Michael Schur and Universal Television.

The seven recent immigrants are Jin Hao, played by South Korea-born Booster; Mallory, played by UK-born Deol; Mei Lin, played by China-born Liu; Drzen, played by Romania-born Petrut; Hakim, played by Africa-born Schutte; Griselda, played by Riva, a first generation Dominican; and Brady, played by Storm.

Directing the pilot is another immigrant, Oz Rodriguez. The ensemble was put together by casting director Allison Jones who also has worked with Schur on his other shows, Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Good Place

Riva was last seen in the CBS sitcom Man with a Plan and NBC’s Telenovela. She’ll next appear in the Netflix series Dead to Me and the Appledrama series Morning Show.

Moreno Brooks to Star Opposite Eva Longoria in NBC’s “Telenovela” Series

Jose Moreno Brooks is ready for a little melodrama in his life…

The Latino semi-pro-soccer-player-turned-actor has landed a series regular role in NBC’s 13-episode single-camera comedy series Telenovela.

Jose Moreno Brooks

Starring and executive produced by Eva Longoria, the series is based on an idea by Longoria.

Directed by Steve Pink, Telenovela stars Longoria as popular diva Ana Maria, star of Latin America’s most beloved telenovela who strives to stay on top in a world where the drama on-camera is nothing compared to the drama off-camera.

Moreno Brooks will portray Gael Garnica, a masculine soap star who happens to be gay, married and not in the closet. He’s one of Ana’s best friends.

Jencarlos Canela and Diana Maria Riva co-star.

Longoria and Ben Spector executive produce for Universal Television. The project is written/executive produced by Chrissy Pietrosh and Jessica Goldstein.

Moreno Brooks’s other television credits include appearances on Big Time Rush, The Nine Lives of Chloe King, The Game and One Bad Choice.

Riva Cast in NBC’s Comedy Pilot “The Gates”

Diana Maria Riva is crashing the gates

The 43-year-old Latina actress, who appeared in Mel Gibson’s What Women Want, has been cast in the NBC comedy pilot The Gates, a project from 20th Century Fox Television and Kapital Entertainment.

Diana Maria Riva II

The Gates, written by Cathy Yuspa and Josh Goldsmith, is based on the British series. It’s an adult ensemble comedy set at the front gates of an elementary school drop-off and revolves around the parents, school staff and 15-minute social minefield they have to navigate at the beginning and end of each school day.

The show centers on the type-A Helen, who just moved to town with her husband Mark and their eight year-old daughter for Helen’s big new job – the VP of Product Development at Williams-Sonoma.

Riva, who most recently starred in CBS’ short-lived series iRob!, will play Lindsay, the head of the PTA who is very easily pissed off.

Riva’s television credits include appearances on The Drew Carey Show, Everybody Loves Raymond, CSI, Less Than Perfect and Castle.

Derbez Ready to Make English-Language TV Debut in iRob!

Eugenio Derbez is ready for his close-up on English-language television in the States after hosting the Latin Grammys and starring in the critically acclaimed indie film La Misma Luna opposite Kate del Castillo.

The 49-year-old Mexican comedian/actor, who currently appears as a Mexican gardener in Adam Sandler’s latest film Jack & Jill, will be making his U.S. television debut in Rob Schneider’s new CBS sitcom, ¡Rob!

Eugenio Derbez

“[¡Rob! is going to be] a really, really funny series!” says Derbez, who made his television debut at the age of 12 as an extra in a telenovela. “Remember the movie Meet the Parents? Well this is like, Meet the Mexicans!”

iRob! stars Schneider as a bachelor who marries into an extremely tight-knit Mexican-American family.

In addition to Derbez, the show will star Cheech Marin, Diana Maria Riva and Lupe Ontiveros as the Deuce Bigalow star’s in-laws.

“There’s this culture clash when they arrive,” adds Derbez. “It’s a really funny situation.”

Several episodes of the half-hour comedy have already been filmed and the network plans to debut the show in mid-January.

But Derbez isn’t putting all his acting huevos in one basket. He’s set to costar with Eva Mendes, Espinoza Paz and Raini Rodriguez in the upcoming movie Girl in Progress.
