Selena Gomez Named Billboard’s 2017 Woman of the Year

Selena Gomez is the belle of the Billboard ball…

The 25-year-old Mexican American singer has been named Billboard’s 2017 Woman of the Year.

Selena Gomez

Gomez, a two-time Billboard 200 chart-leader will be presented with the award on November 30 at the annual Women in Music dinner and awards gala, held at Los Angeles’ Ray Dolby Ballroom.

Gomez, an award-winning singer, producer and actress, will join an all-star cast of previous Woman of the Year honorees including Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Pink, Katy Perry, Fergie, Beyoncé and last year’s winner, Madonna, who delivered a moving speech that touched on feminism, sexism and much more.

“Not only is Selena soaring on the charts, but she continuously inspires young women everywhere to be authentic, give back and to not be afraid to use their voice,” said John Amato, president of The Hollywood Reporter-Billboard Media Group. “She is never afraid to speak her mind and has used her platform to advocate for the needs of others. We are thrilled to be able to honor her as our Woman of the Year.”

Gomez’ career has never been in better shape. In 2015 and 2016, she enjoyed top 10 Billboard Hot 100 smashes with “Same Old Love” and “Hands to Myself” and “We Don’t Talk Anymore.” The trend continues, with hits “Bad Liar,” “Fetish” (featuring Gucci Mane) and “It Ain’t Me” (with Kygo) in the past year.

Five of her albums have cracked the top 10 of the Billboard 200, with the studio albums Revival (2015) and Stars Dance (2013) leading the chart.

Not confined to music, Gomez also executive-produced the Netflix drama 13 Reasons Why, launched partnerships with Coach and Puma, and worked tirelessly across various philanthropic endeavors, from the Step Up Foundation to coaching for World Kindness Day, and raising more than $500,000 for the Lupus Research Alliance. Also, Gomez has been an active ambassador for UNICEF since 2009.

The event, held in conjunction with the publication of Billboard’s Women in Music issue, also recognizes the most powerful female executives in the industry. Additional Women in Music honorees will be revealed at a later date.

For the first time, the Women in Music event and a red-carpet pre-show will be broadcast live for on Twitter from 9:00 pm-midnight EST on November 30.

Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 gives the sense of a departure from the usual Harris sound, a hint amplified by the much groovier, toned-down disco funk vibe of the soundtrack tune. Lopez to Perform at Hillary Clinton “Love Trumps Hate” Event in Miami

Jennifer Lopez is stumping for Hillary Clinton

Despite Donald Trump’s downward spiral in the polls, the Democratic presidential candidate is calling on some big names to help sway undecided voters in key battleground states.

Jennifer Lopez

The campaign announced a series of events dubbed “Love Trumps Hate” that will feature performances by the 46-year-old Puerto Rican singer/actress, Katy Perry and Jon Bon Jovi, among others.

According to the campaign scheduling siteBon Jovi is slated to perform in Pittsburgh on October 27 and Tampa on November 5, while Lopez will be in Miami on October 29; no additional event details have been announced.

“The performance series will feature a number of artists performing in battleground states who will energize our supporters and encourage them to turn out to vote on Election Day or to take advantage of early voting options in their states,” said Clinton’s campaign via press release. More performances will be announced in the coming days.

The phrase “love trumps hate” was used by Clinton during her primetime address at the Democratic National Convention in July.

The announcement explained that the performances will also serve as a recruiting opportunity to find new volunteers for the home stretch of the campaign.

“In the final weeks of the campaign, what voters will hear from these performers and all HFA surrogates is that Hillary Clinton has the experience and steadiness to bring people together and get real results,” the statement continued. “The choice in this election is clear. We can either come together to tackle the big challenges facing the country or let Donald Trump keep tearing us apart with his divisive rhetoric and dangerous ideas. That’s why millions of people are coming together to support Hillary Clinton and send a clear message that ‘love trumps hate.’”

Lopez: 2015’s Highest-Earning Latina in Music

Jennifer Lopez is this year’s highest-earning Latina in music, according to Forbes.

The 46-year-old Puerto Rican singer, actress and American Idol judge comes in at No. 7 on the magazines’ annual list of the Highest-Paid Women in Music, released Wednesday

Jennifer Lopez

Lopez made $28.5 million this year, despite only playing five concerts during Forbes’ scoring period.

Lopez made double-digit millions as a judge on Idol; recent acting roles include the film The Boy Next Door. With a Bronx-inspired residency at Las Vegas’ Planet Hollywood due to start in early 2016, Lopez’s stock could rise in 2016.

But Lopez isn’t the only Latina to make this year’s list.

Mariah Carey comes in at No. 9 with earnings of $27 million.

In May 2015, the 45-year-old half-Venezuelan American songstress joined a long line of cash queens in taking her talents to Las Vegas for a residency. Dubbed Mariah Carey’s #1’s, the series is set to stretch into 2016, making her an early favorite to land on next year’s list.

Katy Perry topped this year’s list with $135 million.

Santos Rules YouTube’s Total Views Chart

Forget Taylor Swift, Beyonce and Katy PerryRomeo Santos is the real YouTube leader.

The 33-year-old Dominican American singer, the undisputed king of bachata, is also leader on YouTube, far outpacing several mainstream artists in terms of total views.

Romeo Santos

With more four billion total views (4,351,032,074, to be exact), Santos towers over Swift (over 3.7 billion), Beyoncé (over 2 billion), Perry (over 2.6 billion), Shakira (over 1.2 billion), and other mainstream pop artists.

YouTube based its total views on both official and fan-uploaded videos from September 2014 to June 30, 2015. Only videos claimed using “Content ID” get counted. The latter is a system used by copyright owners to identify and manage their content on YouTube. When a fan, for instance, uploads content matching a work an artist owns, the copyright owner gets to decide what happens to that video; options include blocking the video, monetizing on its views by running ads against it, and tracking the video’s viewership stats. Only copyright owners who own exclusive rights to a substantial body of original material that is frequently uploaded by the YouTube user community get a Content ID.

The latest YouTube data also shows where Santos’ fanbase views are coming from. Colombia is No. 1, with over 700 million views, followed by Mexico, Argentina, Ecuador and the U.S.

But Santos’ rule is equally impressive in his home state of New York, where, according to the Wall Street Journal’s recent Musical Map of New York City study, which used data from e-jukebox vendor TouchTunes, the Dominican American heartthrob is the most popular artist in over 50 city neighborhoods.

Recently, Santos also made Billboard history on the Hot Latin Songs chart with his smash “Propuesta Indecente,” the first-ever song to reach the 100th week mark on the chart.
