Paul Calderón to Star on the Marvel Studios Disney+ Series “Ironheart”

Paul Calderón has ironed out details on his next project…

The 63-year-old Puerto Rican actor has joined the cast of the Marvel Studios Disney+ series Ironheart in an undisclosed role.

The 6-episode series, created by Chinaka Hodge, will star Dominique Thorne as Marvel character Riri Williams, a genius inventor and creator of the most advanced suit of armor since Iron Man.

Previously announced cast also includes Anthony Ramos, Shakira Barrera, Manny Montana, Alden Ehrenreich, Regan Aliyah, Rashida “Sheedz” Olayiwola, Shea Couleé, and Zoe Terakes.

Sam Bailey and Angela Barnes are directing, with Ryan Coogler’s Proximity among the production entities.

Coogler, Ironheart head writer Chinaka Hodge, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian serve as executive producers alongside Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum and Zoie Nagelhout.

Calderón is a writer, actor, and director who most recently appeared in one of the final episodes of NBC’s This Is Us titled “Miguel,” which focused on the character of Miguel Rivas (Jon Huertas).

Additionally, Calderón starred in multiple seasons of Amazon’s Bosch in the role of Detective Jimmy Robertson.

His other notable TV credits include AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead, HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, Hostages for CBS, NBC’s Law & Order, and Miami Vice.

On the big screen, he served as co-writer of Abel Ferrera’s Bad Lieutenant starring Harvey Keitel. Calderón also played a cop in the 1992 film. Film credits also include Sydney Pollack’s The Firm, Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, Cop Land by James Mangold, Steven Soderbergh’s Out of Sight, and Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s 21 Grams.

The U.S. Army veteran who studied acting under the G.I. Bill went on to become a founding member of the LAByrinth Theater Company where he mentored Philip Seymour Hoffman, Sam Rockwell and Lauren Luna Velez, among others.

Jon Huertas Earns Two TV Awards Nominations from Hollywood Critics Association

Jon Huertas has two chances at victory…

The Hollywood Critics Association has revealed its 2022 TV award nominations, with the 52-year-old half-Puerto Rican actor earning two nods.

Huertas is nominated in the Best Supporting Actor in a Broadcast Network or Cable Series, Drama category for his work on NBC’s This Is Us. He’ll compete against Michael Mando in the category; the 40-year-old Mexican-Canadian actor is nominated for his work on “Better Call Saul.”

Huertas is also nominated for Best Directing in a Broadcast Network or Cable Series, Drama for his work behind the lens on “Four Fathers,” an episode of NBC’s This Is Us.

Oscar Isaac has also earned two Hollywood Critics Association nominations…

The 43-year-old Cuban & Guatemalan actor is nominated in the Best Actor in a Broadcast Network or Cable Limited Series, Anthology Series, or TV Movie category for his work on HBO’s Scenes from a Marriage.

Isaac is also up for Best Actor in a Streaming Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his work on Disney+’s Moon Knight.

Selena Gomez has earned two nods: The 29-year-old Mexican American singer/actress is nominated for Best Actress in a Streaming Series, Comedy for her work on Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building; as well as the host/creator/producer of HBO Max’s Selena + Chef, which is up for Best Streaming Reality Show or Competition Series.

Stephanie Beatriz is nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Broadcast Network or Cable Series, Comedy for her work on NBC’sBrooklyn Nine-Nine.

Harvey Guillén is up for Best Supporting Actor in a Broadcast Network or Cable Series, Comedy for his performance on FX’s What We Do in the Shadows.

Rosario Dawson earned a nod for Best Supporting Actress in a Streaming Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her work on Hulu’s Dopesick.

Ariana DeBose is nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Streaming Series, Comedy for her work on AppleTV’s Schmigadoon!

Other Latinx nominees include director Isabel Sandoval and writer Antonio Campos.

The awards will be handed out over two nights in ceremonies at the Beverly Hilton. The broadcast network and cable TV awards ceremony will be held on August 13, followed by the streaming awards ceremony on August 14.

Jon Huertas & His “This Is Us” Mates Launch Somos Nosotros Fund to Support Latinx Students in the Arts

Jon Huertas is helping the next generation of Latinx talent…

The 52-year-old half-Puerto Rican actor and his This Is Us cast mates and the show’s creator are launching a scholarship fund to support Latinx students with big Hollywood dreams.

