Tainy Renews Worldwide Publishing Agreement with Sony Music Publishing

Tainy is staying with Sony…

Sony Music Publishing has renewed its worldwide publishing agreement with the 32-year-old Puerto Rican chart-topping songwriter and producer.

TainyThe deal extends the company’s longstanding relationship with the hitmaker, which began in 2005 when he launched his career in Puerto Rico.

“I am grateful that my career has allowed me to reach new heights not only on the artistic and creative side, but also on the business side,” Tainy (real name Marco Masis) said in a statement. “And I appreciate having such great partners on the publishing end. Excited for the next chapter with the SMP family.”

Since kicking off his career, Tainy has become a go-to collaborator for artists such as Bad Bunny, J Balvin, Zion & Lennox and Wisin & Yandel. Most recently, Tainy produced nine songs on Bad Bunny’s record-breaking album, Un Verano Sin Ti, including “Ojitos Lindos” with Bomba Estéreo and the Rauw Alejandro-assisted “Party.”

In October, Tainy made history by becoming the first person to spend 100 weeks at No. 1 on any of Billboard‘s producers charts thanks to tracks like Bad Bunny’s “Yonaguni,” Bad Bunny and JhayCo‘s “Dákiti” and Kali Uchis‘ “Telepatía.”

“Tainy is one of the leading songwriters, artists, and producers in music today. He also happens to be a fantastic human being – as humble as he is talented. I have seen firsthand how he works with other artists and brings out the best in them, while at the same time adding just the right touch to the production or song to make it a lasting global hit,” added Jorge Mejia, Sony Music Publishing president & CEO, Latin America and U.S. Latin. “As an artist, he continues to rack up success after success. Tainy Becomes First Person to Spend 100 Weeks Atop Any Billboard Producers Charts

Tainy is making Billboard history…

The 32-year-old Puerto Rican record producer and songwriter has entered the history books as the first person to spend 100 weeks at No. 1 on any of Billboard‘s producers charts.

The multi-hyphenate artist (real name: Marco Masis) spends a record-extending 100th week at No. 1 on the Latin Producers survey dated October 9, thanks to his production on seven tracks on the latest Hot Latin Songs chart.

Billboard launched all-genre Hot 100 Songwriters and Hot 100 Producers charts in June 2019, as well as those for country, rock & alternative, R&B/Hip-Hop, R&B, rap, Latin, Christian, gospel and dance/electronic; alternative and hard rock joined in June 2020.

“This milestone is something crazy to me, to see that we actually made it to 100 weeks,” Tainy tells Billboard. “At the end of the day, I am just truly grateful to get to wake up every day and do what I love. It’s amazing to be a part of such an important list with all these talented producers that are working at such high levels making incredible music and pushing our culture forward globally.”

Almost exactly a year ago, Tainy became the first to log 50 weeks atop a producers chart, when he reached the milestone atop Latin Producers.

Of Tainy’s 100 weeks spent at No. 1 on Latin Producers, he’s ruled the past 41 frames consecutively, encompassing every chart week of 2021 so far.

Of the chart’s 120 total weeks to-date, Subelo Neo is the only other name to log double-digit weeks at No. 1, with 10 in March-May 2020. Over the chart’s existence, Tainy is the only producer to have spent every week on the survey. His collaborator Sky Rompiendo follows with 99 weeks, ranking at No. 7 this week.

Tainy scored his first production credit on Hot Latin Songs in 2006, with Tito “El Bambino” El Patron‘s “Caile,” which reached No. 2. He followed that year with his first No. 1, Wisin & Yandel‘s “Pam Pam.” He’s since added five more leaders, all since 2019: Anuel AA, Daddy Yankee, Karol G, Ozuna and J Balvin‘s “China“; J Balvin, Dua Lipa, Bad Bunny and Tainy’s “Un Dia (One Day)“; Bad Bunny and Jhay Cortez‘s “Dákiti“; Kali Uchis‘ “Telepatía“; and Bad Bunny’s “Yonaguni.”

