Alejandro Sanz Receives All-Star Welcome to His New Label, Sony Music Latin-Iberia

Alejandro Sanz is getting an all-star welcome at Sony Music Latin-Iberia.

The 54-year-old Spanish award-winning singer-songwriter was serenaded by Kany GarcíaCamilo and Evaluna, among other artists, serenaded  at an event hosted by Sony Music during Latin Grammy Week in Sevilla, Spain, officially welcoming Sanz to his new label.

Alejandro SanzProducer Javier Limón, a close friend of Sanz’s, hosted the event along with Afo Verde, Chairman and CEO of Sony Music Latin-Iberia, and José María Barbat, president of Sony Music Iberia.

“We’re here on an unforgettable night because we have the opportunity to celebrate the arrival of Alejandro Sanz to our great Sony Music family,” said Verde, who signed Sanz to Sony this past June.

”We know the extraordinary artist that’s inside you. We know of your drive and passion for your work, your curiosity for new artists, the support you give those who are starting off, your generosity with your colleagues, your commitment to causes of fairness and the value of your friendship,” added Barbat.

Camilo, Evaluna, Niña Pastori, Kany García, J·Noa, Darumas, Yerai Cortés and Montse Cortés performed some of Sanz’s emblematic songs, including “Amiga Mía” (J Noa), “Cuando nadie me ve” (Kany García) and “Desde cuando” (Camilo y Evaluna).  The honoree enjoyed the evening from a table set in a semi private area, from which he could see the performances.

Other artists, including Malú, Ana Mena, Arde Bogotá, Omar Montes, Reik, Nicki Nicole, Kenia OS and María José Llergo, were also at the event ,which took place in Hacienda Azahares.

This year, Sanz is nominated for a Latin Grammy for song of the year for “Nasa” alongside Camilo, and record of the year for “Correcaminos” with Danny Ocean.

Sanz thanked his “Dear Sony family” for the warm welcome. “It’s been a beautiful night to get together again and begin this new stage, in addition to a prelude to a week where we’ll celebrate music. Let’s enjoy and celebrate!” he said.

Becky G Makes Cameo Appearance in Tainy’s Just Released “La Baby” Music Video

One week after surprising he world with “La Baby,” a new single off Tainy’s upcoming studio album DATA, the Latin hitmaker has brought in a host of celebrity women, including the 26-year-old Mexican American singer, rapper and actress, for the summer-friendly track’s official video, released on Monday.

Becky GIn addition the 26-year-old Mexican American singer/atress, the star-studded music video features Camila Cabello, Lali, Elena Rose, Bad Gyal, Evaluna, RaiNao and PaoPao singing along to the verses from Daddy Yankee, Feid and Sech.

In a 90’s-inspired selfie clip, each artist is seen doing their own respective thing, such as getting ready for a night out (Bad Gyal), working out at the gym (Lali), drinking a morning coffee (Evaluna) or enjoying a late-night drive around town (Elena Rose).

“La Baby” sees Tainy opting for infectious reggaeton with hard-hitting drum beats and lyrics meant to empower and motivate the ladies.

“That kitty is lost/ She doesn’t have an owner/ An architect/ She’s building her dreams/ Everyone I show her off to/ Says she’s hot like a jalapeño,” he sings on his verse.

“Thank you to these incredible women for being a part of it,” Tainy expressed on his Instagram account.

“La Baby” is part of Tainy’s debut solo studio album DATA, slated for a June 29 release. The release also comes on the heels of Tainy unveiling its stacked tracklist including Bad Bunny, Rauw Alejandro, Myke Towers, J Balvin, Arcangel, Kany Garcia, Young Miko and many more.

“[DATA] is a representation of who I am as a person, and as a fan of music,” Tainy previously told Billboard Español. “To be able to have my own album is so special. I’m putting my everything into this, all the knowledge I’ve acquired since I started working with the people I admire.”

