The Release Date of Rodriguez’s “Machete Kills” Moved to October

If you’re anxious to see Robert Rodriguez’s Machete Kills, you’ll have to wait a tad longer.

Open Road has shifted the release of the 44-year-old Mexican American filmmaker’s sequel to the Danny Trejo-starrer Machete to October 4 from its earlier September 13 date.

Along with Trejo, Machete Kills stars Michelle Rodriguez, Sofia Vergara, Amber Heard, Charlie Sheen, Lady Gaga, Antonio Banderas, Jessica Alba, Demián Bichir, Alexa Vega, Vanessa Hudgens and Mel Gibson.

Trejo returns as the blade-wielding ex-Federale agent, who this time is recruited by the President of the United States for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man – he must take down a madman revolutionary and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war and anarchy across the planet

The script, by Kyle Ward, is based on a story by Rodriguez and his brother Marcel.

The 44-year-old Mexican American director has released the first trailer to his sequel to the 2010 grindhouse-inspired film Machete.

By the looks of things, Rodriguez has amped up the camp, as well as carnage, in the Danny Trejo-starrer.

In the sequel, Trejo portrays blade-savvy former Mexican Federale Machete, who is recruited by the President of the United States for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man – he must take down a madman revolutionary and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer (Mel Gibson) who has hatched a plan to spread war across the planet.

In addition to Trejo and Gibson, the film also stars Michelle Rodriguez, Sofia Vergara, Amber Heard, Antonio Banderas, Jessica Alba, Demian Bichir, Alexa Vega, Vanessa Hudgens, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Charlie Sheen, who is using his birth name in the film credits.

There are reportedly plans to make Machete a trilogy, especially if the sequel does anywhere near the first film, which earned $44M worldwide on an approximately $10M production budget.

Machete Kills will be released on September 13.

The 44-year-old Mexican American director’s Machete Kills, the sequel to Machete and the second in a planned trilogy, will be released on September 13, 2013.

Open Road Films has announced that the company will be distributing Machete Kills, the highly anticipated film from the 44-year-old Mexican-American filmmaker.

The second movie in the trilogy, which stars Danny Trejo as rough-faced ex-Federale agent Machete, comes from a screenplay by Kyle Ward. It’s based on a story by Rodriguez and his brother Marcel Rodriguez.

Along with Trejo, the film stars pop diva Lady Gaga in her film acting debut, as well as Oscar nominee Demian Bichir, Sofia Vergara, Amber Heard, Charlie Sheen, Antonio Banderas, Jessica Alba, Alexa Vega, Vanessa Hudgens, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Mel Gibson.

In 2010′s cult favorite Machete, Trejo made a mess while seeking revenge on an old boss, with cameos by celebrities like Lindsay Lohan.

In the sequel, Trejo as Machete is recruited by none other than the President of the United States to take down a “madman revolutionary and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war and anarchy across the planet,” according to the Open Road press release.

Machete Kills is expected to hit theaters in 2013.

Sheen Cast as U.S. President in “Machete” Sequel

Following in his father Martin Sheen’s footsteps, Charlie Sheen is about to get presidential.

The 46-year-old part-Spanish actor has joined the cast of Robert Rodriguez’s Machete Kills. Like Sheen’s father, who played President Josiah Bartlet on The West Wing, the controversial actor will play the President of the United States.

Rodriguez made the announcement Thursday on Twitter, where he wrote, “I just cast Charlie Sheen in #machetekills as the President of the United States! Who better? More soon…”

Sheen, who will be starring in FX’s new series Anger Management, retweeted that message, and a representative for the controversial actor confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that negotiations are taking place.

Rodriguez is currently in production on the sequel to his Grindhouse action movie Machete,  which once again stars Danny Trejo as the title character and includes Jessica Alba, Demián Bichir, Sofia Vergara and Zoe Saldana.

In the sequel, Machete is called upon by the U.S. government to stop a cartel leader and an arms dealer who have a weapon in space.

The broadly-written part initially called for the president to be African-American and have a basketball court on the White House lawn but has since been rewritten.

Vergara joins an all-star cast that includes Jessica Alba, Amber Heard, Michelle Rodriguez, Mel Gibson and Demian Bichir for the sequel to 2010’s Machete.

Danny Trejo will return as the protagonist Machete, a former Mexican cop. In the sequel, he’ll work with the U.S. government to stop a drug lord and an arms dealer – played by Gibson – from launching a missile.

Vergara will likely play Madame Desdemona, boss of a stable of working girls who have information Machete needs, says Variety.

The first Machete film was made for $10.5 million and earned nearly $44 million at the worldwide box office.

Shooting on Machete Kills is set to begin this month.

Bichir Firming Up Post-Oscars Projects

He’s one of Mexico’s beloved actors… And, now it appears Demián Bichir is on the verge of superstardom in Hollywood…

The 48-year-old Mexican actor—who received an Academy Award nomination for his critically acclaimed performance in A Better Life—is lining up his next two English-language projects.

Bichir is currently in talks to join the cast of Machete Kills, the follow-up to Robert Rodriguez‘s cult classic Machete. Co-starring Jessica Alba and Mel Gibson, the sequel will find Danny Trejo’s iconic character Machete battle his way through Mexico in order to take down an arms dealer looking to launch a weapon into space.

In addition, Bichir will star in William Friedkin‘s thriller Trapped, where he’ll reportedly play an Israeli agent.

Bichir—who got his start in Mexican telenovelas before crossing over into English-language projects, including an acclaimed recurring role on Showtime’s Weeds, can next be seen in Oliver Stone’s upcoming dramatic thriller Savages, co-starring Salma Hayek and Benicio del Toro

Rodriguez Launching Animation Studio

Robert Rodriguez may soon become the Latino Walt Disney

The 43-year-old Mexican-American filmmaker—who recently announced an English-language general entertainment network aimed at Latino audiences—is launching Quick Draw Animation, an animation studio to be based in Austin, TX.

Quick Draw Animation, a partnership with London-based VMG Entertainment, will allow Rodriguez to develop, produce and green-light animated film and television projects.

“I started my career as a cartoonist when I created the Los Hooligans comic strip. It is nice to come full circle and return to animation,” says Rodriguez. “Quick Draw Animation will give me a whole new set of tools to create fantastic characters and to tell great stories.”

“We are thrilled to be working with a filmmaker of Robert Rodriguez’s caliber and stature,” said VMG Entertainment Chairman Mr. Ramkhumar Narasimhan. “Robert has created significant franchises such as The Mexico Trilogy, Sin City, Spy Kids and the Machete films; his prolific output and visual storytelling make animation a great fit for him.”

Quick Draw Animation has already started developing two animated features, each expected to start production in the next year. One of the new company’s first projects is a family focused animated feature; the other is the multi-media realization of Heavy Metal inspired by the cult animated film and long running magazine. Rodriguez teased the audience with a glimpse of what the next generation of Heavy Metal will look like at last year’s Quick Draw Comic-Con presentation.
