Anthony Gonzalez’s Disney-Pixar Film “Coco” Wins Thanksgiving Holiday Box Office

He’s nowhere near voting age, but Anthony Gonzalez is beating superheroes at the box office…

The 13-year-old Latino actor voices the character of Miguel, a young Mexican boy with musical dreams who has a wondrous adventure in the Land of the Dead in DisneyPixar’s animated film Coco, which won the Thanksgiving holiday box office.

Anthony Gonzalez

Gonzalez’s Coco earned $71.2 million at 3,987 North American sites during the Wednesday-Sunday period, while Warner Bros.DC Entertainment’s Justice League pulled in $60 million at 4,051 locations during the same timeframe in its second weekend in theaters.

Coco posted for the fourth-best Thanksgiving holiday opening ever, trailing three other Disney titles — Frozen with $93 million in 2013, Moana with $82 million in 2017 and Toy Story 3 with $80 million in 2010.

Audiences surveyed by comScore’s PostTrak gave Coco strong ratings with 66% calling it “excellent,” and another 23% rating it “very good.”  Surveys also showed 77% of viewers saying they would “definitely recommend” the movie to friends and 20% saying they would watch it again in a theater.

Coco

Coco, directed by Lee Unkrich and co-directed by Adrian Molina, is based on the traditions surrounding the Day of the Dead holiday in Mexico and centers on a 12-year-old boy who dreams of becoming a musician and explores his family history in the Land of the Dead. The studio hasn’t released a price for the movie. Disney-Pixar titles are usually budgeted in the $175 million to $200 million range.

In addition to Gonzalez, in his breakout role, Coco’s ensemble voice cast includes Benjamin Bratt, Gael Garcia Bernal, Renee Victor, Edward James Olmos, Ana Ofelia Murguia, Jaime Camil, Sofia Espinosa, Gabriel Iglesias, Cheech Marin and Lombardo Boyar.

The holiday weekend is one of the busiest moviegoing periods of the year. According to comScore, this year’s five-day Thanksgiving weekend saw total grosses his $268 million — $7.5 million better than last year’s when Moana opened with $82 million, and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them taking in $65 million in its second weekend.

The strong holiday performance left the 2017 overall domestic total at $9.71 billion, or 4% behind the same point last year, according to comScore. The industry fell behind last year’s record-setting total due to downbeat performances in August and October — so much so that the much-anticipated Dec. 15 opening of Star Wars: The Last Jedi will probably not be enough to pulled this year even.

Erika Ender Inducted Into the Latin Song Writers Hall of Fame

She’s the woman behind the song of the summer… And, now Erika Ender has earned her place in Latin music history.

At the fifth annual La Musa Awards gala last week — hosted by Jane the Virgin‘s Jaime Camil – the Panamanian-Brazilian singer/songwriter was inducted into the prestigious Latin Song Writers Hall of Fame, the youngest inductee in the hall’s history.

 Erika Ender

Along with Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, Ender is co-writer of the biggest hit of the year, “Despacito,” featuring Justin Bieber, which spent 16 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100.

Born in Panama to a Brazilian mother and a U.S.-born father of German ancestry, Ender speaks fluent Portuguese and Spanish, and moves easily between cultures.

Before “Despacito,” she had written hits for ChayanneGilberto Santa RosaGloria TreviEdnita Nazario and Los Tigres del Norte. She also is a TV personality in Latin America, where she has been a judge for a Latin version of American Idol.

Along with Ender, Ana GabrielRoberto LiviMartin UrietaCarlos Vives and Camilo Sesto were also inducted into hall of fame.

The Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame is dedicated to educating, preserving, honoring and celebrating “the lives and music of the world’s greatest Latin songwriters, composers and lyricists in every genre while developing and inspiring new generations of music creators through master classes, workshops, scholarships and digital initiatives.”

Camil Makes Broadway History Opposite Bianca Marroquin in “Chicago”

Jaime Camil is making historia

The 42-year-old Mexican actor and Jane the Virgin star has made Broadway history.

Jaime Camil

With his performance in Chicago on Monday night, it’s the first time, two Mexican-born actors have lead a Broadway musical, as he plays Billy Flynn opposite Bianca Marroquin as Roxie Hart.

“One of my dreams has always been to be in a Broadway musical,” says Camil, who has led musicals in Mexico City including West Side Story, Hook and Aladdin. “I love the stage — the fact that you only have one take to get it right, the interaction with the audience, and how every show is different even though you’re doing the same thing.”

Eleven years ago, Camil nearly made his Broadway debut in The Mambo Kings —until producers pulled the plug on the musical adaptation just weeks before previews were to begin.

But Camil has finally had his moment on the Great White Way stage…

“Chicago is amazing because there’s no special effects or explosions. It’s just a group of talented human beings doing amazing things,” he says. “Billy Flynn is a character who manipulates these people like puppets. Everything happens because of him; it’s not a matter of if he’s going to win a case, it’s a matter of when. I love that he’s the mastermind behind everything that happens. He’s a fun character to play.”

In “All I Care About,” Camil even throws in a line in Spanish.

“That was the stage manager’s idea! When Eddie George was in this, he did his signature touchdown dance in ‘Razzle Dazzle.’ So when the girls are fondling me behind their feathers, I say in Spanish, ‘Oh please, stop it — you know I like it!’ It works nicely for the Spanish-speaking fans who come to the show.”

Camil will continue appearing in Chicago through July 31 at the Ambassador Theatre.

Gina Rodriguez is ready to bust a move to one of her childhood favorites…

It was announced earlier this week that Britney Spears will guest-star on the CW‘s cult hit Jane the Virgin this season. And the 31-year-old Puerto Rican actress couldn’t be more excited, saying Spears “is my childhood.”

Gina Rodriguez

“I just want to do the dance from ‘…Baby One More Time‘ with her on set … and record it,” Rodriguez told People magazine. “I want to do that so badly!”

The Golden Globe-winning actress is “so freakin’ stoked” to have Spears on set. “She was literally the first pop star I ever knew existed.”