Maria Becerra to Receive Visionary Award at Billboard Latin Women in Music Gala

The 23-year-old Argentine singer and former YouTuber will be honored with the Visionary Award at the inaugural Billboard Latin Women in Music gala.

Maria BecerraBecerra will be recognized along with Thalia, Ana Gabriel, Evaluna and Goyo at the two-hour special event taking place at the Watsco Center in Miami on May 6, and airing on Telemundo and Universo on May 7.

The same evening, Shakira will be honored as Latin Woman of the Year.

Becerra, a pop/urban artist who began here career on YouTube in her teens and was nominated for a best new artist Latin Grammy in 2021, has had three entries on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart, including her hit “Qué más pues?” alongside J Balvin, as well as two top 10 hits on Latin Airplay (“Te espero” with Prince Royce, which reached No. 1; and “Extasis” with Manuel Turizo at No. 9).

She’s also placed five tracks on Latin Rhythm Airplay, including three on the top 10 (“Suelta” with Dímelo Flow, Farruko, Rauw Alejandro, Mr. Vegas and Fatman Sccop; “Berlin” with Zion & Lennox; and “Extasis”).

Another icon, Ivy Queen, will host the event alongside actress and host Jacky Bracamontes.

The 46-year-old Colombian global superstar will be honored as Billboard’s Woman of the Year at the first-ever Mujeres Latinas en la Música gala.

Shakira’s honor comes in the wake of an extraordinary year that has seen the superstar break records with the biggest Spanish-language debut of 2022 (“Monotonía” featuring Ozuna). Then, in January 2023, her “Shakira: BZRP Music Sessions #53” debuted at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making her the first woman to reach the top 10 on the chart with a song in Spanish.

Thalia to Be Honored at Inaugural Latin Women in Music Event

The 51-year-old Mexican singer and actress will be among the honorees at the first-ever Latin Women in Music, or Mujeres Latinas En La Música in Spanish.

ThaliaIn addition to the “Amor a la Mexicana” singer, the event will honor ThaliaAna Gabriel, Natti Natasha, Evaluna, Goyo and Emilia MernesBillboard and Telemundo have announced.

The inaugural event will take place May 6 at the Watsco Center in Miami and is set to be co-hosted by reggaeton queen Ivy Queen — who received this year’s Icon Award at Billboard‘s 2023 Women in Music — and television personality Jacqueline Bracamontes.

The two-hour music special, which will air May 7 on Telemundo, will celebrate Latin women artists, executives and creatives who are proactively working for positive change, inclusion and gender parity in the music industry.

“Our Latin Women In Music gala is a bold and inspiring event. Our honorees come from vastly diverse places, generations, styles, genres and philosophies, but all have excellence, commitment and unique and uncompromising artistry and points of view,” said Leila Cobo, Billboard’s chief content officer for Latin/Español. “In this landmark year for Latin music, we are so proud to launch our newest tentpole, where we will celebrate outstanding, powerful, leading women yearly.”

Ana Gabriel will receive the Leyenda Viviente Award. With more than two-dozen albums, the Mexican singer-songwriter has serenaded fans for nearly five decades with cross-genre chart toppers, including 20 top 10 hits and 6 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart.

The awards for the other honorees will be announced soon.

The inaugural Latin Women in Music event was announced earlier this year as an expansion of Billboard’s Women in Music franchise. It aims to celebrate the women who have made a concrete impact on Latin music through their artistic achievements, or through tangible, noteworthy actions that have brought measurable recognition and opportunity to women, effecting positive change to the industry as a whole.

Camilo Earns Third No. 1 on Billboard’s Tropical Airplay Chart with “Pegao”

Camilo has another chart-topper on his hands…

The 28-year-old Colombian singer, musician and songwriter has notched his third No. 1 on Billboard’s Tropical Airplay chart dated Aug. 13 as “Pegao” rises to the top spot in its 11th week.

