Rodriguez Makes Debut as a Lead Act on Billboard Charts with Spanglish Cover of Adele’s “Hello”

Karen Rodriguez is saying “Hello” to the Billboard charts for the first time…

The Peruvian and Dominican American singer and former American Idol contestant (Season 10) has made her Billboard chart debut as a lead act with her viral Spanish-language rendition of Adele’s hit single “Hello.”

Karen Rodriguez

Rodriguez enters the Latin Pop Digital Songs chart at No. 4 (2,000 downloads). A video posted on Rodriquez’s YouTube channel has garnered more than 3.6 million views since being uploaded on December 1, also supporting a No. 3 debut on the Billboard + Twitter Emerging Artists chart.

“I just connected with the song and really had the urge of writing and singing it in Spanish,” Rodriguez told Billboard. “I never expected my Spanglish version to go viral!”

When asked about how she adapted the English song to Spanish she reveals, “It was my own interpretation and I chose to write it in a way that made sense to me but still kept the essence of the original.”

While Rodriguez enjoys her first solo chart arrival, she is no stranger to the Latin charts — as a songwriter. She was a co-writer on Romeo Santos’ 2014 smash hit “Odio,” featuring Drake — a 13-week chart leader on the Hot Latin Songs chart.

The climb earns the band its 14th top 20, and its highest showing since “Mi Segunda Vida” peaked at No. 13 in May, 2014.

“Lo Hiciste” likely reaches a new peak on Billboard’s Regional Mexican Airplay, bounding 17-7 and capturing an 18th top 10.

The track was released in November of last year, and its corresponding music view has garnered more than 11 million page views on YouTube.

There’s no denying Adriana Lima can strut her stuff on the runway… But did you know she can also lip-sync for her life?

The 33-year-old Brazilian supermodel and actress, a Victoria’s Secret Angel since 2000, and her fellow Victoria’s Secret model give Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” the Angel treatment in the teaser video for the lingerie brand’s annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

Thorne Releases Debut Single “Call It Whatever”

Bella Thorne is ready to drop it like it’s pop

16-year-old half-Cuban American actress and former Disney Channel recently unveiled her debut single, “Call It Whatever.”

Bella Thorne

The former Shake It Up star’s bubblegum track has earned more than 153,000 views on YouTube since its May 13 release, and previews a debut album that Thorne says won’t follow in the path of the network’s other former stars like Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez.

“I don’t think about anything close to that,” Thorne tells Billboard when asked about the inevitable comparisons. “I don’t think, ‘Well, Miley went this way, and Selena went that way, so I have to go in the middle.’ That’s not it. I’m just being me. My song is called ‘Call It Whatever.’ You can call me whatever, if you like me or not like me. I really don’t care.”

The release of “Call It Whatever” — which was produced by Paro and co-written by Par Westerland, Rickard Goransson and Skyler Stonestreet — comes roughly a year and a half after Thorne signed to Hollywood Records, the home of Gomez as well as young female stars like Lucy Hale and Demi Lovato.

When the deal was finalized, Thorne was already starring on the network’s hit sitcom Shake It Up along with Zendaya. Thorne released the song “TTYLXOX” on the Shake It Up: Live 2 Dance soundtrack in 2012, but for the Florida native, a full-fledged pop career was always going to take a bit longer to kick-start.

“I really wanted to work on my voice,” says Thorne. “I never sang before, and I didn’t want to put an album out that I wasn’t proud of, or that was Auto-tuned or anything like that. I waited so that I could take a lot of vocal classes, so that I could work on my voice every day.”

The music video for “Call It Whatever” will premiere on May 29, and was filmed in Los Angeles — at the same location, Thorne points out, that Kelis filmed her “Milkshake” video. Thorne’s debut album is due out later in the summer, and won’t necessarily feature the kid-friendly vibe of its lead single.

“‘Call It Whatever’ is my youngest-sounding song,” she says. “This song is definitely for my younger audience. I don’t want to eliminate them, but my album is geared a little bit older. I have some more indie type of songs, some hip-hop, some with an 80s feel, and I have dance music on there.”

While Thorne hopes to tour extensively behind her first album, she has a handful of other projects to promote: she co-stars in the new Adam Sandler comedy Blended and the upcoming film adaptation of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day, among several other film projects. Her first book, Autumn Falls, is due out in November, and is featured in a Neutrogena beauty campaign.

“I want to try everything,” says Thorne. “And I want to be great at everything, if it’s the last thing I do.”

Gomez Hits the Lights on DWTS

She may have announced plans to concentrate on her acting career… But that didn’t stop Selena Gomez from hitting the stage to perform one of her most recent songs.

Selena Gomez on DWTS

The 19-year-old half-Mexican American singer/actress—who recently released a YouTube video detailing her commitment to acting projects in the coming months—appeared live on ABC‘s Dancing with the Stars results show to sing with her band, The Scene.

Wearing a gold and black dress with tutu-like skirt and some killer heels, the former Disney Channel star delivered a rousing rendition of her most recent single “Hit the Lights.”

But Gomez wasn’t the only Latina artist appearing on the DWTS results show…

During the Macy’s Stars of Dance performance, which was hailed as a special tribute to Latin dance music, 54-year-old part-Mexican percussionist Sheila E. provided the music as dancers in vibrant costumes hit the dance floor.

Gomez Launches Her First Ever Fragrance

Move over Jennifer Lopez and Shakira! There’s a new Latina starlet-created fragrance on the market…

This week Selena Gomez launched her very own fragrance, which is named after her, at a special event in New York City.

Selena-Gomez-Fragrance

The 19-year-old half-Mexican American actress and singer says she was inspired by Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen when she was creating the perfume.

“I’ve always wanted to [create my own fragrance] since Mary-Kate and Ashley had their little body sprays,” the former Wizards of Waverly Place star admitted to Us Weekly. “I loved those and was obsessed with them.”

So why did she name her debut fragrance after herself?

“It’s called my name, because I didn’t want to get all philosophical with my first one,” explained the “Hit the Lights” singer. “I wanted it to be representing me so it’s really fun, very sophisticated and also fruity. The only way I can describe it is yummy!”

Gomez—who recently released a YouTube video talking about her latest projectswent on to talk about how she let her fans help in the making of her first perfume.

“They’re the ones wearing it, so I trust them – their opinions and everything that they’ve done for me,” she said.

A day before launching her perfume, Gomez shared a photo of herself with the fragrance’s girlie purple packaging. The perfume has a long bottle and is topped off with a golden cap that’s bursting with kisses. Along with the image, she wrote, “Ahhh it’s so purrty… So excited, nervous and hyper.”

Gomez’s fragrance will be available exclusively at Macy’s for $35, $45 and $55 starting May. In August, it will be sold at Nordstrom, Ulta, Dillard’s, Bonton and SSI.