Tainy has also produced three top 10s on the Billboard Hot 100: Cardi B, Bad Bunny and J Balvin’s “I Like It” (No. 1, one week, 2018), “Dákiti” (No. 5, 2020) and “Yonaguni” (No. 10, 2021).

Tainy concurrently places at No. 2 on the Latin Songwriters chart, thanks to his writing credits on “Yonaguni,” “Dákiti,” “In Da Getto,” “Telepatía,” “Ley Seca,” “Una Nota” and “Deja Vu.” He’s spent 17 weeks atop the tally, the second-most after frequent collaborator Bad Bunny (65).

Meanwhile, DannyLux adds a second week at No. 1 on Latin Songwriters, powered by his work on Eslabon Armado‘s “Jugaste y Sufri,” which he wrote solo and on which he’s a featured artist, at No. 7.

The weekly Latin Songwriters and Latin Producers charts are based on total points accrued by a songwriter and producer, respectively, for each attributed song that appears on the Hot Latin Songs chart. As with Billboard’s yearly recaps, multiple writers or producers split points for each song equally (and the dividing of points will lead to occasional ties on rankings).

Make that 50 for Tainy…

The 31-year-old Puerto Rican record producer and songwriter has earned his landmark 50th week at No. 1 on Billboard‘s Latin Producers chart (dated October 10), remaining in charge due to five production credits on the latest Hot Latin Songs chart.

J Balvin Earns 13 Latin Grammy Award Nominations, Including Two for Album of the Year

The Latin Grammy Award nominations have been announced, with the 35-year-old Colombian reggaeton singer leading the pack of nominees with 13 nominations.

J Balvin’s nominations include two for album of the year and two for record of the year (“Rojo” & “China”).

Balvin has a chance to win his first album of the year prize — a category with 10 contenders — thanks to his fifth solo album “Colores” and “Oasis,” his collaborative project with Bad Bunny. Other nominees include Bad Bunny’s sophomore release “YHLQMDLG” as well as albums from Ricky Martin, Carlos Vives, Jesse & Joy, Kany García, Natalia Lafourcade, Camilo and Fito Paez.

Bad Bunny received nine nominations, including two for album of the year (YHLQMDLG & Oasis) and one for record of the year (“Vete”).

Ozuna has eight nominations, including one for record of the year (“China”).

For record of the year, which also has 10 nominees, contenders include popular hip-hop-flavored Latin songs that have dominated the Latin music charts and earned hundreds of millions plays on streaming services, with some even reaching the billion-mark on YouTube, including Karol G and Nicki Minaj’s global hit “Tusa” and “China” by Anuel AA, Daddy Yankee, Karol G, Ozuna, Balvin and Marco Masis. Other nominees include Balvin’s “Rojo” and Bad Bunny’s “Vete.”

“Tusa” is the sole Latin trap nominee in the song of the year category, where 11 tracks are in contention. It’s a departure for Karol G, who didn’t receive a single nomination last year and was part of the group of uber-successful Latin trap and reggaeton artists who were dissed in top categories like album, song and record of the year.

This year, the 29-year-old Colombian performer, who was named best new artist in 2018, has four nominations, including two shared with Minaj. Karol G’s fiance, Puerto Rican rapper-singer Anuel AA, marked a major breakthrough this year as a first-time nominee. He scored seven nominations, including a bid for best new artist.

“Over the last year, we continued engaging in discussions with our members to improve the awards process and actively encouraged diverse Latin music creators to join and participate,” Latin Academy President and CEO Gabriel Abaroa Jr. said in a statement, calling this year’s nominees “a group that reflects the constant evolution of Latin music.”

As a result of last year’s debacle social media exploded as Latin artists posted images of the Grammy logo with a large red “X″ across it, with words on the image reading in Spanish: “Without reggaeton, there’s no Latin Grammys.” Balvin even skipped the live show and Bad Bunny, who won best urban music album during the telecast, told the audience: “With all due respect, reggaeton is part of the Latin culture.”