Huertas, his costars Mandy Moore, Milo Ventimiglia, Sterling K. Brown, Justin Hartley, Chrissy Metz, Chris Sullivan, and Susan Kelechi Watson, as well as series creator Dan Fogelman, have partnered with the art advocacy group Nosotros on the creation of the Somos Nosotros Fund.

It will be used to bolster the quality of inclusion from a creative perspective.

The Latinx-focused scholarship fund is the culmination of a conversation that started over parity late last year when Huertas was given a lower bonus than his costars, This Is Us original cast members offered to pool together a portion of their final season bonuses when fellow series regular Huertas had been given less, an offer which he declined.

Huertas approached Nosotros, founded by Hollywood legend Ricardo Montalbán in 1970, with the idea of starting a scholarship fund because of his deep respect for its history of serving Latino artists.

“The primary directives of the Somos Nosotros fund is to solidify and build on Nosotros’ current initiatives while creating more opportunities to foster Latinx talent,” said Nosotros president Joel M. Gonzales. “The initiation of this fund serves as an inaugural partnership between Huertas and Nosotros where he will serve in a high-visibility Advisory role alongside Nosotros’ already well-established leadership.”

The cast’s generous contributions will be pooled with other donations from organizations like NBC, Netflix, and other endowments.

“We’re going to continue to fundraise every year,” says Huertas. “We’re starting an advisory committee for the fund so we can keep this going for the next 20 or 30 years. It would be nice to reach a point where we won’t need something like this one day but until we do, we as Nosotros will continue to fundraise and contribute to this fund as deeply as we can continue to develop programs and initiatives for the Latinx community which is very important to me.”

In one of its first initiatives, Nosotros is joining AFI in establishing a scholarship for Latinx fellows who enroll in AFI’s writers MFA program. Both Huertas and Gonzales believe that giving new writers the opportunity to earn their MFA, with less burden moving into their career, will give them a leg up to create and write strong, well-developed Latinx characters and stories.

“With the show ending, we really wanted to honor this amazing experience we shared by doing something big. Someone in the cast suggested we could start a charity which got me thinking about the representation of Latinx characters and how we still need a push towards that—with regard to the quality, not the quantity,” Huertas tells Deadline of how the idea for the Fund was born.

“I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we as a cast could give a leg up to the next Latinx writer? Someone who can create compelling stories for Latinx characters, possibly new television shows, who can be writers in writers’ rooms that invest in, protect, and elaborate on Latinx characters.’ They loved the idea and we agreed we should go for it. I’ve worked with Nosotros in the past on other initiatives and knew they would be the perfect partners.”

The Fund announcement arrives ahead of the May 3rd airing of the This Is Us episode titled “Miguel,” where fans finally will learn the backstory of Huertas’ character. The episode is a celebration of Latinidad, as well, the goes beyond what viewers will see on screen.

“Miguel” was written by This Is Us staff writer Jonny Gomez and was directed by Zetna Fuentes.

“Fans can expect to see what shaped Miguel’s life,” he says. “What parts of his life contributed to how he approaches life with the Pearsons, how he treats his wife, and how he represents himself in the family. He hasn’t had the easiest of journeys, which is something people don’t know about him yet. I’m excited for them to be able to look through that window.”

He continued, “We’re going to celebrate him and his Afro-Latinidad, his family, and the diaspora that kind of gets overlooked when you think of Latinx. I love that we got to speak to that on the show. Hopefully, this episode will help people love Miguel all the way around.”

The competition showcases a diverse group of Latinx writers and actors with original monologues and performances from different perspectives of the Latinx/e experience while using universally relatable themes.

The actors were coached by This Is Us director and star, Jon Huertas. Writing judges included Kenan’s Vanessa Ramos and Blindspotting‘s Rafael Casal. Huertas was joined by In the Heights star Melissas Barrera and The Sex Lives of College Girls star Vico Ortiz as acting judges.

“Ya Tu Sabes is a platform where Latinx/e creatives have the opportunity to have their work viewed by network executives and casting directors from the beginning of the competition when one first submits until the end when the finalists are shown,” said Mariana Anaya, Vice-Chair for Nosotros. “I am extremely proud and blown away with the talented writers and actors that joined us this year. Our work and fight for the Latinx/e community is necessary not just today but for generations to come. Congratulations to all of our participants on being part of a movement for representation in the entertainment industry.”

