Bad Bunny Leads Pack of Billboard Latin Music Awards Finalists with 22 Nominations

Bad Bunny is celebrating a banner year…

The 27-year-old Puerto Rican Latin trap and reggaeton superstar leads the list of finalists for the 2021 Billboard Latin Music Awards – with a bullet!

Bad Bunny

Bad Bunny earned a whopping 22 nods in 13 categories, including artist of the year, songwriter of the year, Hot Latin Songs artist of the year, top Latin rhythm album and top Latin album of the year — with three of his releases up for awards.

It’s a stellar showing that caps an incredible year for Bad Bunny, who was able to place three albums — El Último Tour del Mundo, YHLQMDLG and Las Que No Iban a Salir — atop the Billboard charts during the eligibility period for the awards (Feb. 1, 2020, through the Aug. 7, 2021, charts).

Following Bad Bunny in the double digits is Maluma with 11 nods, including artist of the year and Hot Latin Songs artist of the year, with his global hit “Hawái” up for six awards, including airplay song of the year and Hot Latin Song of the year.

Other multi-finalists include J Balvin with nine nods, and Karol GAnuel AA and Black Eyed Peas with eight each.

Finalists and winners will be honored at the annual Billboard Latin Music Awards, which will broadcast live on Telemundo from the Watsco Center in Miami on Thursday, Sept. 23, and which will cover 59 categories across the major music genres of Latin pop, tropical, Latin rhythm and regional Mexican.

Balvin and Anuel AA are both up for artist of the year in a category that also includes fellow reggaetón star Ozuna, who is up for seven awards. Balvin also garnered four nods for “Ritmo (Bad Boys for Life),” the blockbuster track with Black Eyed Peas, who are also four-time finalists with “Ritmo.”

Fellow Colombian Karol G is a four-time finalist for her smash “Tusa” (with Nicki Minaj), while Anuel is up for Hot Latin Songs artist of the year and Top Latin Albums artist of the year, primarily on the strength of his sophomore album, Emmanuel.

But while urban music continued to drive the beat of Latin music, regional Mexican music wasn’t far behind, thanks to a new crop of acts who are revamping the genre’s sound and branding.

Leading the way is the group Eslabon Armado with seven nods that include three of their albums: Corta Venas, Tu Veneno Mortal and Vibras de Noche. They’re followed by Banda MS de Sergio Lizárraga with four nods, including song of the year for “Que Maldición,” and Los Dos Carnales, who are up for three awards, including regional Mexican song of the year, where they compete against themselves with “El Envidioso” and “Cabrón y Vago.”

Beyond the growing strength of regional Mexican, another highly visible trend in this year’s list of finalists is mainstream music’s growing interest in Latin acts. The leaders of the pack are the Black Eyed Peas, whose album Translation featured mostly Latin acts, and which has two tracks, “Mamacita” and “Ritmo,” up for awards in addition to the Peas’ nod in the crossover artist of the year category. In addition, The Weeknd has seven nods on the strength of “Hawái,” his collaboration with Maluma; Minaj has six on the strength of “Tusa” alongside Karol G; and Snoop Dogg is a finalist for regional Mexican song of the year for “Que Maldición,” his collaboration with Banda MS de Sergio Lizárraga.

The Billboard Latin Music Awards were not immune to the COVID-19 pandemic. Eligibility for the awards, whose finalists and eventual winners are based exclusively on performance on the Billboard charts, was extended from its usual one-year period to 18 months (from the rankings dated Feb. 1, 2020, through the Aug. 7, 2021, charts), as the 2020 awards were delayed by the pandemic.

And this year, given the pause in touring of the past 18 months, there is no touring category.

But there is a live awards show that will be broadcast once again on the Telemundo network at 8:00 pm ET and preceded by the red carpet one-hour preshow “La Alfombra de Premios Billboard.” The music special will also broadcast simultaneously on Spanish entertainment cable network Universo and throughout Latin America and the Caribbean on Telemundo Internacional.

Ovy on the Drums Renews Global Publishing Deal with Kobalt Music Group

Ovy on the Drums isn’t going anywhere…

The Colombian artist, producer and songwriter, whose real name is Daniel Echavarria Oviedo, has renewed his global publishing deal with Kobalt Music Group.

Ovy on the Drums“They’ve always believed in me,” Ovy, who first signed with Kobalt in December of 2017, tells Billboard. “The first time Kobalt got me many opportunities and was on top of my project. They are an incredible publisher and that’s why I keep firm with them.”

The renewal deal includes a full range of creative, sync, and administration services for his catalog and future works.

“Kobalt is very transparent in the way they look at revenue and that gives me a lot of security,” he notes, saying he’s excited to continue growing his brand. “I feel that my sound has a lot to offer and with Kobalt, I will be able to work with big artists on the anglo side.”

Nestor Casonu, president of Kobalt Music Latin America, says he’s thrilled to be extending his relationship with the Colombian hitmaker.

“I personally feel very proud to have had the opportunity to witness Ovy’s impressive talent and trajectory not only as a producer but also as a songwriter and artist whose success continues to unfold,” he expressed in a press statement. “It brings us great joy to believe in an artist from the beginning and that feeling multiplies when admiring their continued success, of which we are very proud. We look forward to continuing to support Ovy as his star continues to rise.”

