Grupo Frontera Appears on Billboard Hot 100 for First Time with Cover of Morat’s “No Se Va”

Grupo Frontera has joined an elite club…

Five weeks ago, the Latino group appeared on a Billboard chart for the first time, Now the act is officially a Billboard Hot 100 hitmaker with its cover of Morat’s “No Se Va.”

Grupo FronteraThe song, which the group released independently, debuts at No. 99 with 4.8 million U.S. streams (up 43%) and 1,000 downloads sold (up 278%) in the September 23-29 tracking week, according to Luminate.

It concurrently jumps 28-15 on Hot Latin Songs and 18-3 on Latin Digital Song Sales and debuts at No. 15 on Latin Streaming Songs.

Helping the song’s surge in popularity, a snippet of it has been used in more than 130,000 clips on TikTok.

Colombian folk-pop group Morat released its initial recording of the song in 2019, although the track has not appeared on any Billboard charts. The group has earned one Hot Latin Songs hit: “Sé Que Te Duele,” with Alejandro Fernandez (No. 49 peak, 2017).

“No Se Va” became Grupo Frontera’s first Billboard chart entry when it debuted at No. 12 on the Regional Mexican Digital Song Sales survey dated September 3; the song spends a second week at No. 1 on the latest list.

The song also helps the group rise 49-24 on the Emerging Artists chart.

Notably, “No Se Va” is just the fifth Regional Mexican song to reach the Hot 100 in the chart’s 64-year history, a distinction that began with Christian Nodal and Gera MX’s “Botella Tras Botella” in May 2021 (peaking at No. 60). Ivan Cornejo’s “Está Dañada” became the second regional Mexican song to reach the Hot 100 last October (No. 61), followed by Grupo Firme’s “Ya Superame (En Vivo Desde Culiacan, Sinaloa)” in November (No. 91) and Yahritza y Su Esencia’s “Soy El Unico” this April (No. 20).

Bad Bunny Wins Big at the 2022 Billboard Latin Music Awards

Bad Bunny is a Billboard darling…

With nine wins — including artist of the year, tour of the year and songwriter of the year — the 28-year-old Puerto Rican superstar was the big winner at the 2022 Billboard Latin Music Awards.

Bad BunnyBad Bunny, who has been breaking attendance and chart records, also took home top Latin album of the year and top Latin rhythm album of the year for Un Verano Sin Ti, the longest-running album at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 so far this year, as well as Hot Latin Songs and Top Latin Albums artist of the year, male and tropical song of the year for “Volví.”

Following Bad Bunny in sheer number of wins was Farruko with his juggernaut hit “Pepas,” which won the coveted Hot Latin Song of the Year award, as well as sales, streaming and Latin rhythm song of the year.

Karol G was the top female artist of the awards, winning Hot Latin Songs and Top Latin Albums artist of the year, female, while “Mamiii,” her collaboration with Becky G, won Hot Latin Song of the year, vocal event.

Rauw Alejandro and regional Mexican stars Grupo Firme and Eslabón Armado all took home two awards each, as did 18-year-old Mexican newcomer Iván Cornejo, who won the very important new artist of the year award.

The producer of the year award once again went to Tainy.

While Bad Bunny may have dominated the charts, the list of winners represented a vast array of Latin genres and artists ranging from icons to newcomers, including Rosalía, Wisin y Yandel, Romeo Santos and Christian Nodal.

Finalists and winners were celebrated live at the Billboard Latin Music Awards, which aired on the Telemundo network from the Watsco Center in Miami.

Billboard Latin Music Awards is the only awards show to honor the most popular albums, songs and performers in Latin music as determined by Billboard‘s renowned weekly charts.

Finalists, and eventual winners, reflect performance of new recordings on Billboard‘s albums and songs charts during a one-year period, from the rankings dated August 14, 2021, through the August 6, 2022, charts. Determinations are based on key fan interactions with music, including album and digital song sales, streaming, radio airplay and touring, tracked by Billboard and its data partner, Luminate.

Alejandro Fernández Earns Fifth No. 1 on Billboard’s Regional Mexican Airplay Chart with La Arrolladora-Collaboration “Nunca Dudes En Llamarme”

There’s no doubt Alejandro Fernández knows how to create hit music…

The 51-year-old Mexican singer, nicknamed El Potrillo, has reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Regional Mexican Airplay chart with “Nunca Dudes En Llamarme,” his collaboration with La Arrolladora Banda El Limón de Rene Camacho.

Alejandro Fernandez,The track rises from No. 3 to the summit on the chart dated September 17.

