J Balvin Earns 25th No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay Chart with Tainy SpongeBob Collaboration, “Agua”

There’s no watering down J Balvin’s success…

The 35-year-old Colombian reggaeton singer’s collaboration with Tainy, “Agua,” has risen to the top of Billboard‘s Latin Airplay chart, rising 2-1 on the September 5 survey.

J Balvin, SpongeBob

It’s Balvin’s 25th No. 1, moving him closer to Enrique Iglesias’ record 31. Tainy, meanwhile, ups his career count to two chart-toppers.

Featured on the forthcoming soundtrack to The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, the song was released in July. A date for the film’s release has not been received.

“It’s a career highlight,” Tainy tells Billboard. “This one is special because it was fun. Working with Balvin is always amazing. We have that chemistry, we are friends and it showed with the final product. We mostly had fun while creating. We’re both big SpongeBob fans who grew up watching the show, so everything just came out naturally. “

“It was a pleasure working alongside Tainy and an honor to be a part of the project,” J Balvin echoes to Billboard. “Its contagious yet nostalgic beat brought Latino Gang to Bikini Bottom and that is something that I never thought could happen! I’ve always been a fan of SpongeBob SquarePants and I know little Jose would be proud to know that this track hit No. 1.”

Adds Balvin, “Que siga el party bajo el agua!”

Lex BorreroNEON16 president and Tainy’s manager, muses, “It’s not every day that you can collaborate with such a huge brand like the SpongeBob franchise. To have the opportunity and to see the song have success means the world to us. Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon have been great partners in this process and we are excited to share the rest of the soundtrack for this incredible feel-good film.”

“Agua” tops the Latin Airplay chart with 11.2 million audience impressions, up 12%, in the week ending August 30, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data.

The song accompanies Tainy and Balvin’s fellow chart hit “Un Día (One Day),” with Dua Lipa and Bad Bunny.  The collab rises 10-7 on Latin Airplay, up 13% to 6.9 million in reach.

“Agua” concurrently crowns the Latin Pop Airplay chart, where Tainy earns his first leader and Balvin collects his 14th, tying Mana for the third-most No. 1s, after Iglesias (24) and Shakira (19).

On the Hot Latin Songs chart, which blends airplay, streaming and sales data, “Agua” ascends 6-5. Along with its airplay, it drew 3.8 million U.S. streams in the week ending August 27.

Alvaro Diaz Releases Music Video for Cazzu Collaboration “Deportivo”

Alvaro Diaz is getting sporty

The 27-year-old Puerto Rican rapper has joined forces with Cazzu to bring to life the story of a dangerous yet loving relationship in their new “Deportivo” video.

Alvaro Diaz

This isn’t Diaz and Cazzu’s first collaborative effort, but Diaz tells Billboard he’s always been a fan of the Argentine rapper-singer and was looking for the perfect song to collaborate on.

“I proposed this song to her and she immediately said yes,” said Diaz, who is part of NEON16’s management roster. “In less than a month, she added her vocals. We were excited to do the video but then the pandemic hit. I started thinking of ways to make it work, we couldn’t let this win us.”

With lyrics like “God, please take care of her, don’t let her get in trouble” and “she’s not a princess but I’ll build her a castle,” the infectious trap song is about a man who’s in love with a girl that’s no good for him.

“It’s about a girl who’s not normal but she’s still your girl and no one can touch her or criticize her,” Diaz elaborates. “You’re willing to do whatever you want for her and to protect her.”

In the music video, Diaz and Cazzu, portrayed by a model wearing a tablet with the singer’s face on it, are mischievous partners-in-crime. Diaz is clearly in love as Cazzu is doing her thing—robbing banks and breaking into cars, amongst other things.

“I told Cazzu I had this crazy idea for the video and she loved it,” he says. “She did her shots in Argentina and I filmed mine in Puerto Rico. Everything came out neat.”

In addition to “Deportivo,” Diaz says he’s whipping up an important project dubbed Diaz Antes that will include his two EP’s as well as more music.

Tainy Releases New Single “Nada,” Featuring Lauren Jauregui & C. Tangana

Tainyis taking it old-escuela

The 30-year-old Puerto Rican hit-making producer and songwriter captures the essence of the reggaetón he was raised on “Nada,” the just-released single off his forthcoming debut solo EP The Kids That Grew Up On Reggaeton: Neon Tapes.

Tainy

Featuring Lauren Jaureguiand C. Tangana, “Nada” crosses language and genre barriers with Jauregui’s soulful pop vocals filtering Spanish and English lyrics and C. Tangana’s electronically-tinged trap verses.

The song has a sexual flare to it, as both singers reject the notion of marriage but bemoan that they’re giving each other “nada” or nothing with their undefined yet playful relationship.

The Elliot Muscat/The Garden-directed music video is set in Miami, Fla. where Tainy launched his NEON16 studio, showing the city’s raw, yet vibrant landscapes from green palm trees cascading over a vintage red Mercedes Benz that the former Fifth Harmony member rests on to turquoise-colored houses where Tainy kicks back with the guys.

The Kids That Grew Up On Reggaeton: Neon Tapes marks Tainy’s first solo venture after working with the likes of Bad Bunny, J Balvin, Anuel AA, Ozuna and more Latin popstars in his accelerating successful career, spanning 47 Hot Latin Songs entries and a No. 1 producer ranking last year on Billboard‘s Latin Producers chart (dated July 20).

“Nada” marks a pivotal cross-cultural moment in Tainy’s reggaetón speciality, democratizing the Latin urban genre for both mainstream American and Latin artists. “You can’t go too drastic when you’re creating records for the Latin market; it’s about expanding what their ear is used to,” Tainy told Billboard in an interview last month. “The American market has more liberty. Hearing the essence of reggaetón from [his production team] Luny Tunes, but listening to different chords from The Neptunes or how big and full Timbaland‘s percussion sounds [are] and adding those pop and electronic elements [influences my work].”