The artist-producer is behind some of Latin’s biggest titles including Paulo Londra’s breakthrough hit “Adan y Eva,” Piso 21 and Micro TDH’s viral track “Te Vi,” and Karol G’s “Tusa” in collaboration with Nicki Minaj.

“Tusa,” which won Song Of The Year at the 2021 ASCAP Latin Awards, also became the first song to debut at No. 1 on the Hot Latin Songs chart in 2019, and the first song by a female act in a lead role to bow at No. 1 since 2016, when Shakira‘s “Chantaje,” featuring Maluma, bowed atop the list.

“He is able to produce with new and developing artists and turn them into megastars with his trademark sound heard all over the world,” Leslie Ahrens, svp creative, Kobalt Music, noted. “We believed in Ovy from the very beginning of his career and are proud to be part of his successful journey along with his manager Stephanie Chopurian for many more years to come.”

Up next, Ovy revealed that he’s beginning to work on Karol G’s fourth studio album, finalizing Micro TDH’s sophomore set, producing for Myke Towers, collaborating with Becky G on the artist side, and thanks to connections at Kobalt, he’s also working with Enrique Iglesias.

“Incredible things are coming,” he assures.

Maluma’s “Borro Cassette” Enters YouTube’s Billion Views Club

It’s Lucky No. 7 for Maluma

The 27-year-old Colombian singer/songwriter’s “Borro Cassette” has crossed the one billion views mark on YouTube, scoring Maluma his seventh entry in the Billion Views Club.

Maluma x Quay

Released in 2015, the track was part of Maluma’s chart-topping Pretty Boy, Dirty Boy album, which peaked at No. 1 on BillboardTop Latin Albums Chart dated November 20, 2015. “Borro Cassette” spent 40 weeks on the Hot Latin Songs chart, peaking at No. 3.

Other Maluma songs that have entered the billion views club include “Sin Contrato,” “Corazón,” “El Perdedor” and “Felices Los 4.”

News of his seventh entry in the billion views club comes as the “Hawái” singer has sparked confusion among his fans after feuding on Twitter with reality TV personality Scott Disick, who appears in Maluma’s new music video for his latest single “Sobrio.”

Maluma Teams Up with Quay for Full Collection of Sunglasses & Glasses

The future’s so bright for Maluma that he’s gotta wear shades…

The 27-year-old Colombian singer and songwriter is expanding his empire with a special collaboration with Quay.

Maluma x Quay

Maluma has teamed up with the eyewear brand for a full collection of sunglasses and optical lenses, designed to bring he good vibes and energy this summer.

The Maluma So Much Sol campaign features a variety of styles and colors for everyone.

Maluma x Quay

“I always liked Quay,” the singer, born Juan Luis Londoño Arias, tells Billboard of the new collaboration. “I saw a couple of years ago when Jennifer Lopez was part of a big campaign with Quay and when I saw it, I wanted to be there. I always wear Quay. So one day, some guy from the office called me and said he wanted to work with me, so I was like, ‘What?’ That was a big, big dream for me and now it’s happening so I’m excited to release this big campaign. There’s going to be, hopefully, around the world, fans who are excited too. They know that I love shades, I love sunglasses.”

The summery theme of the campaign, of course, was inspired partly by his 2020 album, Papi Juancho, which peaked at No. 34 on the Billboard 200 albums chart on November 20, 2020.

Maluma x Quay

“[The album] had those tropical colors, that Miami Vice vibe, so I wanted to match it with the campaign,” Maluma explains. “That’s how I was feeling at the time when we started working on it. It matched perfectly. We did the photoshoot in Miami and it looked very vintage and modern at the same time.”

While it’s “hard to choose” a favorite pair, the global superstar gushes over the multi-colored Yada Yada pair. “They look like a rainbow and they’re big and are a statement,” he says. “Those are the kind of shades I love, because I’m not afraid to wear different kinds of things. When I saw those shades, I knew they were my favorite.”

Maluma is also ready to rock his new Quay collaboration at his Papi Juancho 2021 World Tour, which kicks off in the U.S. on September 2 at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, California.

“Finally, finally, finally, we’re going on tour,” the singer says, bursting at the seams with excitement. “I miss it so bad. The last time I was one stage was a year and a half ago, and it feels like an eternity.”

“We’re preparing new music, because the last year was one of the most important years of my career,” he continues. “I released Papi Juancho, ‘Hawái’ was the biggest song of my career, so now we’re preparing for the musicians and the band and the team. We’re going to make a show that’s another level. That’s the goal – we’re talking about fashion, dancers, lights, music. We’re very excited about it.”

Ana Gabriel Bringing “Por Amor a Ustedes” Tour to 18 U.S. Cities in Early 2022

Ana Gabriel is preparing to head north of the border…

After her scheduled world tour was sidelined by the coronavirus pandemic a year ago, the 65-year-old Mexican legendary singer/songwriter is now announcing new live dates.