“Nunca Dudes En Llamarme” takes the Greatest Gainer honors of the week boosted by a 35% gain in audience impressions, to 6.54 million, earned in the U.S. in the week ending Sept. 11, according to Luminate.

The new champ, released July 15 via UMLE, reaches the penthouse in its eighth week on the chart, after its top 20 debut (at No. 16 on the July 30-dated ranking).

“Nunca Dudes En Llamarme” gives La Arrolladora its 17th No. 1 among 45 chart appearances. The band concurrently enters a tie with Intocable for the fourth-most.

Meanwhile, Fernández scores his first champ in over a year – his fifth in total. He clocked his last No. 1 through another team-up: “Duele,” with Christian Nodal, in April 2021.

Elsewhere, “Nunca Dudes En Llamarme” takes La Arrolladora to the upper region on the all-genre Latin Airplay ranking with a 13-8 lift.

With the move, the Sinaloans claim their 22nd top 10, the fifth-most among regional Mexican acts. Plus, Fernández captures his 21st, also the fifth-most among Latin pop acts.

La Maquinaria Norteña Earns First No. 1 on Any Billboard Radio Chart with “50 y Cincuenta”

It’s a special first for La Maquinaria Norteña…

The Mexican American band has scored its first No. 1 on a Billboard radio chart as “50 y Cincuenta” ascends from No. 3 to rule the Regional Mexican Airplay chart dated Aug. 20.

“50 y Cincuenta,” released via Azteca/Fonovisa/UMLE on June 10, arrives at the summit in its ninth week.

It evicts Christian Nodal’s “Vivo En El 6,” which falls to No. 5 after its three-week reign, with a 7% gain in audience impressions, to 6.1 million, earned in the U.S. in the week ending August 14, according to Luminate.

“We are extremely grateful for the support of our fans,” the band tells Billboard. “The excitement is as great and as it is gratifying when one of our songs becomes so popular it reaches No. 1 on a Billboard chart.”

While La Maquinaria claim their first radio No. 1, the band secured its first champ almost a decade ago, when the album Vives En Mi debuted and peaked atop the Regional Mexican Albums chart in 2013.

“50 y Cincuenta,” composed by Keith Nieto, Cesar Valdivia and Alfaro Aylín, is the first single from the group’s forthcoming EP, Al Derecho y Al Reverso, slated for a November release. Plus, the new champ lands amidst La Maquinaria Norteña’s eponymous 2022 24-date tour, which kicked off July 1 in San Pedro de Chiautzingo, Mexico.

“50” also gives the New Mexico-based group its first No. 1 in its 26th visit to the chart. The band’s maiden appearance, “Ayer y Hoy,” reached the top 40 in 2011. La Maquinaria has since clocked 11 top 10s, including “Con Honor a Ti,” featuring Grupo Firme, in 2020 and “Amores Van y Vienen,” with La Nueva Estrategia,” in January (both reached No. 6, their previous highest-charting songs until “50 y Cincuenta” climbed higher).

“Thanks to our team for their professionalism,” the group add. “Without you our growth as a band wouldn’t be possible.”

For Nieto, “50” concurrently grants him his first leader as a producer on Regional Mexican Airplay. He clocked a No. 5 through La Fiera de Ojinaga’s “En Otro Canal” in October 2020.

While La Maquinaria reaches a new level of recognition with its first win among regional Mexican stations, “50” also gifts the group its highest-charting entry on the all-genre Latin Airplay chart, pushing 11-9; also its first top 10 since its maiden visit in 2013. Previously the group notched a No. 17 with “Con la Boca Abierta” in 2019.

Christian Nodal Earns 14th No. 1 on Billboard’s Regional Mexican Airplay Chart with “Vivo En El 6”

The 23-year-old Mexican singer has extended his record for the most No. 1s on Billboard’s Regional Mexican Airplay chart as his latest single “Vivo En El 6” rises from No. 4 to rule the July 30-dated survey.

Christian Nodal,“Vivo En El 6” leads with 8.1 million in audience impressions, up 32%, earned in the U.S. in the week ending July 24, according to Luminate.

“Vivo En El 6” ensures Nodal’s unbroken record of chart-toppers among solo acts on Regional Mexican Airplay with 14 No. 1s. Gerardo Ortiz, with 11, has the second-most No. 1s. Among all acts, Calibre 50 continues to lead with 22 champs.

As “Vivo” jumps 4-1, it captures the week’s Greatest Gainer honor within the 40-deep title ranking.

With its growing airplay performance, Nodal enters a tie with Ortiz for the third-most top 10s among regional Mexican solo performers, trailing Marco Antonio Solis’ 27 leaders and Alejandro Fernández’s 20.