Calderon and Trevino will receive exclusive VIP meetings with talent agencies, casting directors, major network and studio creative executives as well as upper lever series writers and producers, among other prizes.

Yul Vazquez’s Horror Film “Books of Blood” to Open This Year’s Drive-In Edition of LA’s Screamfest Horror Film Festival

Yul Vazquez is bringing the Blood to this year’s Screamfest…

The Screamfest Horror Film Festival has revealed the lineup of films that’ll be featured at this year’s drive-in edition, including the 55-year-old Cuban actor’s latest project Books of Blood.

Vazquez’s latest film, directed by Brannon Braga, will kick off the festival, which runs from October 6-15.

The Hulu original film, based on Clive Barker’s horror anthology, is slated to premiere on the streamer on October 7. Starring Vazquez, Britt Robertson, Anna Friel and Rafi Gavron, the film takes a journey into uncharted and forbidden territory through three tales tangled in space and time.

Meanwhile, Jon Huertas and Isabella Gomez’s social media teen slasher Initiation will also be screened at Screamfest.

The film also stars Lindsay LaVanchy, Froy Gutierrez, Gattlin Griffth, Patrick Walker, James Berardo, Bart Johnson, Shireen Lai, Kent Faulcon, Yancy Butler and Lochlyn Munro.

Initiation, from Screamfest alum Berardo, was recently acquired by Saban Films.

Also among the list of screenings are Thirst, the first-ever Icelandic gay splatter vampire flick, and psychological horror film Sweet River (making its North American debut).

“2020 has been challenging for everyone and certainly not how we planned on celebrating Screamfest’s 20th edition, but we’re thrilled to be able to continue to serve the LA community and give our hardworking filmmakers the premieres they wholeheartedly deserve with our lineup of drive-in titles,” says festival founder Rachel Belofsky. “In this unprecedented, uncharted territory of hosting an entirely drive-in festival, we are honored that these wonderfully frightening films have entrusted Screamfest LA to be their festival home, and we’re excited for the opportunity to showcase the horror and sci-fi genre to LA audiences.”

Jon Huertas Signs with CAA for Representation

Jon Huertas is getting creative…

The 50-year-old Puerto Rican actor has signed with the Creative Artists Agency (CAA) for representation.

Huertas currently stars as Miguel on NBC’s Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG Award-winning family drama This Is Us, which recently had its fall finale and received a three-season renewal earlier this year that would take it through season six.

In addition to This Is Us, Huertas’ credits include his role on Castle as Detective and Army veteran Javier Esposito. He starred on the ABC series for eight seasons. He also appeared in David Simon’s Generation Kill as Sgt. Tony “Poke” Espera. The HBO miniseries shed a unique and streetwise perspective of the 2003 invasion of Iraq. The character hit close to home for Huertas, who is a veteran himself.

Huertas and fellow collaborator Kenny Stevenson recently launched the production shingle WestSide Storiesand will continue to develop content for television and film.

ABC is set to present a week of reunions within its primetime lineup starting October 7, with the 49-year-old Puerto Rican actor part of the roster.

“Cast from the Past” Week will feature reunited cast members and creative teams from iconic TV series and films on the network’s current shows.

On Sunday, October 13, Huertas and Seamus Dever will reunite with their former Castle co-star Nathan Fillion on The Rookie.

Additionally, actors and behind-the-scenes talent from the likes of Crazy Rich Asians, Girlfriends, Blues Brothers 2000, Cheers, Charmed, Wet Hot American Summer, House and The Drew Carey Show will be involved.

Cinema Libre Studio Acquires North American Rights to Esai Morales’ Indie Drama “Imprisoned”

Cinema Libre Studio has acquired the North American distribution rights to Imprisoned, the indie drama starring 56-year-old Puerto Rican actor.

Morales stars alongside Laurence Fishburne, Juana Acosta, Juan Pablo Raba and Edward James Olmosin the Paul Kampf-directed film.

Imprisoned was filmed entirely in Puerto Rico in 2017, and was among the last productions to shoot before Hurricane Mariahit and devastated the island.