Camilo“Pegao” climbs from the runner-up rank through a 7% gain in audience impressions, to 5.6 million, earned in the U.S. in the week ending August 7, according to Luminate.

The single ends Manuel Turizo’s one-week command with “La Bachata” (Aug. 6-dated survey), as it drops to No. 2 on the latest chart.

The cumbia villera “Pegao” marks a new career achievement for Camilo’s Tropical Airplay career history, becoming his first champ on a lead role, unaccompanied by any other act. The track was co-written alongside Edgar Barrera with the collaboration of Andres Castro.

“Pegao” follows Camilo’s two-week champ “Baloncito Viejo,” with Carlos Vives (June 11-18-dated lists). Previously, he logged his first champ also through a co-lead collab, “Kesi,” with Shawn Mendes (Aug. 21, 2021).

“Pegao” is the third single from Camilo’s forthcoming third studio album, De Adentro Pa Fuera, set to be released in September. His eponymous worldwide tour, which kicked off on May 26 in Mexico, features some of the set’s already released singles: “Indigo” with Evaluna and “Pesadilla,” both which scored an entry on Latin Pop Airplay (No. 3 and No. 16 high, respectively), and the newly released singles “Nasa” with Alejandro Sanz and “Naturaleza” with Nicki Nicole, which have not yet entered a Billboard chart.

Further, ‘Pegao” moves closer to the top 10 on Latin Airplay, climbing 16-12 in its 10th week.

Camilo Surpasses J Balvin to Become Most-Followed Latin Artist on TikTok

Camilo is a TikTok king…

The Colombian singer-songwriter first started using TikTok in 2019 to promote his Pedro Capó-assisted single “Tutu.” But in March, following the release of his track “Favorito,” he decided to become more active on the platform — and go all-in on dance challenges.

In the span of five months over the course of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Camilo increased his TikTok following by 10 million (his count jumped from 6 million to just over 16 million), surpassing J Balvin to become the most-followed Latin artist on the app.

His secret weapon? His wife, actress-singer Evaluna, 23.

“Whenever he has an idea or before he posts something, he asks for my opinion,” she says. “Everything posted on TikTok is a team effort.” She says that they usually plan a dance challenge long before a single release, dedicating a day to think of the choreography with help from their friend Paula Macher, who has over 1 million TikTok followers herself. “[She] knows all the latest trends and popular dance moves,” says Evaluna. “In the end, it helps push the song we’re promoting.”

Noel Nuez, TikTok’s director of operations for Spanish South America, believes that kind of collaboration has helped Camilo rake in new followers so quickly: “He’s surrounded by family and colleagues who are also well-integrated on TikTok themselves, which enables him to viralize across other top profiles and strengthen cross-profile storytelling.” Nuez says that in addition to “fully leveraging his creator network,” Camilo makes use of the app’s popular visual effects, like greenscreen, to “create a range of different content that incorporates his own music as a key component of the storytelling.”

Plus, Camilo doesn’t shy away from overpromotion, posting the same audioclip and dance challenge back to back to back. “The algorithm in TikTok is super different [from other social media platforms]: It doesn’t saturate your feed, and you don’t see all of my videos unless you enter my profile,” he says. He views each post as a new entry point for fans to reach his page, and so far it’s paying off.

In May, “Favorito” reached No. 25 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart, and Camilo’s collaboration with Rauw Alejandro on “Tattoo (Remix)” peaked at No. 7 on the same chart in September, garnering 64 million on-demand U.S. streams, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data. (On TikTok, the latter track has been tagged to 2.8 million videos, several of which are from Camilo and Evaluna.)

Camilo believes that more than any other strategy though, the driver of his TikTok success is authenticity. “The songs that I post on TikTok and the videos that we share best represent who I am and have a level of engagement [that’s delivered] in a very honest and transparent way,” he says. “Pretending will always lead to failure.”