Yahritza y Su Esencia Sign Worldwide Deal with SESAC Latina

Yahritza Martinez and her brothers are taking their music career to greater heights…

The 15-year-old Mexican singer and her siblings Jairo and Armando Martinez, best known by their group name Yahritza y Su Esencia, have signed a worldwide deal with SESAC Latina.

“We are very excited to welcome Yahritza y Su Esencia to the SESAC Latina family,” Celeste Zendejas, vice president, SESAC Latina, said in a statement. “Their debut single premiered at number one on the Hot Latin Songs Billboard chart, and they are growing into a cultural phenomenon in the Mexican genre. We are honored to be part of their continued success.”

To mark the beginning of their new deal with the performance-rights organization, Yahritza Y Su Esencia — who are signed to indie label Lumbre Music — took the stage to perform “Enamorado” and “Soy El Único” during the 2022 SESAC Latina Music ceremony on June 29.

Yahritza y Su EsenciaTheir partnership with SESAC Latina comes on the heels of the trio’s unprecedented success, which has catapulted them to the top of the Billboard charts.

Earlier this year, the self-taught musicians made history with the sad sierreño anthem “Soy El Unico” as the track scored a No. 20 entry on the Billboard Hot 100, making lead singer Yahritza the youngest Latin performer to enter the all-genre tally.

Additionally, “Soy El Único,” penned by Yahritza at age 13, debuted at No. 1 on the Hot Latin Songs chart dated April 9.

“I don’t write my songs specifically for anyone. I just observe what’s going on around me and I get ideas from it,” she previously told Billboard.

In April, the group — which hails from Yakima, Wash. — dropped their five-track EP, Obsessed, which peaked at No. 1 on Billboard‘s Regional Mexican Albums chart. According to a press release, Yahritza Y Su Esencia is currently working on a full album, set to drop “later this year.”

J Balvin & Karol G Lead Pack of Premios Juventud Nominees with 11 Nods Each

The 2022 Premios Juventud nominations have been revealed, with the 37-year-old Colombian singer and rapper and the 31-year-old Colombian singer-songwriter each earning 11 nods.

J Balvin, Karol GJ Bavin and Karol G are followed by nine-time nominee Rauw Alejandro and Farruko with eight.

Balvin, Karol, Farruko and Rauw Alejandro are up for the coveted album of the year prize, alongside Sebastian Yatra, Justin Quiles, Daddy Yankee, Camilo, Rosalia and Natti Natasha.

Other top nominees include Angela Aguilar, Camilo and Grupo Firme with seven nominations each, followed by Anitta, Christian Nodal, El Alfa, Maluma and Rosalia with six nominations each.

Celebrating the trendiest artists in Latin entertainment, 31 awards will be handed out to music stars, actors and fashionistas.

This year, 10 new categories have been added: female artist – on the rise, male artist – on the rise, my favorite actor, my favorite actress, best onscreen couple, my favorite streaming artist, best couple song, tropical hit, the best beatmakers, and best fandom.

Fans have until June 27 to vote at PremiosJuventud.com.

In addition to the nominees, Univision unveiled bachata crooner Prince Royce, Grupo Firme’s Eduin Caz, Mexican pop star Danna Paola, and Dominican TV personality Clarissa Molina as the ceremony’s co-hosts.

The 2022 Premios Juventud will air live at 7:00 pm ET on Thursday, July 21, from the Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot in San Juan, Puerto Rico, via Univision.

Yahritza y Su Esencia Among the Latinx Acts Named to Billboard’s 21 Under 21 List

Yahritza Martinez has proven she is one to watch…

The 15-year-old Mexican American singer and her brothers, who make up the act Yahritza y Su Esencia, have been named to Billboard’s 21 Under 21 list, Billboard’s annual celebration of some of the most exciting and successful young artists in the music industry including Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish and more.

Last month, Yahritza became the youngest Latin performer to enter the Billboard Hot 100 chart with “Soy El Unico.”

To date, Yahritza and her brothers have notched 52.9 million streams.

But Yahritza y Su Esencia aren’t the only Latinx act to make this year’s list.

Eslabon Armado, consisting of Brian Tovar, Pedro Tovar, Ulises Gonzalez and Damian Fidel Pacheco, have released four consecutive chart-topping albums over the past two years — all of which hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Regional Mexican Albums chart.

The band took a longer-than-usual break before releasing its latest album, Nostalgia, on May 5. During that time, the group added new members Gonzalez and Pacheco.