Ana Gabriel,

Her “Por Amor a Ustedes” tour, originally slated to kick off in Spring of 2020, will now launch February 10, 2022 at the Oakland Arena in Oakland, California.

Ana Gabriel will play 18 U.S. cities. Tickets originally purchased for her 2020 postponed dates will be honored on the new dates.

A legacy artist known as much for her throaty voice as for her songwriting, Ana Gabriel is one of the few Latin female acts playing to large venues today.

Based on her chart success, she sits at No. 25 on Billboard’s list of Top Latin Artists of All Time, one of only four female artists on the list’s top 25.

Her tour is produced by concert promoter Cardenas Marketing Network (CMN), who are also producing Bad Bunny and Maluma’s tour. Alex Fernández, Alejandro Fernández’s son, will be the guest artist on Ana Gabriel’s Miami and Fort Myers dates.

Tickets will be available for presale May 27 at 10 a.m. and for general sale on May 28 at http://cmnevents.com

Bad Bunny: The Top Latinx Winner at the Billboard Music Awards

Bad Bunny is celebrating a memorable night…

The 27-year-old Puerto Rican superstar took home four awards at Sunday’s Billboard Music Awards, the most of any Latinx artist.

Bad Bunny W Magazine Cover

Bad Bunny collected the awards Top Latin Artist, Top Latin Male Artist, Top Latin Song (“Dákiti“) and Top Latin Album (YHLQMDLG).

Bad Bunny, who performed “Te Deseo Lo Mejor” after accepting his Top Latin Artist award, presented by Lena Waithe, holds the record for the most top 40 hits on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart with 104. He also holds the record for the most hits in total on that chart: 111. His chart-topping YHLQMDLG won him his first Grammy on March 14, when it was named Best Latin Pop or Urban Album.

In the Top Latin Artist category at the BBMAs, Bad Bunny was up against Anuel AA, J Balvin, Maluma and Ozuna.

“I share this [award] with all of my colleagues nominated who are doing big things for the genre,” he said in Spanish during his speech.

El Conejo Malo wasn’t the only one representing Latin music at the BBMAs. Colombian hitmaker Karol G also took center stage performing “Bichota” and “El Makinon” after being announced winner of the Top Latin Female Artist award, beating out Becky G and Rosalía.

Karol G, whose most recent album KG0516 debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart, becoming her first No. 1 on that list, has amassed 25 hits on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart, including three No. 1s. She has had 10 No. 1s on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart.

She performed a medley of her hits “Bichota” and “El Makinon,” both from her latest album KG0516. She also flaunted her “next level” dance moves that she rehearsed “very hard” for, as she told Billboard’s Leila Cobo.

“I’m happy and I’m nervous,” she said ahead of her big night. “A lot of power…with this performance, I want to express that I feel like a woman and a business girl. I feel so happy and grateful for everything that’s happening in my career and my life, and to have the opportunity to inspire girls all over the world.”

Finally, representing the Regional Mexican realm, Eslabon Armado took home the Top Latin Duo/Group award. The teenage trio was up against Banda MS de Sergio Lizárraga and Los Dos Carnales in that category.

Known for their sierreño ballads, Eslabon Armado – comprised of brothers Pedro (lead vocalist) and Brian Tovar (bass and bajoloche), along with friend Gabriel Hidalgo (harmony and background vocals) – scored three consecutive chart-topping albums in 2020: Tu Veneno MortalVibras de Noche and Corta Venas.

“Always grateful to God, our parents, our label and our fans,” Eslabon Armado posted on their social media after they won the award. “This award is for all of you.”

Hosted by Nick Jonas, the ceremony also honored P!nk as the Icon, Drake as the artist of the decade and Trae Tha Truth as the Change Maker.

Maluma Teams Up with Blessd for “Imposible” Remix

Maluma is officially blessd

The 27-year-old Colombian urban global star has joined voiced with Colombian newcomer Blessd for a remix of “Imposible.”

Maluma

With more than 3 million views on YouTube, the original track put Blessd — a rising rapper based in Medellin — on the radar.

“This [song] is the beginning of my career, which will showcase me on a professional level,” he expressed in a statement, adding that with “Imposible,” he’s entering the big leagues.

Evidently, it caught the attention of Maluma, who is not only on the remix, but also gave Blessd his stamp of approval on social media.

“Medellín on the map!” he wrote. “There’s a bunch of promising artists coming from the motherland and I want them to shine. It won’t be like the old days, where ego didn’t let people work together. Business is business and friendship is friendship. I’m vouching for mine.”

Produced by Latin hitmakers The Prodigiez (J Cortes and Young Crunk), “Imposible (Remix)” is a juicy, sensual reggaeton track about two people who are curious about being with each other despite being in another relationship. Maluma’s flirtatious vocals tie in with the infectious melody as Blessd flaunts his refreshing rapping skills.

Unlike the original music video, where Blessd performs the song at a barbershop, Maluma and Blessd are hanging out with the bros and riding around town in luxurious cars.

“We hope that this opportunity will serve to motivate new talents to work hard and realize that great artists, producers, entrepreneurs and important personalities of the industry have their eyes set on Colombia,” The Prodigiez commented.