To honor Latin rap and reggaeton performers, the Latin Grammys added new categories this year, including best reggaeton performance and best rap/hip-hop song.

Balvin’s 13 nominations includes several categories where he will compete with himself: Outside of album and record of the year, he’s a double nominee in the best urban music album, best urban fusion/performance and best reggaeton performance categories. Ozuna and Bad Bunny will also compete with themselves in several categories.

Others who scored multiple nominations include Juanes, Martin, Alejandro Sanz, Camilo, Carlos Vives, Kany García and Residente, the most decorated winner in the history of Latin Grammys. Rosalía, who won album of the year last year and became the first solo female performer to win the top honor since Shakira’s triumph in 2006, earned four nominations this year.

Apart from Minaj’s two nominations, other popular American artists who will compete for awards include rapper Travis Scott (best short form music video for “TKN” with Rosalía); jazz master Chick Corea and his Spanish Heart Band (best Latin jazz/jazz album for “Antidote”); DJ-producer Diplo (best urban song for “Rave de Favela” ); and rapper Tyga (best reggaeton performance for “Loco Contigo” with DJ Snake and Balvin). Justin Bieber’s right-hand songwriter, Jason Boyd aka Poo Bear, earned an album of the year nomination for his work on Jesse & Joy’s “Aire (Versión Día).”

The 21st annual Latin Grammy Awards will air live on November 19 on Univision. The nominees in the 53 categories were selected from more than 18,000 entries. Songs and albums released between June 1, 2019 through May 31, 2020 were eligible for nomination.

Tainy Signs with William Morris Endeavor (WME)

William Morris Endeavor (WME) has announced that the agency will represent the 30-year-old Puerto Rican record producer and songwriter, whose real name is Marco Masis, in all areas worldwide.

Tainy, who continues to be managed by Lex Borreroat Neon16, will work across all departments of the agency to build his business. Billboard hasconfirmed that this is the first time he’s been represented by a talent agency.

After a successful 2019 as an artist, landing at No. 1 on Billboard‘s Latin Producerschart for 26 consecutive weeks, Tainy crowned the year-end Hot Latin Songs Producerschart, followed by DJ Snake, Mambo Kingz and DJ Luian.

His roster includes recent chart-topping hits such as Cardi B’s “I Like It,” “Callaita” in collaboration with Bad Bunny, “Adicto” in collaboration with Anuel AAandOzuna, and “I Can’t Get Enough,” for which he teamed up with Benny Blanco, Selena Gomez and J Balvin. 

Tainy is currently nominated for best Latin rock, urban or alternative album at the 2020 Grammy Awardsfor his work on Bad Bunny’s X 100Preand on J Balvinand Bad Bunny’s joint album Oasis.

Wisin & Yandel Reunite for Yandel’s New Single “Como Antes”

Wisin & Yandel are reuniting… and it sounds so good!

The Puerto Rican reggaeton duo, who took a hiatus as a duo in late 2013, are back together.

Wisin & Yandel, winners of two Latin Grammys and one Grammy, have reunited for Yandel’s new single “Como Antes,” released on Friday, September 8, along with a music video.

On the new single — composed by Yandel, Wisin, Víctor Viera Moore and Marco Masis — “el duo de la historia” goes back to their roots, to their unique sound and street lyrics:

Those elements that have been lost with the evolution of the genre, but made them an iconic urban duo back in the early 2000’s.

“Como Antes” is part of Yandel’s new solo album, titled #Update, and definitely can build a new path for Wisin & Yandel.

On the Billboard charts, the duo currently has ten No. 1 songs on the Hot Latin Songs chart (tied with Maná for the most ever for a duo/group), 21 top 10 songs on the Hot Latin Songs chart (the most ever for a duo/group), and even three hits on the Billboard Hot 100.

Besides the new single, Yandel is also ready to debut #Update on Friday. The set features 14 songs, and includes collabs with Luis Fonsi, Maluma, J Balvin, Zion & Lennox, Ozuna, Becky G, Bad Bunny and Plan B.