“Releasing back-to-back albums was good for our career, but we decided to take a break writing new music so that we could come back stronger,” the Mexican-American sierreño group says. “Our biggest challenge as young artists is staying relevant and creating music that connects with our fans.”

Ángela Aguilar is being heralded for logging 240.1 million streams in her young career.

The 18-year-old Mexican American singer, the daughter of Pepe Aguilar, says she “had been working with my parents’ record label all my life,” having signed to Machín Récords herself in 2012.

Nearly a decade later, in 2020, she scored her first No. 1 on Billboard’s Regional Mexican Airplay chart with the Christian Nodal-assisted single “Dime Cómo Quieres.”

Aguilar says the biggest benefit of being a young artist is “the ability to DM someone about a collaboration.”

Earlier this year, she scored her second No. 1 on the chart with “Ahí Donde Me Ven.”

The Latin Grammy nominee is eager to explore acting, like her father has, and says some of his best career advice includes being “respectful of your craft and the public — to keep your roots well-embedded in your heart.”

Tiago PZK has notched 7.1 million streams.

The 20-year-old Argentine singer and rapper was only 6 years old when he discovered his passion for music, thanks to Daddy Yankee’s 2007 song “Impacto (Remix)” (featuring Fergie).

Tiago PZK (who also cites Justin Bieber as inspiration) has since created his own fusion of R&B, reggaetón and alternative rock, best heard on his five Billboard Global 200 hits: “Además de Mi,” “No Me Conocen,” “Entre Nosotros,” “Salimo de Noche” and “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 48.”

In 2021, the artist born Tiago Uriel Pacheco signed a worldwide publishing agreement with Sony Music Publishing U.S. Latin and, this year, a record deal with Warner Music Latina (through a partnership with indie Grand Move Records). Looking ahead, he says he’s most excited to tour: “It will make me travel the world and strengthen me mentally.”

DannyLux has garnered 4.8 million streams.

The 18-year-old Chicano alt-rocker is a self-taught musician who hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Songwriters chart at just 17 years old thanks to his work on Eslabon Armado’s “Jugaste y Sufrí” (off the band’s third album, Corta Venas).

The sierreño artist has since signed a record deal with Warner Music Latina (in partnership with his indie label, VSP Music) and released his ultra-melancholic album, Perdido Sin Ti. He’s already working on new music because, as he says, consistency is key. “Since I’m young, I have so much time to grow up to be the best artist I can be,” he says, citing Bad Bunny’s career as an inspiration because “he never gave up.”

The Linda Lindas, comprised of Mila de la Garza, Eloise Wong, Lucia de la Garza and Bela Salazar, have logged 6.9 million streams.

The all-girl group broke out onto the scene with their viral hit “Racist, Sexist Boy,” which they performed live from the L.A. Public Library.

Christian Nodal is live with new music… 

The 23-year-old Mexican singer-songwriter has released the new single “Vivo en el 6.”

Written by Nodal alongside producer and composer Édgar Barrera and singer-songwriter Edén Muñoz, the song centers on a man who has given up on love and is ready to accept the single life.

“I bid farewell to love because it doesn’t work/From now on I’ll be friends with alcohol and loneliness,” Nodal powerfully sings.

Karol G Wins Big at Latin American Music Awards with Six Trophies

Karol G is this year’s Latin AMAs darling…

The 31-year-old Colombian singer proved to be the biggest winner at the seventh annual Latin American Music Awards, earning six awards at the ceremony that celebrates the best of Latin music.

Karol GKarol G took home the most coveted award of the night, Artist of the Year. She also prevailed as Female Artist of the Year and Favorite Urban Artist.

Her third studio album, KG0516, was voted Album of the Year and Favorite Urban Album, and she picked up a Favorite Collaboration Award for her track “Makinón,” with Miami native Mariah Angelique.

Bad Bunny, who came into the ceremony as the most-nominated artist, followed close behind with five awards.

The 28-year-old Puerto Rican artist’s five awards included Song of the Year, Favorite Male Artist and Favorite Urban Song for his multiplatinum single “Dákiti,” with Jhay Cortez.

He also nabbed the award for Favorite Tropical Song “Volví,” and Viral Song of the Year for “AM.”

Argentine singer María Becerra, whose debut album Animal was released last summer, won Best New Artist.

This year’s Latin AMAs were hosted by Jacqueline Bracamontes, Rafael Amaya and Cristián de la Fuente and broadcast on Telemundo from the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

Latin AMAs voting is fan-driven with nominations based on streaming, sales, airplay and social activity tracked by Billboard from February 6, 2021 through January 29, 2022.