Cinema Libre will now return the film there for its world premiere on September 10, followed by a 15-theater rollout on the island September 12.

The film will be released in select cities in the U.S. beginning September 13.

“It was important for us to hold theImprisonedpremiere in Puerto Rico, as the film has a powerful Latin cast including Juan Pablo Raba, Juana Acosta, Jon Huertas, Esai Morales and Edward James Olmos,” Kampf said. “Imprisoned was the last project filmed on the island before hurricane Maria hit in 2017 and we are proud to support and celebrate the revival of this special location.”

In the thriller, Raba plays Dylan Burke, who attempts to move on from his former life as a criminal with his true love Maria (Acosta). He soon realizes his past will continue to haunt him when he learns the new local prison warden, Daniel Calvin (Fishburne), has not forgiven him for a previously committed crime. Calvin frames him for a murder he didn’t commit, landing him back in jail. When the prison erupts into a riot, they are forced to make a choice between righteousness and revenge.

Equitas Entertainment Partnersproduced the film, and as part of their social impact aims included more than 30 formerly incarcerated and a dozen currently incarcerated men as part of the production. Eight of the current inmates will receive a pass to leave the jail and attend the premiere.

Anthony Ramos Among a Slew of Latino Actors to Earn First-Ever SAG Awards Nominations

It’s a special first for Anthony Ramos…

The 25th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations have been revealed, with the 27-year-old Puerto Rican actor earning his first-ever nod.

Ramos, a Grammywinner for his work on the Hamilton soundtrack, and his A Star is Born co-stars, including Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, are nominated in the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture category.

Ramos, who starred in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway musicals Hamilton and In The Heights, portrays Ramon in the film. click here to know more about him.

But Ramos isn’t the only first-time nominee…

Michael Mando picked up his first SAG Awards nomination in the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series category.

The 37-year-old Mexican-Canadian actor is nominated along with his Better Call Saul cast mates. He portrays Nacho Varga on the AMC series.

Mando is competing against fellow first-time nominees Alexis Bledel and first-time nominee Jon Huertas.

The 37-year-old Latina actress is nominated alongside her The Handmaid’s Tale co-stars; Bledel portrays Ofglen/Emily on the series.

Huertas is nominated alongside his This Is Us co-stars.The 49-year-old Puerto Rican actor portrays Miguel Rivas on the series. He became a main cast member in the show’s second season.

Shakira Barrera has earned her first SAG Awards nod…

The 28-year-old Nicaraguan-American actress and her GLOW co-stars are nominated in the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series category. Barrera, a newcomer in season two, portrays Yolanda Rivas on the Netflix series.

Antonio Banderas has earned his first nod.

The 58-year-old Spanish actor is nominated in the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series for portraying Pablo Picasso in National Geographic’s Genius: Picasso

Meanwhile, Penelope Cruz, a four-time SAG Awards nominee, has earned her first nod in the television category.

The 44-year-old Spanish actress is nominated in the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series category for portraying Donatella Versace on FX’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.

The SAG Awards will take place on January 27 at the Shrine Auditorium, simulcast live by Turner’s TNT and TBS. As previously announced, Alan Alda will receive the guild’s Life Achievement Award during the ceremony.

Ana Isabelle Starring in the Indie Thriller “Imprisoned”

Ana Isabel is getting imprisoned…

The 31-year-old Puerto Rican actress and singer, whose full name is Ana Isabel Acevedo Avilés, will star in the indie thriller Imprisoned, according to Variety.

Ana Isabel joins a cast that includes Laurence Fishburne, Juan Pablo Raba, Juana Acosta, Jon Huertas, Esai Morales and John Heard.

Paul Kampf is directing from his own script, described as a revenge thriller wrapped around a love story with the question of the sacrifices made for love. Fishburne is playing the local prison warden. Raba and Acosta play a couple and Ana Isabel portrays her daughter — a young woman who never knew her father.

The film is scheduled to begin production in May in Puerto Rico.

Ana Isabel released her first album, Por El Amor, in 2007. She won Univision’s reality show Viva el Sueño in 2009.

Her acting resume includes having the lead role in five episodes of Decisiones Puerto Rico and minor roles in the movies Yellow, El Cantante and Talento de Barrio.
