Make that two chart-toppers in a row for Maluma

The 24-year-old Colombian urban singer/songwriter has earned his second consecutive No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart.

Maluma

Maluma’s latest album F.A.M.E. debuts atop the list dated June 2.

It earns the biggest week of the year for a Latin album by a solo artist in both units and traditional album sales, and the second-biggest week of 2018 overall. The title was released on May 18 through Royalty World/Sony Music Latin.

F.A.M.E. starts with 15,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending May 24 (with 7,000 of that sum in traditional album sales), according to Nielsen Music.

In terms of the biggest weeks for Latin albums in 2018, F.A.M.E.’s opening trails only the No. 1 debut frame of CNCO’s self-titled album both in units and sales (16,000 units, 13,000 sales; chart dated April 21).

F.A.M.E. follows Maluma’s previous leader, and last album, Pretty Boy Dirty Boy, which topped the chart in 2015. It bowed with 15,000 units earned in its first week, of which 2,000 were in traditional album sales.

Pretty Boy Dirty Boy has earned, in total, 222,000 equivalent album units, of which 27,000 are in album sales.

It’s a big week for Maluma on the charts, as F.A.M.E.’s third single “El Prestamo” also arrives in the penthouse on the Latin Airplay chart. It lifts 6-1 in its 10th week on the list with 20 million in audience impressions in the week ending May 27 — up 74 percent. It earns Maluma his eighth No. 1 and second leader of the year.

Maluma Readying for English-Language Crossover with Next Album

Maluma is looking to conquer America…

Already one of the biggest names in Latin music, The 23-year-old Colombian singer is hoping to cross over to a wider audience with an upcoming album of Spanish and English music.

Maluma

Maluma has already collaborated with some of Latin music’s most successful cross over talents, like Shakira and Ricky Martin.

“I’m trying to find the balance and do like, ‘Spanglish’ music or some songs in Spanish and others in English or do a translation,” Maluma told Reuters at the end of his U.S. tour in Los Angeles.

Maluma’s second album, Pretty Boy, Dirty Boy, was released in 2015 and became his breakout record, with hit singles “Borro Cassette” and “Sin Contrato.”

So far, his Spanish music has already earned him a legion of fans on social media. Maluma, whose real name is Juan Luis Londono Arias, is the most-followed Latin male artist on Instagram with more than 22 million fans.

“That connection that I have with my fans is really special and every time when I have moments, when I have free time, the only thing that I think about is what I’m going to post, what I’m going to say to my fans,” he said.

“I think that’s the key to being a success right now,” he added.

It was Maluma’s social media presence that brought him to the attention of pop star Selena Gomez, whom Maluma invited to collaborate on a new song.

“I found out that she was following me and I tried to be in touch with her to make some music but we can’t do it … maybe because she’s a busy girl and me too, I’m a really busy man, and maybe next time we can do something,” he said.

Maluma’s world tour next takes him to Mexico, Brazil and Argentina.

“I have a lot of surprises in store,” Maluma teased of his upcoming shows, although he remained tight-lipped about whether any special guest stars might join him on stage.

“I like to prepare each tour in a different way. Now that I’m heading to Mexico, I’m preparing something special for my fans in Mexico.”

Maluma Takes Top Two Spots on Billboard’s Latin Airplay Chart

Maluma is celebrating two concurrent hits…

The Colombian singer has become only the sixth act to concurrently hold the No. 1 and No. 2 spots on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart as “Sin Contrato” soars 7-1 on the February 11-dated chart.

At the same time, the singer remains at No. 2 as a featured act on Shakira’s “Chantaje” for a third straight week.

At 23-years-old, he’s the youngest artist to rule the top two spots on the chart, and the first to do so since 2011.

Before Maluma, the youngest artist to conquer the No. 1 and No. 2 spots was Alejandro Fernandez, who at 25 ruled the chart for two straight weeks in January of 1998 with “En El Jardin,” featuring Gloria Estefan, at No. 1, while “Si Tu Supieras” was No. 2.

Selena spent the most weeks holding both top spots. Beginning four months after the Tejano superstar died, she spent six non-consecutive weeks at the top with “Tu Solo Tu” and “I Could Fall In Love,” between July and September in 1995. She would have been 24-years-old.

The most recent artist to achieve the feat was Pitbull on the October 15, 2011-dated list. He crowned the chart with “Rain On Me,” featuring Marc Anthony, while “Give Me Everything,” featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer, held the No. 2 slot.

The other acts to simultaneously hold the top two spots are Juan Luis Guerra and Juanes.
